Konoha's Status Bar Ninja

Chapter 65: Chapter 65: The Right Way to Develop Poison Resistance, One Step Further!

I was so stupid. Truly!

There was such a simple method right in front of me, and I didn't think of it at all.

Hajime was filled with regret.

He had been overthinking things too much before.

Of course…

There was still one more doubt lingering in his mind.

Namely, if he was already in the status of "Immune to All Poisons," would taking a deadly poison still allow him to develop resistance?

So, Hajime asked a rather strange question:

"Tsunade, if I can completely ignore a certain deadly poison, can I still continue to build resistance to it?"

Tsunade couldn't help but roll her eyes when she heard that.

"You're already immune—if that poison has no effect on your body, it means your body can absorb or metabolize it."

"Antibodies are typically formed when the poison coexists with your body, becoming part of you."

"That's why people who develop resistance to a certain poison can often use that poison themselves—especially ninja."

"Take Hanzo, for example. It's said that even his breath is poisonous, which is why he always wears a respirator."

Hajime fell into deep thought.

He began pondering the true nature of his status bar.

Was his body really immune to all poisons now?

Was it as Tsunade described—able to perfectly absorb or neutralize all toxins?

Hajime hadn't reflected on such questions before.

Now, he couldn't help but examine them.

He hadn't paid much attention during the battle against the Sand Ninja. Looking back now, he still couldn't be sure.

So he started analyzing based on other statuses he'd experienced.

Like "Indecisive" Status.

Back then, it wasn't like he literally grew two extra hearts in his chest.

Nor did he really gain a second, physically existing soul.

It had been an illusion—something granted by the status bar.

Only when Kakuzu extracted his heart did that phantom heart become real.

And then there was "Steel Body."

His flesh didn't actually turn into steel. Though it felt hard as iron, it still had the texture of skin and flesh.

Tsunade, seeing Hajime dazed and lost in thought, waved a hand in front of his face with a puzzled look.

"Hey!"

Hajime snapped out of it, suddenly jumped up, and grinned.

"Thank you, Tsunade!"

Before she could respond, he vanished.

Tsunade froze in place, then clenched her teeth.

"That bastard, just comes and goes as he pleases…"

"TSUNADE!"

Suddenly, Hajime reappeared behind her.

Tsunade jumped in fright and turned around in a panic.

"Wh-what is it now?"

Hajime smiled and said,

"Tsunade, I want you to prepare some poisons for me."

"As many different kinds as possible—the deadlier, the better!"

Tsunade's attention was instantly grabbed. She frowned.

"What are you planning?"

"Don't tell me you're thinking of taking poison to build up immunity?"

"This isn't a 'more is better' kind of thing. Antidotes require careful formulation."

Hajime replied, "No need. Just have the antidotes fully prepared."

"But Tsunade, how long does it take the human body to adapt to a specific toxin?"

Tsunade shook her head.

"It depends on the poison."

"Some toxins the body can adapt to in a day or two. Others might take ten days. Some, even after months, the body still can't adapt."

Hajime frowned slightly.

He didn't have much time left.

Less than four days in total.

If the time ran out and he hadn't solidified his [Immune to All Poisons] status, and on top of that had a massive buildup of toxins in his body… that would be a horrible way to die.

Back when he obtained Wood Release, if he hadn't fused with Hashirama's cells while in the Immortality status, the result would've been equally disastrous.

This… was risky.

After a moment of thought, Hajime asked,

"Then can you prepare as many poisons as possible that the body can adapt to within three days?"

"Ideally… a hundred kinds!"

Tsunade immediately looked at him like he was insane.

A hundred kinds of poison…

It wasn't that she couldn't do it.

But still—

"Do you not realize some poisons react with others, and can become even more lethal when combined?!"

Tsunade shouted in anger.

Hajime chuckled.

"Relax. I know what I'm doing."

"Besides, you do know I have Wood Release, right?"

Tsunade went silent for a moment, then snorted.

"Fine. Pay up. One million ryo!"

"And if you die, don't come blaming me!"

Hajime burst out laughing.

"I'm not that easy to kill."

"Oh right—include a variety of poisons. They don't all have to be lethal."

"Anesthetics, neurotoxins, whatever works."

Tsunade waved him off, clearly impatient.

"I got it. Now get lost!"

"Okay Okay!"

"I'll pick them up tomorrow!"

And just like that, Hajime vanished once more.

Tsunade's rage flared up again.

"That bastard! And not even a deposit for a full night's work?!"

