Journey of the Scholar

Chapter 173: Chapter 172: Elemental Trial

As Ruchir and the True Sun Sect disciples—Huojin, Mei, Li, and Zhen—stepped deeper into the labyrinthine paths of the secret realm, they entered an enormous, open chamber.

The walls were jagged, formed of ancient stone, and the ground felt as though it had been molded from fire and earth. An oppressive silence hung in the air, disturbed only by the occasional crackle of molten lava bubbling nearby.

Huojin, the leader of the group, sniffed the air, his fiery aura igniting faintly. "This place reeks of elemental power," he muttered, tightening his grip on the flaming spear he carried.

Mei rolled her eyes and flicked a small ball of fire between her fingers. "Let's hope it's not as boring as the last one. Rock monsters—really? I almost fell asleep."

Ruchir, however, had learned by now to expect the unexpected. His eyes swept the arena, noticing faint engravings on the ground that glowed with shifting colors. "This is no ordinary chamber," he said, his tone serious. "We should be prepared for anything."

As if on cue, a rumbling sound echoed from the depths of the chamber. The ground beneath them began to shake violently, fissures spreading as the temperature rose drastically. Without warning, the ground erupted into flames, and from the lava pooled at the edges of the chamber, a towering figure emerged.

It was the Fire Guardian, a monstrous being of pure flame, its body composed of roaring infernos and molten rock. Its eyes blazed like miniature suns, casting a scorching heatwave toward the group.

Li stepped forward, his hands already glowing with a deep red flame. "Looks like we've got our first elemental guardian. Fire meets fire, huh?" He smirked.

Ruchir, observing from the back, squinted. "Not so fast. This one is more than just a fire beast."

The Fire Guardian raised its massive arms, summoning pillars of flame from the ground. The intense heat caused the very air around them to shimmer. With a deafening roar, the guardian hurled fireballs toward the group.

"Scatter!" Huojin yelled as he darted to the side, his spear igniting with a fiery glow. He deflected a fireball with a precise swipe, sending it crashing harmlessly into the wall.

Mei unleashed a flurry of fiery projectiles, each one swirling with heat as they collided with the Fire Guardian, only to be absorbed into its body.

"Seriously? Our fire attacks are useless!" Mei groaned in frustration.

"Of course they are!" Zhen grunted as he narrowly dodged another fireball. "It's made of fire! We need to try something else."

Ruchir, his sword already unsheathed, thought quickly. He glanced at the ground beneath the guardian, noticing the faint traces of cooled lava that hadn't yet been reabsorbed by the creature.

With a flick of his wrist, Ruchir dipped his sword into the inkwell attached to his belt. "Time for some calligraphy," he muttered, slashing through the air with rapid strokes. Each swing left behind lines of ink that floated in the air like elegant brushstrokes.

The ink condensed into sharp, black tendrils that shot toward the Fire Guardian's legs, striking at the patches of cooled rock. With a sizzling hiss, the ink solidified the molten lava, causing the guardian to stumble.

"There! Attack the parts that aren't on fire!" Ruchir called out, his ink strokes already forming more tendrils.

Li and Zhen exchanged glances. "Formation two!" Huojin barked.

The True Sun Sect disciples regrouped instantly, forming a semi-circle. Zhen stomped on the ground, creating a firewall that encased the lower half of the Fire Guardian's body in solid rock. Meanwhile, Mei's fireballs targeted specific areas, heating them just enough to weaken the molten exterior, and Li sent precise blasts of controlled flame that hardened upon impact.

The Fire Guardian roared in frustration as its movements slowed. With a final slash of his ink-coated sword, Ruchir delivered the finishing blow—an elegant brushstroke that sliced through the creature's now-cooled core.

The Fire Guardian collapsed, dissolving into a puddle of molten rock that quickly cooled into black stone.

Panting slightly, Huojin wiped his brow. "One down. Three to go."

"Fire wasn't much of a challenge," Mei scoffed, though her tone held a note of relief. "Let's hope the others are more interesting."

As they moved to the next arena, the chamber's temperature dropped drastically. Ruchir felt the air grow dense with moisture, and a soft mist began to form. Before they could react, an enormous Water Guardian emerged from the far end of the chamber, its body composed entirely of swirling water.

