Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Wang Yan: I Can’t Fulfill This Condition

Outside the wounded soldiers' camp, Wang Yan was sitting by a bonfire. A lamb was being roasted over the flames, while her guards stood in a protective perimeter around her.

"Who is Wang Yan, the battalion commander?"

At that moment, Zhao Feng stepped out of the camp. Seeing the scene before him, he immediately spoke up.

One of the guards approached, gave Zhao Feng a quick glance, and asked, "Are you Zhao Feng?"

"Yes," Zhao Feng nodded.

"Follow me," the guard said, leading the way without hesitation.

"Personal guards? Only generals or those of higher rank are allowed to have personal guards. Could this battalion commander be that little miss I saw in Yangcheng before?" Zhao Feng mused as he noticed the formidable aura of the guards.

His impression of these guards was strong they were not easily forgotten.

Under the guard's guidance, Zhao Feng soon arrived at the bonfire.

"It is that little miss," he thought as his gaze fell on Wang Yan.

"She's a woman disguised as a man."

Even at a glance, her disguise was easy to see through. Despite tying her hair up like the other soldiers, her fair complexion and petite stature gave her away. A closer look revealed her lack of an Adam's apple.

As Zhao Feng approached, the guard by Wang Yan saluted and said, "Commander, the man has been brought."

Wang Yan immediately stood up and turned to look at Zhao Feng. A flicker of surprise flashed across her face as if taken aback by his appearance.

"He's so young!" Wang Yan thought to herself.

During yesterday's battle, Zhao Feng had been covered in blood, making it impossible to discern his face.

"Are you Zhao Feng?" she asked tentatively.

"Yes." Zhao Feng nodded, then clasped his hands in salute. "May I ask what business the commander has with me?"

"You may leave us," Wang Yan said, waving a hand to dismiss the guards.

"Understood." The guards obediently retreated.

Once they were alone, Wang Yan smiled and bowed slightly toward Zhao Feng. "I came specifically to thank you for saving my life. If it weren't for your intervention yesterday, I would have fallen to the enemy's spear."

"Saved you?" Zhao Feng paused, searching his memory.

He vaguely recalled rescuing someone while killing Bao Yuan yesterday, but he hadn't paid much attention at the time. After all, he had saved quite a few people during the chaos of battle.

"Fellow soldiers sharing the same cause it was merely a passing effort in the fight against the enemy. There's no need for formal thanks," Zhao Feng replied calmly.

Hearing this, Wang Yan was even more astonished by his composure.

In her experience, most people in Zhao Feng's position young, with relatively low rank would show some hint of excitement or gratitude when receiving acknowledgment from someone of her status. Yet Zhao Feng remained utterly unperturbed.

"To you, it may have been a simple act, but to me, it was a life-saving grace. I owe you my life," Wang Yan said earnestly. "Tell me what you want in return. Name a condition within my ability, and I will fulfill it."

"I don't have anything I particularly desire," Zhao Feng replied, shaking his head.

"Money? Power? You can ask for either," Wang Yan pressed, unwilling to let the matter rest.

Her upbringing as the daughter of Wang Jian, the great general of Qin, had instilled in her a strict sense of honor. She could not bear to leave a favor unreturned it would tarnish her reputation.

"I have little need for wealth; my military stipend is enough to support my family. As for power, I would have no use for it. Besides, having slain Bao Yuan, the rewards from the military merit system will not be insignificant," Zhao Feng said, still calm.

Wang Yan frowned slightly, sensing his reluctance to request anything. "Do you mean to say there's nothing you want at all?"

"If I had to choose, there is one thing," Zhao Feng said with a smile. "But can you manage it?"

"Say it," Wang Yan urged.

"I want to retire and return home. Can you make that happen?" Zhao Feng said, his gaze expectant.

If she could fulfill this wish, he would truly be grateful.

Compared to seeking fame or power in the army, Zhao Feng's priority was to serve his mother.

However, Wang Yan was stunned. "What?" she exclaimed. "You want to retire and go home?"

"Yes," Zhao Feng nodded.

"Do you realize what you're asking?"

"You killed nearly 300 enemies in this battle alone that's an extraordinary achievement. On top of that, you slew Bao Yuan, which adds even greater merit. Your actions ensured our supply lines and provisions were not disrupted by his ambush. You're a hero of this campaign!"

"With such accomplishments, you'll be promoted to several ranks and elevated in status. Your future is boundless, yet you're saying you want to retire?" Wang Yan asked incredulously.

Zhao Feng's calm demeanor did not waver. For others, retiring after achieving such glory might seem like madness, but Zhao Feng was unmoved.

"That's right," he replied simply.

Wang Yan was at a loss for words, staring at him as though trying to make sense of his reasoning.

Meanwhile, Zhao Feng's attention shifted to the roasting lamb. "Is this lamb for me?"

Still speechless, Wang Yan could only watch in confusion as Zhao Feng sat down by the fire, took out a small knife, and began carving the meat.

"Qin's military law dictates that basic service lasts two years, while elite soldiers serve for five. No one is allowed to alter this or grant an early discharge. Violating this law is punishable under Qin's strict codes."

"You're right I can't fulfill this condition," Wang Yan finally said.
