Chapter 195: Chapter 194: Ruchir's Group Turn-1
Ruchir and his group stepped cautiously into the next chamber, their hearts still pounding from the intense maze trial they had just escaped.
The air was different here—thick with an ominous energy. The chamber stretched wide and high, with walls lined by a hundred golden bells of varying sizes.
Some were large and imposing, hanging from thick ropes, while others were small, almost delicate, barely noticeable among the others.
As they stood in the middle of the room, the silence was deafening. Not a single sound echoed in this vast chamber. But there was a strange, heavy tension, as if the room itself was waiting for something.
Huojin was the first to break the silence. "Hundred Bells Trial," he said, his voice low and cautious. "I've heard about this. No one's made it past in decades."
Mei glanced around, her eyes flicking from bell to bell. "So what's the catch? Do we just ring a bell and hope for the best, or are these things going to kill us if we touch them?"
Zhen, ever the skeptic, muttered under his breath, "It's never that simple, is it?"
Ruchir's eyes narrowed as he studied the room, his mind working to piece together the nature of the trial. "It's more than just ringing the bells," he said slowly.
"Look at them. Each bell is different. Different sizes, different tones. This trial must be about harmony—finding the right sequence."
"But how do we know which bells to ring?" Li asked, his voice quiet but tinged with worry. "If we choose wrong, this place will probably react."
"Exactly," Ruchir said, nodding. "The wrong combination could trigger traps, or worse… summon something we're not ready for."
Suddenly, a soft, almost ethereal chime rang out, though none of them had touched a bell. The sound echoed throughout the chamber, growing louder and more distorted as it reverberated off the walls.
Ruchir's hand instinctively reached for his sword. "Everyone, stay alert."
The ground beneath them trembled slightly, and the atmosphere in the room shifted.
The once dormant bells began to vibrate subtly, as if responding to the echo of the initial chime. From the shadows of the chamber, the first adversaries emerged.
They weren't human. Cloaked in darkness, they resembled spectral figures—warped and twisted echoes of the past.
Each one carried a bell, a smaller version of the hundred hanging above, and their presence sent a chill down the spines of the group.
Mei took a step back, her eyes wide. "What are those things?"
"Guardians," Ruchir muttered, gripping the hilt of his sword tighter. "This trial isn't just about the bells… it's about surviving long enough to figure out how to ring them in the right order."
Huojin rolled his shoulders, the fire in his eyes igniting. "Then let's not waste any time."
One of the spectral figures glided toward them, the bell in its hand tolling softly with each step.
As it approached, the chime became louder, vibrating through the air and shaking the very ground beneath their feet.
"They're using the sound to disorient us!" Ruchir shouted, his voice barely cutting through the overwhelming tolling of the bells.
Zhen clenched his fists, trying to stay focused. "Then let's make sure they don't get the chance to ring them again."
Huojin was the first to move. With a fierce battle cry, he lunged at the closest figure, his fists crackling with fire.
As his blow connected, the spectral guardian dissolved into mist, its bell falling to the ground with a harsh clang.
But before they could celebrate, two more figures appeared, each ringing their bells in a chaotic symphony.
Mei gritted her teeth as she unsheathed her weapon, a thin blade shimmering with energy. "These things just keep coming. We have to figure out the pattern fast, or we're going to be overwhelmed."
Ruchir took a deep breath, focusing his senses on the bells overhead. He could feel the trial testing him—not just his physical strength, but his mind.
There was a rhythm to this place, a hidden order beneath the chaos.
"The bells are in harmony with each other," Ruchir said, his voice calm but urgent. "We have to listen carefully. Each guardian corresponds to a bell. When they ring, they trigger the larger ones."
Li frowned, dodging a spectral figure's swipe. "So we wait for them to ring and then strike the right bell?"
"Yes, but it's more than that," Ruchir replied, cutting down another guardian. "We need to follow the sequence—every chime is part of a bigger puzzle."
The group fought hard, each member fending off the spectral guardians while Ruchir tried to make sense of the bells' eerie tolling.
The sound was maddening, growing louder with every guardian that appeared, but Ruchir's mind stayed sharp. He had noticed something—certain bells overhead only vibrated when specific guardians rang their smaller ones.
"They're connected," Ruchir muttered to himself, blocking an attack with his sword. "Each guardian is tied to a bell. We need to stop them from ringing the wrong sequence, or it'll keep summoning more."
"Ruchir!" Mei shouted, cutting down two figures with a flurry of strikes. "What's the plan?"
Ruchir's eyes darted across the chamber. "We need to isolate the right bells. Every time a guardian rings, find the matching bell and stop it from vibrating. Huojin, Mei, you handle the ones on the left. Zhen, Li, take the right. I'll cover the center."
