Chapter 15: Chapter 15
"Lucifer!" Chloe dove to his side. His eyes continued to stare unblinkingly toward the ceiling. What had happened? Kinley's gun – it had initially gone off when she tackled him to the ground. The shot must've hit Lucifer. Lucifer got shot.
Again.
Because of her.
Chloe shut her eyes in anguish. She couldn't see through her tears anyway.
"Oh, God," She heard Dan say from somewhere above her.
"Kinley's dead," Dan said and Chloe looked up at him through watery eyes.
"It looks like he bled out from his gut."
Chloe looked down at her hand as it trembled – blood coated her palm like she had leaned on wet red paint. When she had punched Kinley off of her with the glass shard, she must have stabbed him. She had taken a life… again. Somehow, she couldn't bring herself to care about the dead priest. The only life that had seemed to have ended that she cared about at the moment, was that of her love lying motionless in front of her.
"Is he…?" Dan knelt down next to Chloe, reaching out to place a comforting hand on to Chloe's shoulder. His gaze landed on Lucifer's form.
Chloe opened her mouth to reply, but nothing came out but a whimpering sob as she collapsed into Dan's side. He wrapped her up in a hug, tucking her head into his chest as he soothingly caressed her hair with his thumb. She sobbed into his chest.
GASP!
Dan and Chloe broke quickly apart at Lucifer gulping in a giant breath as he sat straight up in one quick motion.
"You're okay?!" Chloe couldn't believe it.
Lucifer looked down at the blackened bullet hole in the center of his chest and fished out a flattened bullet.
"I'm okay?" Lucifer couldn't quite believe it either. It didn't stop Chloe from rushing forward and enveloping him in a relieved hug. Lucifer let out a surprised oomph from the unexpected move.
"You're okay," Dan smiled.
"You're okay," a teary smile appeared on Chloe's lips as she came out of the hug, her hands never leaving Lucifer's arms.
Lucifer looked to Chloe with a relieved laugh.
"I'm okay," Lucifer smiled – the phrase seemed to be the only words any of them could form at the moment. He tossed the flattened bullet away before wrapping Chloe in another thankful hug.
"Let's get you guys off the floor," Dan moved to help both Lucifer and Chloe up after they finished hugging. Lucifer grabbed one of Dan's hands and Chloe the other as Dan helped them both up off of the floor.
Lucifer's gaze landed on Kinley flat on his stomach, arms handcuffed, dead on the ground, with a small pool of blood growing below him.
"That blood stain's going to be Hell to get out," Lucifer remarked.
"Not that I'm not grateful that you're not dead, Lucifer, but what the hell just happened?" Dan asked.
"Kinley's gun went off when I tackled him," Chloe said, "I thought I lost you, Lucifer."
"To be perfectly frank, I'm not entirely sure how I'm not dead either, Daniel," Lucifer replied.
"Do you think it has something to do with this?" Dan reached into his pocket and held out the coin between his thumb and forefinger, "I found it on Kinley when I was checking for a pulse."
"Doubtful, but I wouldn't rule anything out," Lucifer took the coin from Dan, "I think it'd be best if we put this someplace safe, eh?"
Chloe and Dan followed Lucifer as he headed over to his safe in his bedroom before placing the coin inside of it.
"So, what, the coin made you invulnerable? But why did it look like you were dead for a little bit?" Dan wondered.
Before Lucifer could form a response, Dan went on.
"Wait a minute. You looked like you did that time I rushed over here to stop Malcolm from killing you."
"When Malcolm did what now?" Chloe took a double-take at Dan.
"You were on the ground, completely still, eyes wide… I thought you were dead and then the next thing I knew, you let out a loud gasp and sat up, completely okay," Dan recalled, "Just like you did a minute ago."
"You're right," Lucifer replied, "But the Detective wasn't there then, but…"
Lucifer turned to look at her.
"You're here now."
"Lucifer, what are you talking about? What do I have to do with you not getting killed from being shot?" Chloe wasn't following.
"Well, this certainly lends way more credence to Amenadiel's theory," Lucifer said to himself.
"Lucifer, what are you talking about?" Chloe practically pleaded in question again.
Lucifer took Chloe's hand and led her over to the leather couch before they both took a seat. Dan trailed behind them but remained standing.
"I don't fully understand it, but I'm only vulnerable when you're near, Detective," Lucifer began.
