Chapter 16: Chapter 16: An Overwhelmed Wei Quan

Wei Quan stared wide-eyed at the severed head beside Zhao Feng.

"The Korean Supreme General, Bao Yuan?"

"A high-ranking general of such stature was killed by you?"

"This… this..."

Wei Quan was utterly shocked, his voice trembling as he spoke.

What was Bao Yuan's status?

He was the Supreme General of Korea a commander who held authority over an entire army. Such a position represented immense power, second only to the king. In the rigid hierarchy of the military, this was a position of unassailable prestige, commanding thousands of troops and shaping the fate of nations.

Though Korea's national strength was vastly inferior to Qin's, Bao Yuan's authority as Supreme General was undeniable. For ordinary Qin soldiers like Wei Quan, Bao Yuan was an untouchable figure.

Now, however, this once-mighty figure's head lay cold and lifeless, severed and powerless. The sight struck Wei Quan with an unprecedented sense of disbelief.

"Brother Wei, is it so surprising?" Zhao Feng quipped with a smirk. "He might have been a Supreme General, but he was still just a man, not a god."

"You're truly fearless, kid! Do you even realize the kind of power a Supreme General wields?" Wei Quan exclaimed, his voice tinged with awe.

"In my hometown, even a lowly county magistrate can dominate the land with just a handful of constables. But a Supreme General? They command thousands of troops and hold life-and-death authority over countless people. Their power is unimaginable!"

"Once, perhaps," Zhao Feng replied calmly, "but now, he's nothing more than a dead man."

If Zhao Feng had been his old self a mere commoner the idea of confronting a high-ranking official, let alone killing one, would have been laughable. Before joining the army, the highest-ranking official he'd ever seen was the village chief.

But now, things were different. Zhao Feng had power, and his strength was only growing. He believed that even if he only served for two years, he could eventually achieve a level of power that made armies meaningless.

This was the Warring States period, a time of war and conquest. Qin's unification of the land was inevitable, but Zhao Feng's thoughts wandered to the future to the chaos of the Qin dynasty's fall. Armed with his modern knowledge and growing strength, Zhao Feng couldn't help but envision himself shaping his destiny.

Could he establish a kingdom? Rule over his domain? These ambitions had crossed his mind more than once.

"Zhao, my boy," Wei Quan said, his voice breaking Zhao Feng's train of thought. "You've struck gold this time!"

"Killing the Korean Supreme General is an achievement of the highest order. No matter how many Korean soldiers you've slain, they pale in comparison to the value of this single head."

"I'd wager that this feat alone could promote you to a general!" Wei Quan said excitedly.

"A general? That'd be nice," Zhao Feng replied with a faint smile, a glimmer of anticipation in his eyes.

If he were promoted to general, how many treasure chests would he receive? Perhaps even a higher-tier chest?

"The death of a Supreme General is a monumental event," Wei Quan continued. "This will surely be reported to the Supreme Command and even to the King himself."

"Do you know what that means? It means the King will know your name. You'll gain fame throughout the army and have an incredibly bright future ahead of you!"

Seeing Zhao Feng's composed demeanor, Wei Quan grew even more animated.

"Alright, alright," Zhao Feng said, waving a hand dismissively. "Brother Wei, the reward hasn't even been granted yet. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Calm down."

"Calm down? How can I calm down?" Wei Quan exclaimed. "You killed the Korean Supreme General! My god!"

At that moment, the commotion drew the attention of the soldiers around them.

One by one, the wounded soldiers of the logistics unit began to gather, encircling Zhao Feng and Wei Quan.

"What's going on?" Zhao Feng asked, tugging on Wei Quan's sleeve.

"What now?" Wei Quan asked, still lost in his amazement.

"Look," Zhao Feng said, motioning to the crowd.

Wei Quan turned and saw the circle of soldiers surrounding them, their expressions unreadable.

His face darkened. "You don't think they overheard about the Supreme General's head and want to take it for themselves, do you?"

"I doubt it," Zhao Feng replied, shaking his head, though he was just as puzzled.

Suddenly, one of the soldiers, a military officer, stepped forward and knelt on one knee before Zhao Feng.

"Thank you, Brother Zhao, for saving our lives," the officer said earnestly.

Following his lead, the other soldiers hundreds of them, all battered and injured knelt as one.

"Thank you, Brother Zhao, for saving us!" Their collective voices rang out in unison.

This display of gratitude left Zhao Feng and Wei Quan momentarily stunned.

Zhao Feng quickly stood up, understanding their sentiments.

"Brother officer, and all my comrades," Zhao Feng said, cupping his hands in salute, "there's no need to thank me. It wasn't me who saved you; it was your courage and determination to fight that saved you."

"Brother Zhao," the officer replied, his voice trembling with emotion, "out of ten thousand comrades, only a few hundred of us remain. General Luo, the two senior officers, and nine other captains all perished. If you hadn't taken the lead and rallied us to fight back, none of us would have dared to stand our ground."

"I should have led my unit into battle, but I lost my nerve. I am ashamed to have failed my duty."

Tears streamed down the officer's face, his remorse evident.

Zhao Feng's expression softened with empathy.

The camaraderie forged in the military was deep, and seeing so many comrades fall was heartbreaking.

He bent down, picked up Bao Yuan's severed head, and raised it high for all to see.

"Brothers!" Zhao Feng shouted. "You can tell your fallen comrades this: I have avenged them!"

"This is the head of the man responsible for the ambush Bao Yuan, the Korean Supreme General!"

"He is dead! His soldiers have been annihilated!"

"The debt of our comrades' blood has been paid!"
