It Seems My Job Aptitude Didn't Come with Human Rights

Chapter 10

As usual, we conducted a simple exchange and went beast hunting in the forest with around ten people. However, the ones who handled trapping and preemptive attacks on the magical beasts were the armored beastmen, and I dealt the final blow.

「Master Lars! Are you ready!?」

「Yes! Sling Rifle!」

When I uttered the skill's name, a gun with a shape meant to be held with both hands materialized, consuming my magic power. Incidentally, it had a toy-like appearance, and a closer look revealed that a long, string-like thing was stretched across the top, with a fist-sized stone resting on it.

The targets were small monsters called little goblins. At that moment, there were three goblins, each being drawn away by the beastmen.

I aimed with both hands and pulled the trigger, hitting the back of a goblin's head. I managed to take it down in one hit. Incidentally, there was a boy accompanying us this time, who seemed to be an archer. He gracefully took down goblins with his bow—a cool sight.

While it's said that gaining experience points is the most difficult for merchants, with everyone's cooperation, it was exceptionally smooth. The beastmen who had worked for years at the count's estate helped us, and they reached out to those who hunted magical beasts and worked as mercenaries outside, and this was a great success.

They willingly cooperated for only a small allowance, but the outcome was enormous. I was able to level up safely.

Meanwhile, although I pondered daily, more and more unknown or under-researched aspects kept emerging, which was troubling.

Firstly, I didn't feel any sense of leveling up, and grasping my current status or skill points was challenging. Normally, levels up to around thirty should rise quickly, but I had no idea what my current level was.

I must have defeated hundreds of small monsters like little goblins, red boars, and black wolves, so my level should have surpassed fifty by now.

Acquiring skills corresponding to the level would become an obvious benchmark, but I couldn't afford to waste skill points.

To build the ultimate skill set, it was crucial to advance to a higher class while retaining as many skill points gained from being a merchant as possible.

For knights or mages, they might gauge their level or proficiency through the rough increment of strength or magic power, but the stat that increased the most for a merchant was dexterity (DEX). Frankly, I couldn't clearly tell if I had become more dexterous.

However, I felt that even with a fair use of the sling rifle, I had plenty of magic power left, suggesting the possibility of my level being higher than expected.

While leading a fulfilling life every day, the internal squabbles at the count's house didn't bother me at all. Getting ridiculed by Nils and Erik or receiving snide remarks from Olivia was something I could laugh off.

Even when some servants snickered as I passed by or if Johanson reprimanded me unreasonably, I could apologize without sulking.

Still, it was bothering me that there was no discussion about going to the Academy, an educational institution typically attended from the age of ten, and no preparations were made.

Well, in any case... I just hoped to become the ideal magitech engineer with my envisioned skill set. With that in mind, I devoted all my spare time to leveling up, but the situation took a drastic turn.

One morning, shortly after waking up, father summoned me.

Perhaps he wanted to lecture me after swallowing another one of Olivia's lies. However, come to think of it, he hadn't celebrated my tenth birthday. It was over half a year ago, but maybe Father finally remembered it.

「... I suppose that's not likely, huh~」

I let out a dry laugh, becoming somewhat self-deprecating. Irinya tilted her head and looked at me, but I conveyed with a wry smile and a wave of my hand that it was nothing.

When I entered the study where Father awaited, known as the Johanson Room, father was there with a stern expression. He instructed that no one else should enter, so only Johanson and the lovely Lars were in the study. Father sat in the chair behind the study desk, while I stood on the opposite side at eye level with each other.

After staring silently for several seconds, just as I was wondering what this was about, Johanson spoke.

「... Lars, I have unfortunate news.」

「What is it?」

The atmosphere was ominous. Despite thinking that, I asked back. To that, Johanson furrowed his brow and let out a sigh.

「... In our country, noble boys over the age of ten are required to enroll in the Academy. There's an entrance exam, but most upper-class nobles end up enrolling in the Royal Academy in the capital. However, to be honest, I don't believe you would pass.」

「I see... However, I believe that my general education and swordsmanship are more than adequate,」

I answered, and Johanson's frown deepened.

No matter how little he knew about his son, to be oblivious to this extent was too much. The genius Lars, who could handle calculations beyond the four basic arithmetic operations comparable to this nation's mathematicians right from the start, was hailed as a prodigy by the beastman servants, former merchants, teaching him.

Meanwhile, from the former mercenary beastman who had been mainly teaching me swordsmanship for the past two years, I was praised for being quite skilled for my age.

Finally realizing my situation, my gray matter recalled the context I'd been placed in.

Former slaves and beastman servants occupied the lowest rank. Near Johanson were the chief butler, head maid, and the knights, people likely devoid of any opportunity for conversation. Moreover, every high-ranking servant was part of Olivia's faction.

In that case, even if Father questioned any servants he was concerned about, there's a possibility all of them answered, 「Lars is always slacking off and achieving nothing.」

I finally realized this situation, apparent to anyone.