"What, you mean, when you're not around me, you don't bleed?" Chloe asked, "That doesn't make any sense. How would that even be possible?"
"I'm an immortal, Chloe… not human, remember?" Lucifer said, "But for some reason, a few years ago, I discovered that whenever you're around, my mortality kicks in."
"But I'm here right now and you're okay," Chloe reached out to palm Lucifer's chest over the bullet hole.
"Amenadiel had a theory about that actually," Lucifer said again, "He thinks that we Angels control things like our vulnerability – that we self-actualize."
"What, you choose to bleed around Chloe?" Dan asked. Lucifer looked up, almost forgetting the other Detective was still in the room.
"Honestly, I think what it really means is that…" Lucifer looked back to Chloe and took her hand from his chest in his, "I choose to be vulnerable around you, to just be me, emotionally vulnerable and that manifested as physical vulnerability."
"What about now?" Chloe bit her lip and covered their joined hands with her other one.
"Now… now that we decided to be together, I guess I felt… invincible," Lucifer breathed with a smile.
"And you became invincible," Chloe nodded in understanding and squeezed their joined hands.
Lucifer nodded.
"Whatever it is, I'm just glad you're okay," Chloe pulled Lucifer to her lips for a chaste kiss.
"Me too," Lucifer agreed.
"I'm glad you're all right too, Lucifer," Dan said, "But I think it's about time we wrap things up with Kinley… I sense a LOT of paperwork in our future."
Dan looked over to Kinley's body and Lucifer and Chloe followed his gaze.
"Yeah, you're right," Chloe stood up, "We should probably take care of everything and wrap up this case before we… get into anything else."
"Agreed," Lucifer stood too, "We should probably get a hold of Maze and tell her she can call off her search."
"What about the demons?" Dan asked, "Do they just pop back to Hell now that Kinley's dead?"
"No… they don't," Lucifer replied as if he was realizing something he didn't wish to share, "It might be prudent for Mazikeen to shift her hunt on to Dromos and Squee."
"Excuse me, Detective," Lucifer made a move to go and do as he had said. He went in search for his phone before making himself scarce to call Maze, leaving Chloe and Dan to get started on doing what they needed to do to wrap up the case with Kinley.
Maze stuffed the last bit of donut into her mouth as she clicked on one of the two abandoned warehouses she thought Kinley would be holed up in. She just had to check one more thing to narrow down her search. Sensing eyes on her, Maze darted her gaze up to the other occupant in the room, only to find the forensic scientist staring at her with her mouth agape.
"What?" Maze asked and wiped her mouth with her thumb. Did she have frosting on her face or something?
"You just ate that entire box of donuts in like two minutes," Ella said.
"Yeah and? They were good," Maze didn't see what the big deal was.
"Did you just swallow them whole?" Ella picked up the empty box and flipped it over, shaking it slightly. Crumbs fell to the counter. She'd worry about cleaning that up later.
When she went over to get her and Maze some breakfast from the station's coffee nook, she thought the whole box of two dozen donuts would be enough to split between the two of them. She had set the box of donuts next to the demon, taking one out for herself, while she went to check on something for the case. Not two minutes later, she had finished what she was doing and had almost finished her one donut and walked back over to the donut box to get another, only to find it empty.
"No… I chewed 'em," Maze looked at Ella like she was crazy. As a demon, she could consume more calories than the average human of her size and do so much quicker than what would be deemed "normal."
"Well… most of them," Maze amended. She looked back to her computer screen, "Don't you think we have more important things to focus on, Ellen?"
Ella sighed. Maybe one day, Maze would call her by her actual name.
Just as she turned to venture back out to the break room to see if maybe she'd find something from the vending machine for herself, both her and Maze's phones went off at the same time.
"It's Lucifer."
"It's Chloe."
Maze and Ella said at the same time before answering their respective calls.
"Kinley's dead?!" they both exclaimed at the same time in response to their respective callers.
"I literally was just about to go after him. I finally narrowed down where I could find him," Maze berated herself. She had to step up her game. She was getting too slow.
"You killed him?" Ella turned back around, "No, I'm sure it was self-defense."
"Decker got to kill the priest?" Maze said at the same time Ella was reassuring Chloe on her call, "Lucky."
"Tracking down those two demons are definitely the priority now," Ella agreed with Chloe.
"On it," Maze hung up and swiftly pocketed her phone.
