Chapter 11: Motivations
It was Sunday. Itachi walked with almost absolute tranquility through the streets of Kuoh City, calmly and serenely observing the scene before him.
There was no party, nor anything like a theater or performance—just people walking back and forth. Itachi watched this, observed it, and truly felt satisfied.
"If only this kind of peace had been achieved in the old ninja world," Itachi murmured quietly. He breathed in the sun-warmed air and simply decided to walk, as he had done so many times in this world.
Walking, for Itachi, was one of his favorite things to do on a Sunday. Just passing by, seeing the people and their expressions, filled his heart with a sense of happiness.
Because Itachi could see—the sad child, the cheerful old lady, the hurried young people—all of them with a story to tell, living a beautiful life.
Itachi was about to continue his walk when he noticed something unusual. Near Kuoh Park, hidden among the overgrowth, lay a girl. Her body was almost collapsed against the green grass, barely concealed by the tall weeds.
Itachi approached with curiosity. This was a scene he had never witnessed in Kuoh before. He took several steps forward and was finally able to observe the girl in more detail.
Disheveled yet still bright blonde hair, a pretty face with a small nose, naturally red lips, and a body that was relatively average for a girl her age.
Itachi noticed whip marks, bruises, and more on the girl's body. He narrowed his eyes in confusion, his mind running through several scenarios until he decided to take the girl to his house to care for her.
His reason for doing this was simple: from her clothes and appearance, she seemed foreign. Not only that, he had also sensed a strange kind of energy within her body.
Using his ninja abilities, Itachi quickly took the girl and returned to his home.
...
Some time later...
Asia Argento awoke, her heavy eyelids barely finding the strength to open. She felt her body—her bones, her skin—everything screamed in constant pain and exhaustion.
To say she felt deep pain coming from every inch of her being would be an understatement. Nevertheless, Asia Argento gritted her teeth, endured the pain, and tried to sit up.
She heard footsteps approaching. In a mentally unstable state, she began to tremble, her breathing quickened, and her mind, filled with absolute terror, sent electric signals of danger throughout her body.
The soft bed and blanket she clutched did nothing to soothe her overwhelmed spirit.
Many thoughts passed through her mind—blurry memories where shadowy figures tortured her, images her mind had fought to lock away and forget. She began to make desperate whimpers when a hand gently rested on her head.
Then she heard the words of a young man. "Are you okay?" It didn't sound like a real question, but more like words saying, "I'm here, there's nothing to fear," or maybe she was just exaggerating everything in her current state.
Asia slowly moved her pupils, and her blurry vision gradually cleared. She saw, with total and absolute surprise, an unfamiliar—but perfect—face.
She blinked, took a little breath, and almost as if it were her imagination, saw a strange, radiant light behind Itachi, shadowing his face and making him look like a god.
Her body relaxed almost instantly. Her whimpers turned into soft, calm breaths, while her mouth slowly began to move.
"W-Who a-Are y-you?" Asia stammered, wanting to know the boy's identity.
"My name is Itachi Uchiha. I found you in a simply… pitiful state," he said, his face showing absolute seriousness.
He hadn't seen such brutality since investigating the victims of Orochimaru in his previous world.
Asia's body looked like it had passed through Orochimaru's hands and had then been discarded like trash in the park.
"I-tachi… U-Uchiha…" Asia smiled, her eyes filling with tears, her vision again blurring because of them.
"Are you… an angel sent by God?" she asked, regaining a bit of her sweet voice. Itachi frowned slightly, then shook his head. This response seemed to sadden Asia, who looked at the ceiling for a moment before smiling even more brightly.
"Who did this to you?" Itachi asked, curious.
There was a moment of silence in which Asia simply stared at the ceiling and blinked. Then, after a minute, she finally opened her mouth.
"I was brought here by Miss Raynare. I was under the care of a church when Mister Dohnaseek and Miss Kalawarner started bothering me…" Asia began to recount her story.
To summarize, Itachi could say that she had lived a truly tragic life—deceived by a demon into healing him and eventually falling into the hands of some fallen angels who tortured her until she ended up in that state.
While her story could make anyone in this world cry, for Itachi, it was simply a tragic story. The ninja world had desensitized him to these kinds of things.
"Itachi, I…" Asia murmured after finishing her story. Some tears rolled from her eyes down her cheeks, her mind filled with many thoughts but finding comfort in the boy in front of her.
"Thank you," she finally said, still in pain. She smiled at the end, slightly surprising Itachi.
Seeing this girl reminded the ninja a little of Naruto from his past life. He was honestly surprised that a girl could smile after all that had happened.
"I'm going to need some time to recover and use my healing abilities on myself. Will it be—?"
Itachi nodded before she could finish her sentence.
"If you need to stay here, it's fine. There won't be a problem," he said. Asia smiled at his words.
"God bless you, Itachi," she murmured before breathing calmly, relaxing her entire body. However, before she could fall asleep, Itachi suddenly asked:
"Why can you smile after all this?"
He had once known Naruto's motivation, but frankly found it a bit stupid. So, looking at Asia Argento, Itachi felt genuine curiosity about what her motivations were.
Asia opened her eyes again, a trace of emotion running through her body as she looked at Itachi.
"Well, there are many reasons why I can smile after going through so many hardships."
She could recall several scenarios in her life. Many moments were simply heartbreaking, but despite it all, Asia always focused on the best memories.
"For example, once an old lady thanked me by giving me a delicious tart. She said I'd love the flavor… Even though I got sick afterwards. I guess strawberries don't agree with me..."
"Or the time a boy lifted my skirt and slapped my thigh. He told me he was helping me kill a fly that flew by, so I thanked him profusely."
"Oh! Or even better, the time when a senior nun asked me to cover for her for a day so she could pray for me. So I came out winning, hehehe."
As Asia began recounting some memories, Itachi couldn't help but facepalm. He shook his head for a moment before raising a hand to stop the girl from continuing.
"No need to go on, I understand… it's a shame." Itachi smiled, then gently patted Asia's head with a face full of pity. "It really is a shame. But hey, having a disability isn't always a bad thing… I suppose." The ninja sighed.
"Eh?" Asia didn't understand, though she enjoyed the pats on her head. Why did she feel like she was being treated like a girl with some kind of mental disability?
A trace of strange discomfort and frustration crossed her heart as she tried to smile to chase those feelings away.
