Chapter 78: Mikoto Returns
The morning mist still clung to the air as Team 7 trudged back toward Tazuna's house, their clothes damp from the river battle and their bodies sore from the clash with Zabuza Momochi. Every step felt heavier, but there was a shared sense of triumph in their silence. They had stood their ground against the Demon of the Hidden Mist—and survived.
Naruto stretched his arms above his head, his grin wide despite the soreness in his muscles. "Man! Did you see that? We totally kicked that guy's butt!"
"You were flailing around with noodle clones half the time," Sasuke Uchiha muttered, though there was no real venom in his voice. He brushed a hand through his hair, but the slight upward curl of his lips betrayed his satisfaction.
"Hey, those noodle clones distracted him, didn't they?" Naruto shot back.
Sakura Haruno sighed, but there was a warmth in her eyes that hadn't been there before. "We did work well together… Even if it was messy."
Raven Kamizuki walked alongside them, her hands tucked into her pockets. She was smirking, but her eyes held a sharper focus, already calculating her next move.
"That's what teamwork is, ramen boy," Raven said, nudging Naruto with her elbow. "We overwhelm them with carbs and pizza. The ultimate food ninja strategy."
Naruto laughed. "You're right! We're unstoppable!"
Kakashi Hatake, trailing behind the group, observed them with quiet pride. His eye, however, kept drifting to Raven, his mind racing with paranoia.
She's too skilled… She's hiding something. Sayuri… please don't kill me if something happens to your son.
He shuddered internally, imagining Sayuri Arata looming over him with a pizza cutter the size of a scythe.
"Alright," Kakashi finally spoke, interrupting the laughter. "Good work today. But don't get cocky. Zabuza may not be dead."
Naruto blinked. "But that hunter-nin took him, right?"
Kakashi's visible eye narrowed. "It was too… clean. Too fast. That wasn't normal. Stay alert."
Raven's smirk grew wider, though she hid it beneath a stretch.
"Oh, I'm sure we'll see him again," she murmured.
Yuumi's voice echoed telepathically in her mind.
"Oh yeah, that guy's coming back. And he'll either join us, or he's getting turned into pizza sauce."
Raven stifled a laugh.
Later that evening, Tazuna's modest home provided warmth, though the air was still thick with tension. Team 7 ate dinner quietly, fatigue catching up with them.
Naruto shoveled food into his mouth, while Sasuke ate in silence, his thoughts clearly still on the battle. Sakura tried to chat, but it was half-hearted, exhaustion winning out.
Raven, however, excused herself early, citing the need for fresh air.
Kakashi watched her leave, his eye narrowing slightly.
What is she up to?
But he let it go, choosing not to pry—for now.
Under the cover of night, Raven made her way to the edge of the village, where Mikoto Uchiha was already waiting, leaning casually against a tree. Her blue eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight, but there was a warmth in her gaze—the calm confidence of a woman free from the chains of her past.
"You got here fast," Raven said, her tone light but tinged with admiration.
Mikoto smirked, stepping forward. "With the White Empress Technique. You know I'm always exactly where you need me."
Raven raised a brow. "Efficient as ever."
Their eyes met, and for a moment, the world was still. There was an understanding there, a bond that had grown stronger with every step they'd taken together—from oppressed women to revolutionaries.
"So," Mikoto said, crossing her arms. "Zabuza?"
Raven grinned. "Alive. And soon to be ours. Haku's loyal to him. She'll listen if he does."
Mikoto nodded. "And Gato?"
"We'll bleed him dry," Raven's tone darkened, her Rinnegan faintly swirling in the shadows. "His money funds Uzu no Sato now. His bridge? Our gateway to long-term income."
Mikoto's eyes flashed with approval. "Good. We'll need it. The more we grow, the stronger we become."
Raven leaned back against a tree, arms behind her head, though her gaze was sharp.
"How strong are you now?"
Mikoto's expression hardened, but there was pride beneath it. "Stronger every day. My faith in Yuri… in what we're building… it fuels me."
Raven tilted her head, genuine curiosity in her eyes. "And… us?"
Mikoto's cheeks flushed faintly, but her gaze didn't waver. "You know the answer."
Raven's grin softened, turning into something more genuine.
"I like hearing it."
Mikoto stepped closer, their shoulders nearly touching. "The more I love you, the stronger I become. That's my power, Raven. And it has no limit."
Raven's heart skipped, but she covered it with humor.
Yuumi chimed in mentally. "Love fueled by pizza and Yuri. I'm here for it."
Raven bit back a laugh, giving Mikoto's hand a brief squeeze before letting go.
"We'll meet Zabuza soon," Raven said, switching to business. "When we do, I want you there. He'll respect power."
Mikoto nodded, her gaze steely. "He'll fall in line. Or he'll fall."
Raven grinned, pleased. "That's my girl."
The next morning, as the sun began to rise, Kakashi watched Raven from afar, his mind buzzing with suspicion.
She disappeared again… What is she planning?
His eye twitched involuntarily as he imagined Sayuri's reaction to him failing to keep Naruto safe.
What if she finds out I let him fight Zabuza? What if she blames me?
He pictured Sayuri standing in his doorway, holding a pizza peel like a battle axe.
"You let my boy get hurt?" she'd say.
He shivered.
No… I can't let that happen.
But his unease grew. Raven was more than she appeared, and he knew it.
And that terrified him.
Later that day, Raven stood with Yuumi on the outskirts of the village, waiting for their next move.
Yuumi's voice brushed against her mind. "You really think this is gonna work?"
Raven's eyes glimmered with confidence. Of course. Zabuza's strong, but Gato's money can only hold him for so long. He'll see what we're building. And he'll want in.
Yuumi snorted mentally. "And if he doesn't?"
Raven's grin turned sharp. Then I'll drown him in mozzarella and call it a day.
The mist drifted in from the river, hiding their smirks from the world.
The revolution was spreading.
And nothing could stop it now.
