In the United States As a Local Tyrant

Chapter 6: In the Free country

On the day of departure, all the relatives came to see him off. Hearing the repeated instructions from his parents, the blessings from his sister and brother-in-law, and Xiaoyu's reluctance, this scene seemed like a farewell.

James said with sweat all over his face, "Hey, I'm traveling, not going to Mars, what are you guys so concerned and frightened?"

The adults all laughed, but Xiaoyu kept tugging at the hem of his clothes, insisting that her uncle would fulfill his promise to take her to America.

His sister coaxed her, saying that her uncle would be back soon, but the little girl became smarter. Crying and shouting to go together.

"Xiaoyu, i promise, I will take you to America next time, and full fill all your wishes okay" Crouching down and caressing his hand over his niece head, James had to promise.

"umm.." looking at James face with puffy eyes Xiaoyu nodded cutely. She finally stopped. Carrying the tea eggs made by his mother, he got on the bus bound for the city.

James didn't stay in the provincial capital; the flight flew directly to the capital, and it was already night when he arrived.

He called Tony at the hotel and made an appointment to meet. Using the hotel computer to log on to Internet, he found that the auction in New York had ended, and the "Gemini" was sold at an average price of 1.2 million US dollars per carat, with a total price of 36 million US dollars.

In RMB, that was more than 200 million—luxury houses, sports cars, and many people would be willing to call him Wealthy.

And this was just the tip of the iceberg; the one-to-two-carat blue diamond in his hand was estimated to be even higher, and other high-quality diamonds were not far behind.

If the catalogue comes out in the future or the technology of man-made diamonds is discovered, he might really have to consider whether traveling to the moon in his lifetime is an option.

After a sleepless night, James simply hugged the computer and chatted with friends in the online group. Early the next morning, he took a taxi to the local notary office to apply for notarization of his driver's license.

The so-called driver's license notarization meant that if you wanted to drive abroad, you had to translate the certificate into the language of other countries, generally in English.

With notarization, you could drive in most states of the United States without taking another driving test, making self-driving travel more convenient.

According to the inquiry, the normal processing time was five days, but James couldn't wait that long.

But having money made things easier in this world. The "VIP" channel provided a one-hour fast pick-up service.

In the afternoon, Tony droves over to pick him up. He still took the VIP channel and went to the consulate since he needed a consulate visa to go abroad.

It was said that the passport book in the mainland was not easy to use. There was no visa-free or visa-on-arrival agreement with Europe and the United States.

Some people rushed to the consulate to ask for a visa but were rejected before they could even say a few words. When James answered the visa officer's questions, most of his responses were "no." Choosing the United States as his first international destination with a blank passport could easily result in rejection, but with the letter presented by Tony, the visa officer approved it.

Going abroad was much easier from Hong Kong or Macau, with over 100 countries offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access. James reflected on how a country's strength was also reflected in its passport—wherever you went, you had to be reviewed by visa officers at various levels.

After a busy day, James took a flight from the capital to Los Angeles, USA.

The original plan was to go directly to New York, but the flight would depart at night, and he was in a hurry.

Thankfully Tony accompanied him.

Tony said seriously, "You are our VIP customer, and the company has instructed me to provide you with every possible with satisfactory journey".

More than ten hours later, it was night in Beijing, but the sky outside the cabin was still clear. The plane landed at LAX Airport.

James and Tony walked out of the airport building with their luggage. The air was 'so' good that James felt a bit uncomfortable.

Seeing his reaction, Tony frowned. "The air in Los Angeles isn't very good."

James lowered his head and walked briskly. Compared to the big cities in China, it was still much better.

Due to a tight schedule, James stayed in a hotel near the airport and later had dinner with Tony.

He wanted to see Los Angeles, but there were no good places near the airport, so they would have needed to drive. Additionally, shopping with another man could easily be mistaken as a couple's outing in the United States.

After staying another day, they flew from the west coast to the east coast, landing in New York. At the airport, they met another person holding a sign with Tony's English name written on it.

Tony hurried forward, and James followed. The man was a white male in his 30s or 40s, with black hair, taller than James, and a beard that made him look a bit like Beckham.

He shook hands with James and said, "Mr. Feng, hello!"

"Hello!" James responded.

Tony introduced him. "This is my boss, Anthony Blulane. He came to pick you up personally."

Anthony smiled. "Please, tony I have to, Mr.Feng helped me earn more than three million dollars. Maybe we can collaborate more to bring profit to both of us!"

James smiled speechlessly. Foreigners were straightforward. But he liked it, the more they are enthusiastic, the more he could secure a safe distribution line for his diamonds.

"Please," Anthony gestured for them to follow him.

A black BMW 750 was parked in the airport parking lot. Tony helped James put his luggage away and took the driver's seat.

Anthony and James sat in the back row, chatting in English. Anthony was skilled at conversation and quickly eliminated any awkwardness.

Talking about the money, Anthony said with a sigh with a crafty look on his eyes, "Mr. Feng, now I would like to welcome to America and are you ready to deal with the huge tax bill of over 10 million dollars?"

"Really ruthless!" James exclaimed shocked and bewildered, He knew that he would have to give tax in his excitement of earning money he forgot to research about the tax rate.

No wonder Americans unanimously believed that the IRS was stronger than the FBI; they were going to take a third of his earnings before he even got the money.

While looking at the smiling face of antony and his crafty look he couldn't help but sign internally and spoke "Mr. Anthony do you have any suggestion what should I do?"

"I have a good idea but you have know you may not like it," Anthony suggested with a smile.

"Please do, and I don't mind."

"If you just want to take the money and return to China after traveling, then the tax must be settled. But if you stay here, invest, consume, or buy real estate, in April next year, the IRS will likely deduct much less from your personal tax."

James asked, "I'm not familiar with U.S. tax laws. How is this calculated?"

"I'm not clear on the exact calculations. You'd need a private accountant for that. I can only advise that wealthy individuals investing over a million dollars and creating at least ten jobs can attract the attention of the Immigration Bureau. They might even expedite your immigration process."

"I'll think about it," James said thoughtfully.

Anthony nodded. "It's something worth serious consideration."

An hour's drive brought them to the city centre. James received a check in the reception room of the auction company.

Anthony approached with two goblets and a bottle of champagne. He poured two glasses leisurely and said, "Congratulations, Mr. Feng! Have you thought about where to go on vacation?"

James raised the check in his hand. "I'm afraid I need to figure out how to handle this check first."

Anthony smiled. "Let me recommend a bank for you. They will surely give you VIP treatment with that amount. Since you don't have an SSN (Social Security Number), opening an account by yourself would be very troublesome."

James was about to agree when a thought occurred to him. "You think I should stay and invest?"

This guy was clever!

Anthony raised his glass. "Why not? For the poor, this place may be hell, but for the rich, America is heaven!"

James had already considered this during the car ride. There wasn't much of a future for him back in China. He was still thinking about the man-made diamonds—this method of making money shouldn't be used on his fellow countrymen.

His country was good for common people who wants to be successful, but he heard some uncomfortable rumours about the successful one, so it even solidified his mind.

Moreover, in his country its would be difficult to gets personal protection like g*ns but here he can buy as many as he wants and is freer.

The United States was ideal—a developed economy with plenty of wealthy people who loved shiny stones and free country.

This place undoubtedly met the criteria of "rich and naive." So, James nodded.

Anthony clinked glasses with him, then stepped aside to make a phone call. He returned and told James to wait for further instructions.