After leaving Tsunade's house, Hajime immediately went to Konoha Hospital and picked out a few commonly used poisons.

Of course, in the hospital setting, these were classified as anesthetics and hallucinogens.

Back at the Root base, Hajime collected over twenty different types of poisons from their stockpile.

These also included anesthetics and hallucinogens typically used for interrogations.

But more importantly, there were both lethal and non-lethal poisons.

Back at his residence—

Hajime began by taking the anesthetics and hallucinogens.

He felt nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Next, he tried the non-lethal poisons.

Still no reaction.

After thinking it over, Hajime left the Root base and headed back to Konoha Hospital.

He needed to make use of the hospital's medical equipment to monitor and analyze his physical condition.

But since he didn't want to reveal himself, he secretly used his Dreamwalker Technique to hypnotize a resting medical-nin to assist him.

Fortunately, there weren't many people at the hospital at night.

Inside the laboratory, the only sounds were the steady hums of the operating equipment.

Every so often, Hajime would draw a vial of blood for testing—along with urine samples, and even cellular analysis—to monitor various indicators of his body's condition.

So Hajime waited leisurely, occasionally ingesting another poison.

Meanwhile, the hypnotized medical-nin was working non-stop.

Running tests, generating reports, and even explaining the results to Hajime, who wasn't exactly a qualified medical ninja.

And the results?

On the surface, these poisons seemed to have no effect on Hajime.

But in reality, they were entering and circulating through his body.

In other words, the [Immune to All Poisons] status didn't simply erase poisons from existence upon entry.

Instead, it gave his body the trait of poison resistance.

However, just like "Indecisive" and "Steel Body," his flesh didn't actually possess true poison resistance in the physical sense.

As a result—

The test results were bizarre.

Clearly, his body had been poisoned, and yet… there were no symptoms of poisoning.

It was an incredibly strange phenomenon.

Still, Hajime soon stopped worrying about that. What made him happy was that, over time, his body was gradually developing tolerance to the poisons.

In other words, resistance.

Even though the current detectable effects were limited to anesthetics—

It still meant one thing:

Taking poison was indeed effective.

Especially with the [Immune to All Poisons] status in effect, his body demonstrated an extraordinary tolerance to toxins.

No—he could ignore them entirely.

Which meant that poisons adapted to his body incredibly quickly.

Or rather, his body adapted to the poisons incredibly quickly.

"You—what are you doing here?"

Just as Hajime was reading the reports, a voice suddenly snapped him out of his focus.

He looked up to see Tsunade standing in the doorway.

A bit awkward.

But Hajime, with his thick skin, calmly tucked the reports away and smiled.

"Just came by to monitor my condition."

Tsunade walked in, glanced at the busy medical-nin, and asked,

"You've already started taking poison?"

Hajime nodded.

"Started with anesthetics and hallucinogens. Seems to be working pretty well."

Tsunade approached and looked at the male medical-nin, who was still diligently working, her brow furrowing slightly.

Something wasn't right.

"What did you do to him?"

She turned and stared at Hajime.

Without flinching, Hajime answered honestly,

"A genjutsu I developed myself—deep hypnosis. Right now, he's in a state like sleepwalking, except under my control."

Tsunade raised an eyebrow.

"Sleepwalking?"

Hajime nodded.

"This jutsu was actually partially inspired by you."

Tsunade gave a short snort.

"So that day, I wasn't mistaken—you were eavesdropping outside?"

Hajime shrugged.

"I wouldn't call it eavesdropping. I was there openly."

"I just happened to be passing by while looking for Nonō that day."

"And your conversation gave me some inspiration."

"I did it this way because I need to keep my data confidential."

Tsunade's brow was still furrowed, about to say something—when Hajime added,

"Don't worry. This technique won't harm him."

"When it's released, he won't remember anything that happened during this process. Just like sleepwalking."

Tsunade's expression eased, though she remained poker-faced.

"You're way too cautious around your own comrades."

Hajime smiled.

"If it's you, Tsunade, of course I wouldn't need to go that far."

Tsunade huffed coldly.

"Fine. I'll overlook it this time, for the sake of that million ryo."

"Now hand over your report."

Hajime raised his hand and passed it to her.

Tsunade took it and quickly skimmed through the contents.

After a few moments, she looked up at Hajime, gave him a long glance, then continued reading the report.

But it didn't take long before she couldn't help glancing up at Hajime again.

Her eyes couldn't hide the shock.

'This guy... Could it really be the result of the First Hokage's cells causing such an extreme condition?'

