Journey of the Scholar

Chapter 191: Chapter 190: Three Fruits?

As the group trudged forward, the fruits now firmly behind them, Huojin wiped his brow and sighed in relief. "Good riddance. I don't know what those fruits were, but I didn't like the look of them."

Zhen, on the other hand, looked longingly back at where the fruits had been. "Come on, they weren't that bad. You all act like I was about to bite into poison."

Mei rolled her eyes. "You were about to bite into poison. That's the problem."

Ruchir, always the one to keep the group focused, spoke up. "Let's keep moving. Whatever those fruits were, they're not worth our time. We have bigger concerns."

With that, the group continued their journey through the labyrinthine paths of the secret realm. The air was dense with the tension of a place untouched by time, and yet, there was a strange sense of peace as they pressed forward.

But that peace was short-lived.

Not even fifteen minutes later, Mei abruptly stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening. "Wait… are those…?"

Ahead of them, sitting innocently on the ground, were the very same fruits. The golden, crimson, and ethereal blue fruits gleamed as if nothing had changed.

"What the—?!" Zhen laughed, half in disbelief. "It's like they missed us! Didn't we just leave these behind?"

Huojin's hand instinctively reached for his weapon. "This isn't funny. How did they get here?"

Ruchir stepped forward, eyeing the fruits cautiously. "It's impossible. We've been walking in a straight line. There's no way they could've moved ahead of us."

Zhen, as carefree as ever, squatted next to the golden fruit and gave it a little pat. "Looks like we've got company. Maybe they just really like us."

Mei chuckled, her tension easing slightly as she playfully crouched beside him. "I'll name this one… Sparkles." She pointed to the ethereal blue fruit. "And this one can be… Red Fury." She gestured to the crimson fruit with a grin. "And that one," she pointed to the golden fruit, "will be… Goldie."

Zhen, joining in the joke, picked up the golden fruit and cradled it like a pet. "Goldie and I are gonna go on some big adventures. I'll train him well. Maybe he'll grow into a mystical beast one day."

Mei raised an eyebrow and smirked. "You should try giving them commands. See if they listen."

Zhen, not one to shy away from a challenge, set the golden fruit down. "Alright, Goldie. Stay." He put his hands on his hips and stared at the fruit as if expecting it to obey.

The fruit, of course, did nothing. It pulsed gently, almost mockingly.

"Well, that's a start," Zhen said, scratching his head.

Mei, trying to suppress her laughter, crossed her arms. "Not exactly obedient, is it?"

Ruchir, watching the scene unfold, shook his head. "You two can joke all you want, but this is no coincidence. These fruits are following us. We need to figure out why."

Huojin, who had been unusually quiet, suddenly snapped. "Enough with the jokes! We don't have time for this. Ruchir's right. We need to focus on the trial, not play babysitter to some cursed fruit!"

The sudden outburst left the group momentarily stunned. Huojin wasn't usually one to lose his temper, but now his irritation was palpable. His eyes flared with frustration as he looked at the others.

"Whoa, relax," Zhen said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "It's just a little fun."

"Fun?" Huojin growled. "That's the problem with you, Zhen. You never take anything seriously!"

Mei glanced between them, sensing the tension rising. "Alright, calm down, both of you. We'll figure this out."

But Huojin wasn't done. "Calm down? You've been treating this whole journey like some kind of joke since the beginning!"

Ruchir stepped in, his voice steady but commanding. "Enough, Huojin. We're all on edge. There's no need to start turning on each other."

Huojin clenched his fists, his body still rigid with anger, but he took a deep breath and stepped back.

Mei, trying to lighten the mood, turned back to the fruits. "Alright, alright. Let's just keep moving. If these fruits want to follow us, fine. But we're not going to sit here arguing about it."

As they began walking again, Zhen continued to carry Goldie, cradling it like a newborn. Every now and then, he'd glance over at the others and make a little joke under his breath. "You know, I think Goldie here really understands me."

But as time passed, the mood in the group began to shift.

It started small—minor disagreements over which path to take, a few complaints about the pace of the journey. But soon, the tension escalated. Mei became increasingly reckless, insisting on taking shortcuts and ignoring potential dangers. Huojin's temper grew shorter with every passing moment, and Zhen's jokes became more frequent, and more inappropriate.

Ruchir, always the calm and steady leader, found himself growing more controlling, desperate to keep the group in line. But the harder he tried, the worse things seemed to get.

At one point, Mei and Huojin nearly came to blows over something as trivial as which direction to turn at a fork in the path.

