Chapter 13: Chapter 13 - Renvar, The Greatest Sidekick!
The morning sun streamed through the windows of the Healer's Association, bathing the room in a soft, golden light. Kaelthar sat at the edge of the bed in his assigned chamber, his gaze distant as he absentmindedly ran a hand over the faint scars on his arms.
The events of the past days weighed heavily on his mind—his father's near-death, the relentless battles, and the enormous responsibility placed upon him as Valthyssar's hope. He exhaled deeply, the silence of the room offering little solace.
A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts. Before he could answer, the door swung open with dramatic flair, and in strolled Renvar, balancing a tray piled high with food.
"Breakfast is served!" Renvar announced, his voice booming with exaggerated cheer. He balanced the tray on one hand, wobbling it theatrically as though he might drop it. "A feast fit for a demon-slayer and his… moderately competent sidekick!"
Kaelthar raised an eyebrow, suppressing a smirk. "Moderately competent? Don't let Myrael hear you underselling yourself. She might actually agree."
"Bah! Myrael's standards are way too high," Renvar replied, setting the tray down with a flourish. He threw himself onto the nearest chair, lounging dramatically as though he'd just conquered a mountain. "Besides, it's not my fault I'm the only one here who brings personality to the table."
Kaelthar shook his head, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I don't think personality counts when you're dodging claws and fangs."
Renvar waved his hand dismissively. "Dodging is a skill, my dear friend. I've mastered the art of graceful retreats. Some might call it running, but I prefer to think of it as 'strategic repositioning.'"
"Strategic, huh?" Kaelthar leaned forward, picking up a piece of bread from the tray. "I seem to remember you tripping over a root and falling into a mud pit during one of those 'repositions.'"
Renvar's expression turned serious, his hand pressed to his heart as though mortally wounded. "That, Kaelthar, was a tactical decoy maneuver. I sacrificed my dignity to lure the enemy into a false sense of security."
Kaelthar snorted. "Is that what you're calling it now?"
"Absolutely." Renvar grinned, leaning back in his chair. "But enough about my heroics. Let's talk about you. You look like someone just told you there's no more coffee in the world. What's eating at you?"
Kaelthar hesitated, his gaze dropping to the tray. "It's just… everything. My father's recovery, the battles we've fought, the ones ahead of us. Sometimes it feels like the weight of Valthyssar is on my shoulders."
Renvar tapped his chin thoughtfully, his usual playful demeanor giving way to a rare moment of sincerity. "You're carrying a lot, no doubt about it. But you're not alone, Kaelthar. You've got me, Myrael, Selene, your parents—hell, even Yrden, scary as she is. You've got a whole squad of people ready to back you up."
Kaelthar nodded slowly. "I know. It's just hard to remind myself sometimes."
Renvar clapped his hands, breaking the somber mood. "Well, that's what I'm here for! To remind you that you're doing great and to occasionally steal all the credit for your victories."
Kaelthar laughed softly. "Thanks, Renvar."
"Don't mention it. Now," Renvar said, standing up with sudden energy, "I have a foolproof plan to cheer you up. Prepare yourself for the greatest distraction of your life."
Kaelthar raised an eyebrow. "I'm almost afraid to ask."
Renvar grinned, his eyes sparkling mischievously. "Oh, you should be. Brace yourself."
---
For the next hour, Renvar subjected Kaelthar to a whirlwind of ridiculous antics. He started with a dramatic retelling of one of his many misadventures, complete with exaggerated gestures and sound effects.
"And then," Renvar said, crouching low as if to sneak, "I realized I wasn't sneaking into the nobleman's garden. I was sneaking into his wife's hat room! Do you know how many hats one woman can own? Enough to start a small nation!"
Kaelthar chuckled, shaking his head. "Please tell me you didn't touch anything."
Renvar gasped, feigning offense. "Touch? Kaelthar, I'd never! Well… except for that one hat shaped like a griffin. I just had to try it on. I mean, wouldn't you?"
Kaelthar groaned, covering his face. "You're unbelievable."
"Thank you," Renvar said with a flourish. "I try."
As the stories continued, Myrael appeared in the doorway, arms crossed but a faint smile on her lips. "What in Valthyssar's name is going on here?"
"Ah, Myrael!" Renvar exclaimed, spinning dramatically to face her. "Just in time for my grand finale. Watch closely, for you'll never see such grace again."
He attempted a backflip, only to land flat on his back with a loud thud.
Kaelthar burst out laughing, while Myrael rolled her eyes, though her smile widened. "You're an idiot."
"An idiot with flair," Renvar said, wincing as he stood. "You're welcome."

An Evening of Laughter and Warmth
By evening, the laughter had spread to everyone. Even Kaelthar's parents, who had been skeptical of Renvar's antics at first, were eventually drawn in by his infectious energy.
Eryndor, Kaelthar's father, chuckled as Renvar recounted another wild tale. "Renvar, I don't know whether to thank you for cheering up my son or be concerned that he might start picking up your habits."
"Why not both?" Renvar replied, grinning. "I like to think of myself as a positive influence."
Myrael snorted, her arms crossed. "Positive is… debatable."
"Debatable, perhaps, but undeniable," Renvar shot back, winking.
Kaelthar watched the exchange, a genuine smile lighting up his face. For the first time in days, the weight on his shoulders felt a little lighter.
As the night wore on, the group shared stories and jokes, the room filled with warmth and camaraderie. Kaelthar allowed himself to relax, savoring the rare moment of peace.

The Dawn of a Renewed Resolve
That night, as Kaelthar lay in bed staring up at the ceiling, he felt a renewed sense of hope. The road ahead would still be challenging, but he wasn't facing it alone. He had his family, his friends, and—much to his surprise—the relentless humor of Renvar.
One thing was certain: with Renvar by his side, life was never going to be boring.
