Chapter 52: Chapter 052: The Two Teiko First-Years Blew Right Through Dainita Junior High
"Stop overthinking it! Show them what we're really made of!"
The third-year captain of Dainita Junior High, Minamiya Hiroyuki, roared to rally his team.
"That's right!" The rest of the players nodded in unison.
"We're not going to lose to a bunch of rookies who've only been playing junior high basketball for a few months!"
On the sidelines, Dainita's bench players were plotting how to take advantage of Teiko's two first-year starters.
Meanwhile, Shigure Akihito was calmly swapping out his shoes, already mentally framing the opposing team as nothing more than a training quest, waiting for the system to reward him with that satisfying ding.
And yet…
Nothing.
He turned to glance at Dainita. Their players were clearly fired up, itching to prove something.
Shigure Akihito: "…"
Seriously?
That average?
Over the past few weeks, he'd figured out the general mechanics of how the system issued tasks.
Broad missions, like "First Championship" or "Teiko Starter", got posted well in advance. Game-day tasks usually popped up based on the opponent's status.
And that "status" could mean anything: the overall strength of the opposing team, the threat posed by a specific player, or even a spontaneous event like provocation from a rival.
But today, first match of the Nationals prelims, nothing.
No mission, no challenge. Which meant only one thing: the opponent posed no real threat. No standout skills, no special edge.
The only reward he'd get from today would be the most basic kind, the default system settlement for victory.
Compared to missions with special conditions, the reward would be laughably meager.
…
Soon enough, both teams took to the court for warm-ups.
From Dainita's side, several players snuck glances at the two first-year starters on Teiko.
Number 7, Shigure, was dribbling casually along the sideline, sneaking occasional glances at their direction. His expression was… weird. Like a teacher watching students fail a test.
On the other side,
Number 8, Nijimura Shuzo.
He was even weirder. While everyone else was going through the usual drills, layups, jumpers, passing, Shigure was at least moving with a ball.
But this guy?
He just stood there, staring at them with an unnerving expression, like a biologist observing some rare species in the wild.
And judging by the intensity in his eyes, maybe he was even thinking about dissecting them.
The entire Dainita squad: "…"
Clap! Clap!
"Focus up!" Minamiya Hiroyuki stepped in at just the right time, pulling his teammates back to reality. "Doesn't matter who we're facing, stick to our rhythm. Don't get distracted by their tricks. Just remember, they're first-years. That's all you need to know!"
"Yes, sir!"
"Let's do this! Take them down!"
After the warm-ups, both teams sent out their starting five.
For Teiko:
#4 Center: Ōkura Masaaki
#5 Point Guard: Ebana Masatoshi
#6 Small Forward: Uchiumi Masahiko
#7 Shooting Guard: Shigure Akihito
#8 Power Forward: Nijimura Shuzo
Seeing this lineup match their intel exactly, the Dainita players breathed a collective sigh of relief.
The whistle blew.
Jump ball!
Ōkura's timing and vertical were perfect. He won the tip with ease.
And from that very first possession…
The storm began to gather over Dainita.
On the court,
Nijimura received a pass from Ebana.
Then, for some baffling reason, Dainita sent two players rushing to trap him at the perimeter. He'd only just gotten the ball as a part of the offensive flow, and already they were pressing with a double-team.
Nijimura: "?"
Boom!
He reacted instantly.
Before the trap could fully form, he saw the gap and exploded through it like a sledgehammer smashing through a paper wall.
One thundering step, and he split the defenders clean. The two Dainita players stumbled backward, stunned.
What the hell…?
That power just now,
Sure, Nijimura was strong. Otherwise, the coaching staff wouldn't trust a 175cm player to start at power forward.
But the real killer?
His control of that power.
This was Nijimura's real edge, his sharp observation, lightning-quick read-and-react instincts, and veteran-level poise.
It was terrifying how composed he was.
He burst forward like a cannon, his dark hair trailing as he slashed into the lane. Minamiya Hiroyuki quickly rotated over, tensing every muscle as he planted in Nijimura's path.
Crossover!
Fake hip rotation!
Front-step scissors!
Behind-the-back pull!
A flurry of moves that left Minamiya's scalp tingling!
And then it hit him,
Wait, isn't this guy supposed to be… a power forward?!
Somehow, he managed to recover and stay in front of Nijimura. Just when he thought he'd steadied himself, Nijimura stopped on a dime and pulled the ball back.
Minamiya's eyes widened.
He was completely off balance.
Shit!
Get back! Move!
Skrrt!
Minamiya wasn't Dainita's captain for nothing. His body was reeling, but he forced a plant off one foot and lunged to block again.
Except,
"?!"
Where'd the ball go?
When did he pass it? Who did he pass it to?
While Minamiya stood frozen, scanning for the ball,
BOOM!
A thunderous stomp echoed behind Nijimura.
That was Teiko's signature sound, Shigure Akihito's "Monkey Step" bursting into motion.
It was a signature move, usually followed by a terrifying slam.
BOOM!
Shigure landed behind Nijimura, foot hitting the ground like a war drum.
Then,
He ignited, rocketing upward!
The audience gasped, their eyes wide with disbelief.
Number 7 of Teiko charged into the paint with the ball gripped in both hands. With the defensive formation shredded by Nijimura's penetration, there was nothing left to stop him.
KRACK!
Only one lone center remained beneath the hoop. He looked up, eyes full of fear, as Shigure rose above him, completely outmatched in height and momentum.
The slam came down like thunder.
And just like that,
Those two first-years from Teiko, the ones Dainita had sworn to "target before they take control"...
On the very first play,
Tore Dainita Junior High apart.
Their poor center crumpled silently to the floor behind the rim, legs buckling beneath him, a dazed expression frozen on his face.