"This way makes the most sense!" Mei insisted, her eyes flashing with irritation. "It's faster!"

"You're going to get us all killed if you keep rushing ahead like that!" Huojin shouted, stepping toward her, his fists clenched.

"I'm going to get us killed?" Mei scoffed. "You're the one dragging your feet! We'll never get out of here if we don't move faster!"

"Both of you, stop!" Ruchir snapped, stepping between them. His patience was wearing thin, and it showed. "We're not splitting up over something like this."

But the tension in the air was thick, and no one seemed willing to back down.

Zhen, sensing the growing animosity, tried to break the mood with another joke. "Hey, maybe we should ask Goldie for directions. He seems to know where he's going."

But this time, no one laughed.

Ruchir turned to Zhen, his voice hard. "Zhen, stop it. This isn't the time."

Zhen's grin faded, and he glanced away, clearly uncomfortable with the sudden shift in Ruchir's tone.

As they continued on, the air grew heavier, more oppressive. Every small disagreement felt like a potential explosion, and it wasn't long before the group was walking in near silence, the fruits still trailing them, their pulsing glow an eerie reminder of the unseen force at play.

Eventually, Ruchir couldn't take it anymore. He stopped and turned to face the group, his face grim. "Something's wrong. Can't you feel it? The fruits… they're not just following us. They're affecting us."

Mei, still simmering with frustration, crossed her arms. "You're saying the fruits are… what? Messing with our emotions?"

"Look at us!" Ruchir exclaimed. "We've been at each other's throats ever since those fruits appeared. We need to figure out what they are and how to stop whatever they're doing to us."

Huojin, his anger still simmering just beneath the surface, glanced down at the fruits. "So what do we do? Smash them?"

Zhen, who had been oddly quiet for once, shook his head. "I don't know if that's a good idea. What if breaking them makes things worse?"

The group fell into an uneasy silence, each of them staring at the pulsing fruits that refused to leave them alone.

Finally, Ruchir took a deep breath. "Let's keep moving. But stay alert. Something is happening, and we need to figure it out before it gets worse."

And with that, the group pressed forward, their steps heavy with both uncertainty and the weight of the growing tension.

Ruchir felt a chill creep up his spine as they walked deeper into the secret realm. His eyes kept drifting toward the fruits that followed them, their soft glow pulsing rhythmically. It was as if the fruits were alive, watching them, waiting.

The tension in the air had become almost unbearable, each member of the group snapping at the slightest provocation. Huojin's temper flared more easily, Mei was becoming reckless, and Zhen's jokes had shifted from playful to unsettling. Even Ruchir, usually calm and collected, felt a strange weight pressing on his chest.

Something was wrong.

He glanced at the fruits again, frowning as he noticed how their glow seemed to intensify whenever there was a disagreement. A flicker of recognition sparked in his mind. He had read about trials like this before, trials where the challenge was not just physical but emotional and mental.

These fruits… they weren't just strange artifacts. They were testing them—no, more than that, they were feeding off them.

"Wait," Ruchir said, his voice cutting through the group's strained silence. They all stopped, looking at him with a mixture of irritation and exhaustion.

"What now?" Huojin snapped, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword as if itching for a fight. "We've wasted enough time with these cursed fruits. Let's just destroy them and move on."

"No," Ruchir said firmly. He knelt down, inspecting the fruits more closely. Their glow seemed to pulse in time with the group's emotional state. The more tension and frustration, the brighter the fruits became. It wasn't a coincidence. "Destroying them won't work. Don't you see? They're feeding off us—our emotions, our conflicts."

Mei, her usual lightheartedness replaced with an edge of recklessness, scoffed. "Feeding off us? They're fruits, Ruchir, not some kind of soul-sucking monsters."

Zhen, who had been unusually quiet, frowned. "He's right." His voice was unusually serious. "Look at how they glow whenever we argue. They're amplifying our emotions. They want us to fight. They want us to break."

Ruchir nodded, relieved that at least someone else was seeing it. "The secret realm tests more than just our strength. It tests our minds, our emotions. If we don't get ourselves under control, these fruits will overwhelm us."

"But how?" Huojin asked, his frustration evident. "How do we control something like this? We're all on edge, and these things are making it worse!"

Ruchir stood up, his mind racing. The fruits were amplifying their inner turmoil, pushing them to the brink. But why? What was the purpose? Was it to see if they could overcome their personal conflicts? Or was it something more sinister?
