Ch. 18
“Whoa…”
“This can’t be…”
Ignoring their astonishment and shock, I looked ahead.
The sun, now setting, filled the ruins where we stood. Bathed in its light, I began to stride forward.
The protective barrier that shielded us vanished just in time, and I made eye contact with the servants clearing the debris from a different direction.
“We’ve found the missing Lady and Lords!”
“How did they manage to come out on their own from there?!”
“Call the physician immediately!”
The bustling servants, especially those from various families, rushed towards the three of us.
The most excited among them were our parents.
“Motsin! Are you alright?”
“Zion, my son!”
Duke Fredo and Duchess Agla hurriedly embraced their children. Duchess Agla was crying her heart out.
Behind them, my father approached with a stern expression.
“Are you hurt?”
“No, Father. We were protected by the barrier.”
“Good, that’s all that matters.”
That was the end of my conversation with Father.
I glanced to the side. Mostin and Zion were resting in their parents’ arms.
For a moment, I felt a surge of jealousy and longing, but I skillfully suppressed it. Ever since Meldor was born, I had gotten used to suppressing such emotions.
As I managed my nearly distorted expression, Father spoke.
“Before things get chaotic, let’s return to the mansion. Let the mansion’s physician check your condition.”
“Yes.”
As I started to follow Father, a clear voice called out to me.
“Belladi.”
I turned to see Zion, who had somehow freed himself from Duchess Agla’s embrace, looking at me.
“Once again, thank you. Thanks to you, we got out safely.”
“I just did what I had to do.”
“… and you were really cool.”
Zion’s face was quite red from the setting sun. Mostin, who was standing next to him, also chimed in.
“Yeah! You were amazing!”
Mostin grinned and suddenly extended his hand towards me.
“Let’s be friends from now on!”
“You want to be friends with me?”
“Yeah!”
I glanced at Father. He looked at them for a moment before slowly nodding.
I immediately grasped Mostin’s hand.
“I might not be the most fun friend.”
Mostin smiled brightly.
“Zion’s the fun one, so I wanted a cool friend!”
Zion added from the side.
“Great, now that we’re friends, we should meet every day! What do you think, Belladi?”
“Hmm, I’ll think about it.”
Mostin and Zion laughed at my response. I, too, felt excited about having friends for the first time.
The jealousy I had suppressed vanished instantly, and a smile crept onto my face.
***
Under the setting sun, the bond between us three friends continued to grow strong.
“They were really cute back then.”
I chuckled, reminiscing about young Mostin and Zion.
At that time, they were both shorter than me…
‘They’re about my height now, though.’
This was because I inherited my father’s height, towering over other girls my age.
Anyway, Mostin and Zion were my cherished friends in this world.
‘It’s a strange fate. Originally, they were just names mentioned in the original story.’
In fact, Mostin was supposed to die in this
Zion was depicted as barely surviving with his magic, losing a leg in the process.
Meeting me changed their fate, leaving them unscathed, altering the original story.
‘It was all thanks to the barrier from Dia and Mother.’
The moment I was enveloped by the barrier was when I felt my mother’s love the most…
Incidentally, as soon as we reached the mansion, the diamond necklace was given to Meldor. It was because the family heir needed to be more thoroughly protected.
The person who led that decision was…
‘Mother…!’
Thinking about it made me feel worse.
According to the original story, Mother was severely discriminated against for being a daughter, growing up in a poor peasant family.
So, how could she treat me like that?
‘… ha, there’s no point thinking about this now.’
My mother and the rest of my maternal family were no longer in this world. Blaming the dead wouldn’t change anything.
Just then, the carriage arrived at Duke Fredo’s residence. I dusted off my coat and stepped outside, trying to clear my mind.
Suddenly, a hand reached out in front of me.
“Welcome, Lady.”
Mostin, with his bright blonde hair and brown eyes, was grinning.
I took his hand out of habit and walked into the mansion.
“Where’s Zion?”
I asked, and Mostin smiled.
“He’s already here, waiting.”
“You seem to be in a good mood today?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Mostin asked back, then started humming a tune while walking.
“Today, I finally get to spar with you~!”
His playful movements made my arm, which he was holding, shake. I smiled and matched his pace.
“Are you that excited?”
“Of course! I’ve been waiting ever since you said you’d learn swordsmanship!”
