Chapter 95: Gathering of the S-Rank, Loss of an S-Rank
"Listen, Thorfin, unlike you, I have a very hectic schedule," said Victor. "As my father is American and my mother Japanese, I was granted dual citizenship. This was, of course, mainly because of my unique awesomeness, as everyone wants a slice of this pie! It's only unfortunate that there's only so much of me to go around…"
"I was in America a few seconds ago, and yet here I am for my fellow countrymen! Where is the appreciation in this gloomy place??"
"Gloomy?" Thorfin parroted, his voice becoming dangerously high-pitched. "You actually dare to say that when we just lost Static Baron—one of our country's S-Rank Hunters—in the continued attempts at clearing the Special High Purple-rank Gate!? A Gate that exceeds anything we have experienced thus far…!?"
Thorfin nearly raised his voice in anger when interacting with the insufferably arrogant S-Rank Hunter beside him. However, as this was a eulogy for the S-Rank Hunter they lost in the International Gate Raid, he held himself back.
Victor Rapido softly scoffed, which only served to further fuel the red giant's rage. "Even if that rash prick, Static Baron, died, so what? He reaped what he sowed by charging into the Boss's Lair head-on. His death was only his fault, and he now lies six feet under because of it!"
"You—!!"
"I'm not done speaking yet," Victor interrupted, not caring a single bit about Thorfin's growing frustration. "That High Purple-rank Gate is not even within the territory of Japan. We, like all the other offshore countries that could be affected if it breaks, are throwing away the lives of our strongest because we fear the inevitable."
"However, even if the Gate's opening is inevitable, it's not like we have to worry about it for the next few dozen years, as it is not like any other recorded Gates. Rather than appear with a set amount of monsters of a set rank contained within, like the majority of Gates, this one seems to be… evolving."
Victor briefly paused before continuing. "It was originally around the middle stages of the Red Rank roughly two years ago, and now it is of the High Purple Rank. Keep in mind that none of the various world governments even took the unusual fluctuating Gate energy signatures seriously at the time, and now look where we are…"
"Trying to prevent the inevitable is pointless, big guy. Just let it all come as it comes."
Although it seemed like the haughty S-Rank Speedster was speaking ignorantly and out of his ass, Thorfin knew better. As much as he hated him with every fiber of his being, he recognized his physical prowess. He was also fully aware of the history that Victor had with this particular Gate located at the very center of the world, in the middle of the ocean.
The very reason Victor hadn't participated in the most recent Gate Raid was because he took part in the one that came before. The Gate, still of the High Purple-rank at the time, was something that instilled into him the truest meanings of fear… It was agonizing…
'Against that "monster," even the most powerful Hunters in the world will be shredded to pieces… Even I, as the "fastest" man alive, was completely and utterly outdone in the aspect I was most proficient in… It was like a God toying with a mortal…'
Victor Rapido was confident in his ability to take on any single S-Rank Hunter in a one-on-one fight. Even if he couldn't win or was unable to penetrate the opponent's defense, he would still be faster. The matches would all either end with him as the victor or in a tie. Yet, in the face of that "Monster"—that aberration that originated straight from the abysses of hell—it wasn't even a fight. It was simply a child playing with a new toy.
The only reason Victor managed to make it out alive was because that "monster" felt… pity for him.
His expression scrunched up in hatred when just recalling that monstrous expression staring down at his haggard figure. His once joyful attitude was now soured, and it was all the red bastard's fault. However, just as he was about to give him a piece of his mind, an older, more refined man, standing at the very center of the wide wooden podium, spoke up in a heroic tone:
"With the eulogy of our brave S-Rank Hunter, Static Baron, now over, I feel it to be essential that I inform you of all the active efforts we are taking to prevent the outbreak of Gates in every prefecture and region of Japan.
From day one of the first appearance of Gates and the terrifying monsters within over a century ago, we, as the protectors of this country, have done everything to protect our fellow countrymen. And though we have lost many along the way—plenty that we cherished—we have still made it this far!
Although we remain in the dark when it comes to where these Gates appeared from or why they are becoming more numerous, we will keep pushing back this unknown force that estranges us all! Under no circumstances will we allow our mighty country to fall!!"
HOOORAAAAHH!!!
The various Hunters cheered, creating a layer of patriotism that was almost contagious.
"We, the Japanese Hunters, do not falter in the face of adversity!" shouted the refined old man. "No matter if it concerns the Gates outside our country or the tens of thousands inside it, we won't let them weaken our will! There will eventually come a day when all the Gates in our glorious country are banished off the edges of the world! As the Chairman of the Japanese Hunter's Association, I guarantee this to you!"
"But, I cannot accomplish this seemingly impossible task alone! To make the impossible possible, I will require the assistance of every single Hunter in this auditorium! And I will also need everyone present here today to spread Japanese heroism to all those who could not make it today!"
"To overcome the odds, all of us will need to work together—slaughter monsters, gather generational wealth, close all the Gates, and make Japan a safer place for the next generations to live in without constantly fearing for their lives!"