"I'm sure Maze will track them down in no time," Ella said and after a brief pause, she continued, "Right… I'll see you and Dan soon then."
Ella hung up.
"You up to speed?" Maze raised an expectant scarred brow.
"Yeah, Kinley showed up at the penthouse and tried to kill Chloe. I guess he really did figure out that prophecy," Ella replied, "But they fought and Chloe killed him. She and Dan are headed over here to transport the body and fill out all the paperwork to wrap up the case."
"And Lucifer just asked me to track down the two demons that were working with Kinley," Maze replied, "Something tells me they'll still be at the abandoned warehouse where I figure Kinley was holed up. I'm going to head over there now. You want in on the action?"
"I should probably stay here," Ella said, "Something tells me that I don't want to get in the middle of a literal demon fight."
"Suit yourself," Maze shrugged and started for the door but stopped just short of it before turning around, "Oh, and Ella? Thanks for the breakfast. We should do it again some time."
With that, Maze left the lab and a smiling Latina forensic scientist.
Chloe looked down at her phone lost in thought. This case turned out to be quite the whirlwind. So many truths came to light, including the biggest truth she simply didn't want to see – she loved Lucifer Morningstar. Sure, one could argue that the biggest truth that came to light during this case was her discovery that Lucifer is indeed the actual Devil. But he had been telling her that for years, hadn't he? No, the biggest truth was she loved him.
And she had almost lost him – just when they decided to finally be together.
She closed her eyes at that thought.
Lucifer was okay. He was just in the other room phoning Maze. She and Dan just had to start the process of paperwork of the case to formally wrap it up and it would all be over… and she and Lucifer could finally start their relationsh-
"Hey, Chlo… you okay?" Dan's voice broke through her thoughts.
"Yeah. I'm good," Chloe looked up and gave him a small, reassuring smile. She let out a long exhale, "I'm just ready to close this case."
"You and me both," Dan agreed and looked over to Kinley's body with a shake of his head, "I still can't believe everything this guy did to try to get Lucifer to go back to Hell… It's crazy."
"I'm afraid what he tried to do doesn't even crack the top ten for me, Daniel," Lucifer re-joined the two of them.
"You mean to tell me that a kidnapping and using literal demons from Hell isn't the worst thing someone tried to do to you?" Dan found that hard to believe.
"A topic we can perhaps discuss at our next get-together if you like, Daniel," Lucifer answered the detective, gesturing at him with his palm up.
"What was the worst thing?" Chloe was afraid to ask, but did anyway.
Lucifer stepped up closer to Chloe and took her hand, entwining their fingers once again as he gave her hand a small squeeze, "I'll tell you later, Detective."
They exchanged sad smiles – the look in Chloe's eyes told him that she would be holding him to that promise.
"You know, there's still one thing about all this that still hasn't clicked for me," Dan turned their attention back to him.
"What?" Lucifer asked.
"That spell book we found. The one that our victim used and then Kinley," Dan gestured to the body on the floor, "How did that factor in?"
"Come, Daniel… even you can figure out it was a summoning spell," Lucifer chided, "Even Miss Lopez told us about it. You really need to pay better attention."
Dan returned Lucifer's comment with a deadpan glare, "I know that, Lucifer, but I just thought that that specific summoning spell meant something more."
"You watch too much television, Daniel," Lucifer smirked, "Regardless, we wouldn't know what else the summoning spell entailed unless we could see the specific spell and it's tucked away in Miss Lopez's lab."
"I uh… Actually, I took a picture of it," Dan admitted as he dug for his phone in his pocket.
"You had a picture of the spell and didn't say anything? Why?" Chloe asked.
"I took a picture on a whim," Dan shrugged, "You didn't know about the supernatural stuff quite yet and I'm new to it all. I wasn't sure if it'd be important."
"Let's see it then," Lucifer made a "hand it over" gesture toward the phone in Dan's hand.
Dan brought the picture of the spell up and handed his phone over to the Devil.
Chloe and Dan carefully watched Lucifer's expression as he took a look at the picture of the summoning spell. Lucifer used his forefinger and thumb to zoom in on the photograph and tilted Dan's phone in a couple directions to get a better look. His lips moved as he mouthed some of the words to the spell as he read them. Wordlessly, he handed Dan's phone back to him.
"So?" Dan and Chloe prompted.
"I think we should consult Amenadiel," was all Lucifer said before he took out his own phone and texted his brother.