With a nod, the group moved into action, splitting up to cover different parts of the room. The guardians came at them in waves now, their numbers growing with every misstep.
But the group fought with newfound purpose, their movements synchronized, each trusting the other.
Huojin smashed through one guardian with a flaming uppercut, his eyes quickly scanning for the matching bell.
"Got it!" he shouted, leaping toward one of the larger bells and striking it with his flame-imbued fist. The bell's ominous vibration ceased immediately, the sound disappearing into the void.
Mei danced through the battlefield, her blade slicing through another figure. "One more down," she said breathlessly, as she too targeted a bell, sending it into silence.
Ruchir fought fiercely in the center, his sword a blur of steel and light as he cut through guardian after guardian.
But his mind was still focused on the bells above, on the subtle vibrations and shifts in tone. He could feel the pattern emerging now, the solution within reach. But they were running out of time.
"We're close!" Ruchir shouted, deflecting a spectral swipe aimed at his head. "Just a few more!"
Zhen, usually so lighthearted, had a look of grim determination on his face as he wrestled with a particularly stubborn guardian.
"You better be right about this, Ruchir," he muttered, before smashing the creature into the ground and sprinting toward the final bell on his side.
Li, quieter but no less focused, dispatched his target with surgical precision, his spear striking true. "It's done," he said quietly, his eyes locking onto Ruchir. "What now?"
Ruchir could feel the pressure mounting. The last few guardians were closing in, their bells tolling louder than ever, but the room had grown quieter.
Only a few of the larger bells still vibrated, their sound weak but insistent.
"Finish them!" Ruchir shouted. "Hit the final bells and we're through!"
With a unified cry, the group moved as one, each member targeting the last of the vibrating bells. Huojin's fiery fist slammed into one, Mei's blade rang off another, and Zhen and Li finished the final two.
As the last bell fell silent, the guardians dissolved into mist, their haunting chimes fading into nothingness. The room, once alive with sound and chaos, was now eerily still.
They stood there, breathing heavily, the weight of the trial pressing down on them.
Ruchir wiped the sweat from his brow, his chest rising and falling with exhaustion. "We did it," he said, his voice hoarse but filled with relief. "The sequence... we stopped them."
But just as they allowed themselves a moment of respite, a deep, resonant toll echoed from above.
Everyone froze, looking up to see the largest bell in the chamber begin to vibrate.
"Is this… part of the trial?" Mei asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Ruchir's eyes narrowed. "It's not over yet."
___
As the deep toll from the largest bell echoed through the chamber, the group stood frozen, their moment of triumph quickly turning into a moment of dread.
The bell was enormous, hanging from the very ceiling of the chamber, its sound reverberating through their bones.
The vibration it caused made the entire chamber seem alive, like the walls themselves were breathing.
Zhen was the first to break the silence. "I was really hoping that was the victory bell, you know?" He grinned weakly. "You know, like the 'congratulations, you win' kind of thing?"
Huojin rolled his eyes, his fists still smoldering with the remnants of his last fire attack. "I knew it was too easy."
Ruchir, however, had his eyes locked on the bell. The tolling was unsettling, but there was something else—something subtle that he couldn't shake.
"No, this is different," Ruchir muttered, his voice low. "The smaller bells had a pattern. This one… it's out of sync with everything."
"Out of sync?" Mei asked, her fingers still gripping her sword tightly. "What do you mean?"
Ruchir's brow furrowed. "This isn't part of the trial. It's something else. Something… wrong."
Zhen sighed dramatically. "Great. Just when I thought we'd get out of here without losing our minds, we've got a rogue bell. I knew bells were shady."
Li, quiet as always, stepped forward, his spear in hand. "So, what do we do? Smash it?"
Huojin, ever the blunt force strategist, nodded in agreement. "I like that plan."
Ruchir shook his head, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword tightly. "No. If we smash it without knowing why it's tolling, we might trigger something worse. "
"Remember, this realm tests more than just our strength. It's testing our minds, our emotions."
Zhen snickered. "Great. Emotional support bells. Just what we need."
The vibration of the bell grew louder, almost as if it was reacting to their indecision. The ground beneath their feet began to tremble slightly, and small cracks appeared along the walls.
"Okay, okay!" Huojin said, his fiery fists flaring up again. "We either smash this thing or figure out the puzzle before it brings the whole place down on our heads!"
Mei glanced around the chamber. "Ruchir, do you have a plan? Because it seems like we've only got two options: solve the problem or get crushed."
Ruchir took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment, trying to focus.
His mind raced through everything they had encountered so far—the bells, the guardians, the emotional amplifications.
There had to be a reason for all of it, a clue to the larger bell.
Then it hit him.