"I bet fire's not going to work on this one," Li muttered sarcastically.

"Good guess," Ruchir said dryly. "We need a new approach."

The Water Guardian raised its arms, summoning waves of water that crashed toward them like tidal waves. With a swift movement, Huojin planted his spear into the ground, creating a firewall around the group to block the water.

"It won't hold for long!" he shouted. The water was already beginning to seep through the cracks in the flames.

"Allow me," Ruchir said. He stepped forward, his sword glowing with the ink he had infused it with earlier. With a series of intricate strokes, he drew a set of symbols in the air. The ink solidified, forming a series of barriers that absorbed the water.

The Water Guardian, sensing the shift, changed tactics. The entire arena began to flood, and water began rising rapidly. The group scrambled for higher ground as the Water Guardian sent waves of liquid crashing against them.

"Everyone, get ready for another formation!" Huojin yelled, the True Sun Sect disciples already preparing their next move.

"We're fire cultivators! This is going to be a nightmare!" Mei exclaimed, barely dodging a powerful wave of water.

Zhen raised his hands and used fire to create steam clouds, briefly slowing down the Water Guardian's attacks. "We'll have to use heat to turn this water into vapor!"

Together, the True Sun Sect disciples unleashed a synchronized attack of fire that targeted the water around the guardian. Steam rose, obscuring their vision, but slowing the guardian's movements.

Ruchir, meanwhile, had noticed something peculiar—the Water Guardian's movements were sluggish when the water level was low. It's tied to the water! he realized.

"Drain the arena!" Ruchir shouted. "It can't move without water!"

Huojin, catching on, nodded. "Everyone, focus on evaporating the water around us!"

The group combined their fire techniques, and slowly but surely, the water began to recede. The Water Guardian's towering figure began to shrink as its source of power diminished.

"Almost there!" Zhen shouted, sweat dripping down his brow as he continued firing bursts of heat at the water.

With one final attack, the Water Guardian collapsed into a harmless puddle, leaving the group panting and soaked.

"Two down," Huojin said, grinning. "What's next?"

As if in answer, the ground beneath them began to shake violently. Huge slabs of rock jutted out from the ground, and from the very earth itself, a colossal Earth Guardian emerged, its body composed of dense stone and dirt. It stood, unyielding, like a mountain in human form.

"Of course," Mei sighed. "The Earth Guardian."

"This one's going to be tough," Li said, eyeing the dense rocks that formed the creature's body. "Fire might not be enough."

The Earth Guardian raised its fists and slammed them into the ground, causing a massive earthquake that sent rocks flying toward the group. They scattered to avoid the projectiles, but the creature's next attack was even more devastating. Boulders the size of carriages rained down from the ceiling, forcing the group to scramble for cover.

"This is insane!" Zhen yelled, narrowly dodging a falling rock. "How are we supposed to fight that?"

Ruchir, however, was already formulating a plan. He noticed that the Earth Guardian was slow—massive and powerful, but slow. If we can disrupt its core…

Ruchir ran to the center of the arena, dipping his sword into his ink pot once more. With rapid strokes, he created a complex symbol on the ground beneath the Earth Guardian.

"Draw it over here!" Ruchir shouted. "I need it on this symbol!"

Huojin, catching on, charged forward with his flaming spear. He taunted the Earth Guardian, baiting it toward the symbol. Mei and Li followed suit, launching controlled fire blasts to direct the creature's movements.

As the Earth Guardian stepped onto the symbol, Ruchir activated the trap. The ground beneath the guardian trembled, and the symbol glowed with a bright light. The earth around the guardian began to collapse, swallowing the creature into a pit.

The Earth Guardian roared in fury, but it was too late. The ground sealed shut, trapping the creature beneath the earth.

The group stood in silence, catching their breath.

"Three down," Mei said, shaking her head. "I'm starting to miss the rock monsters."

Before they could relax, however, a loud metallic sound echoed through the chamber. From the far side of the arena, a massive Steel Guardian appeared, its body gleaming in the dim light. Its arms were made of sharp blades, and its chest was covered in intricate, rune-etched armor.

Ruchir's eyes widened. "Well, this is new."

The Steel Guardian raised its sword-like arms, ready to attack.

"Here we go again," Huojin muttered.