Taking a silent breath to calm herself, Tsunade looked up and said,

"So when you said you were planning to ingest a hundred kinds of poison in a short time, you weren't joking or being reckless. What you were relying on... was your special physique."

A perfect excuse!

Hajime praised himself inwardly and nodded.

"More or less."

"It's just that I don't know where my limit is, so I have to be cautious."

He was also worried that the [Immune to All Poisons] status might suddenly disappear without becoming permanent—leading to him poisoning himself to death.

That would truly be the most pitiful fate for any transmigrator.

After a moment of silent deliberation, Tsunade said,

"I'll take responsibility for managing the dosage of the poisons, as well as the timing and amount of the antidotes."

"But even so, trying to take that many poisons in the shortest time possible is still unrealistic."

"I think you should extend your timeline."

Hajime shook his head.

"In the Land of Sky, the Sky Ninja once used a deadly poison to neutralize my shadow clone. That piece of intel puts me at a disadvantage."

"Right now, only Sunagakure has placed a bounty on me, but Iwagakure, Kirigakure, and Kumogakure all wouldn't want a Wood Release user alive."

This reasoning convinced Tsunade. She frowned and nodded.

"I'll do my best, but I'll need more help."

"Release him," she said, referring to the hypnotized medic, "and I'll summon more personnel to assist."

"Don't worry. Your identity won't be leaked. They'll only be handling the poison and antidote preparations."

Hajime immediately smiled.

"Then I'll be relying on you."

"I'll put up a million ryo as compensation for this experiment. You can distribute it to the other medical-nin involved."

Tsunade's previously tight expression softened slightly.

"Alright."

And then it was Tsunade's time to shine.

Before long, numerous medical-nin and regular hospital staff—who had already finished their shifts—were summoned back by her.

The once-quiet Konoha Hospital suddenly became lively and bustling.

At this point, Hajime seemed more like Tsunade's personal test subject, moving however she instructed—any posture, any position.

Yet the efficiency was astonishing.

In just one night, Hajime completed trials with 32 different poisons.

The reason for such speed was the use of cell activation and several of Tsunade's advanced medical techniques, which accelerated Hajime's own metabolic rate.

...

Though Tsunade didn't interfere with the hospital's regular operations, the commotion certainly wasn't small.

So, by the time morning came and regular shifts resumed, the matter had already reached Hiruzen Sarutobi's ears.

However, after sending Anbu to investigate, Hiruzen no longer paid it much attention—assuming Tsunade was simply experimenting with some potent new poisons.

After all, the Anbu hadn't discovered Hajime's presence.

Three days passed in the blink of an eye.

Inside the lab—

Tsunade, looking a bit tired, stretched her body and spoke to Hajime, who was lying down,

"There's no issue now."

"The residual toxins in your body have all been purged. What remains are only trace amounts of a hundred different poisons, which have now become part of your body—part of your resistance."

"They've coexisted with your body, integrated into your internal circulation."

"Of course, your body doesn't have a poison sac like Hanzo the Salamander, so you won't affect others unless you deliberately enhance the toxin levels using chakra."

After all, discussing toxicity without considering dosage is just nonsense.

Hajime felt deeply reassured.

Even if the [Immune to All Poisons] status wasn't solidified, this was still a huge win.

"Thank you, Tsunade."

As he spoke, Hajime took out two million ryo.

One million was for Tsunade personally, the other million to be distributed among the many medical-nin who had helped.

"I'll be going now."

Taking the money, Tsunade turned and left.

She wasn't made of steel. After several days of hard work, she was completely exhausted.

But just as she stepped out of Konoha Hospital, she paused in her tracks—realizing she had once again forgotten to give Hajime the scroll.

"Whatever. I'll give it to him next time. Sage Art training is dangerous anyway."

Shaking her head with a sigh, Tsunade walked home.

...

On the other side—

Hajime also left the hospital and headed straight to a riverbank.

Once he confirmed no one was around, he unsealed a scroll and took out a large amount of data.

These were all his physical condition reports, which he had brought out from the hospital.

He set them aflame, watched them burn, and scattered the ashes into the river—completely erasing any trace.

After putting away the scroll, Hajime was about to return to Root when a wave of memory from one of his clones surged into his mind.

"Finally, one step closer."

Hajime smiled.

His Wind Step technique had finally made progress again.

"Then let's test it out!"

Absorbing the memory, Hajime leapt into the air.

Just as he was about to fall, a surge of wind burst from under his feet. His whole body floated as if walking on air, gaining lift from nowhere—and rose once again, higher than before.