Mostin was right.
I made Zeppelin and Rover my people and then immediately confessed the truth to them.
“I decided to learn the sword in secret.”
Their reactions were as follows.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Not lying?”
“Of course not.”
“Whoa! Zion!”
“Mostin!”
They hugged each other tightly as if they had just won a gold medal.
“Great! We’ve finally accomplished our mission!”
“Exactly! We almost lost the genius of the century!”
It seemed that the two felt a sense of responsibility for persuading me. So, when I said I would learn the sword, they were even happier.
The two, who were hugging each other in joy, now held my hands and danced in a circle. I matched their rhythm naturally, and then Mostin stopped and looked at me.
“Then let’s spar.”
“Spar?”
“Yes! I’ve always wanted to spar with you at least once!”
Those sparkling eyes of Mostin…
‘If he had a tail, it would’ve been wagging like a propeller.’
Anyway, there was no reason to refuse Mostin’s proposal.
So, I said.
“I’ve just started learning swordsmanship, so wait a bit. When the time comes, I’ll challenge you first.”
Mostin kindly kept his promise.
Now, half a year later, I finally challenged Mostin.
‘Mostin started learning the sword at the age of eight, right?’
Let’s see how good Mostin was. Of course, I had no intention of losing.
Whether he knew my thoughts or not, Mostin excitedly led me to the training room.
Besides Zion, the training room was empty. Since my learning the sword was still a secret, Mostin must have cleared everyone out.
“Belladi!”
Zion put down the book he was reading and ran over.
“Hello, Zion.”
“Are you really going to spar with Mostin today? I’m a bit worried.”
Zion looked at me and Mostin alternately with a slightly anxious face.
“No matter how much of a genius Belladi is, sparring with Mostin who has been learning the sword for 8 years…”
“Such naive Zion!”
Mostin put his arm around Zion’s neck and shook his head.
“Don’t you know Belladi yet? She’s already calculated everything and challenged me to win.”
“That’s true, but…”
“You both know me too well.”
I said that and took off the coat I was wearing. Then the training uniform hidden under the long winter coat was revealed.
“So, Mostin, you’re sparring with me even though you know you’ll lose?”
“I don’t care if I win or lose as long as I enjoy it~!”
Since Mostin was already in his training clothes, there was no need for any troublesome preparation.
I laughed as I picked up a wooden sword prepared in one corner of the training room.
“Really? I only enjoy it when I win.”
The wooden sword had an iron core to match the weight of a real sword. Swinging it lightly with one hand, I turned my head.
“Come on, Mostin Fredo.”
At my words, Mostin also smiled broadly.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment, Belladi Alton.”
Seeing us like this, the wizard Zion shook his head.
“Haa, I can’t keep up with the minds of these physical types.”
***
For the sake of Mostin’s honor, I would omit the detailed explanation. Just remember this one thing.
Mostin Fredo was utterly defeated by Belladi Alton.
“Huff, huff, huff.”
Lying sprawled on the floor of the training room, Mostin was breathing heavily and reached out his arm with difficulty.
“Wa-water…”
Then Zion, who was waiting, quickly ran over.
“Here. Mostin!”
“I feel alive…”
“Towel.”
At my words, Zion ran over to me this time and handed me the towel hanging around his neck.
“Here. Belladi!”
Since there were no servants in the training room, Zion was busy running around taking care of us.
“Thanks.”
I leisurely wiped off my flowing sweat while standing.
Mostin looked at me in admiration.
“Whoa, Belladi Alton. Aren’t you… too strong?”
“You weren’t bad either.”
“No, the technique is supposed to make up for the difference in strength. But you’re so strong that my technique didn’t work. How does that make sense?”
At Mostin’s lament, Zion nodded.
“It doesn’t make sense.”
“To be called a genius, you have to do things that don’t make sense.”
I laughed, saying what I had told Zeppelin. Sparring with someone other than Zeppelin for the first time was enjoyable.
‘It was so much fun that I almost beat Mostin in one strike.’
I wondered if Mostin knew that I had controlled my strength to prolong the match.
“Belladi, towel.”
At those words, I sat down next to the slumped Mostin and put the towel on his face.
Mostin rubbed the towel on his face, wiping off the sweat. Zion carefully laid his own handkerchief on the floor of the training ground. Then, half sitting on it, he muttered.