Lucifer 11:38am: Incoming prayer…
"Why do we need to consult your brother?" Chloe started to sound a little worried, "Is it- Is the spell something worse than we thought?"
"You have no idea what the spell says, do you?" Dan guessed.
Lucifer ignored Dan, effectively answering both Chloe and Dan's questions. He brought his palms together and closed his eyes, sending Amenadiel a prayer requesting his counsel.
"Is Amenadiel okay?" Trixie asked from her seat next to the Angel. She leaned forward on to Amenadiel's lap and looked up at him. He was staring blankly ahead, as if he were in a trance. The young girl had just re-joined Linda and Amenadiel in the living room after Linda had asked her to give them privacy for a few moments.
"He will be," Linda assured her, though she didn't look too sure of her claims herself, "At least, I hope he will be."
"Does this have anything to do with you telling him you're pregnant?" Trixie turned back to look up at Linda who had come up to stand in front of the couch.
Linda looked down at Trixie, her mouth agape and her eyes bugged out.
"Sorry… I didn't mean to eavesdrop," Trixie at least had the decency to look sheepish. When Linda had asked her to give her and Amenadiel some privacy, Trixie had a feeling that it was "grown-up problems," but she was still curious to find out what was going on. She had learned all about how to eavesdrop covertly from the best demon there ever was, after all. When else was she going to get a chance to put those skills to use?
Linda let out a sigh.
"I think this has everything to do with it," Linda finally answered. She gestured for Trixie to get up, "Let's give Amenadiel a minute to gather his thoughts. He's been like this ever since I told him."
Trixie scooted off the couch to follow Linda out of the room, but before they could fully leave Amenadiel by himself, Trixie stopped Linda by a slight tug on her arm – causing her to look down at her.
"If it makes you feel any better, I think you're gonna be a great mom," Trixie told her.
"Thank you, Trixie," Linda looked touched, "That means a lot."
With that, the two ladies left Amenadiel still sat on Linda's sofa lost in his thoughts.
A father.
Him… Amenadiel.
He was going to be a father. There was going to be a being brought into this universe that he helped create. Never in all of his eons did he think this would ever happen. When he had heard that Linda needed to talk to him about something, never in his wildest dreams did he think that she was going to tell him he was going to be a father. He didn't think it was even possible.
Clearly this was the result of his mortal time on Earth. He was always an advocate of Divinity and Humanity to never mix – now, this child would be the ultimate mixture of the two. He was sure Lucifer would enjoy rubbing the irony in his face. It was a wonder that he hadn't already done so. It was a testament to Linda's influence on his brother no doubt. She really was a remarkable human being.
And now… they were going to be parents!
He had no doubt in his mind that Dr. Linda Martin would be a great mom. But would he be a great dad? His own Father was… well, distant to say the least. He would be a different kind of father. He would be present. He had been trying to think of a reason to stay on Earth. It had become more of a home to him than Heaven. He had to admit it. He could think of no better reason to stay than to be a dad.
And if he still had any doubts he'd make a good dad, he had Linda to guide him. There was no better guide.
A full-toothed grin slowly formed across his lips.
He couldn't wait for this child to be born.
He would teach his child everything.
Amenadiel blinked out of his thoughts and looked around the room, only to find that he was alone. When had Linda left the room?
His reaction to the baby news probably left something to be desired. As he stood up to go in search of Linda, Amenadiel felt his phone buzz in his pocket.
He took it out to see a text from Lucifer: "Incoming prayer…"
"What?" Amenadiel was confused before he could feel his brother's prayer permeate his mind.
"Hello, Brother dear. Enjoy your break with the good doctor? I'm in need of that book-nerdy brain of yours. Daniel took a photograph of the spell our victim used to summon the demons – it seems to be a bit more involved than I thought. I need to make sure I'm interpreting it correctly. If you would be so kind, please bring your feathery arse back to the penthouse as soon as possible. Like, now," Lucifer's prayer came through loud and clear in Amenadiel's head, and as an afterthought, he heard, "Thank you… Amen."
"More involved?" Amenadiel muttered to himself. He let out a sigh and walked off in search of Linda. He better tell her he was leaving. The last thing he'd want would be for Linda to find him gone after the baby news.
Lucifer opened his eyes to be greeted to the sight of Dan and Chloe looking at him with twin confused looks.
"What?" Lucifer asked.
"What was that?" Dan gestured at Lucifer's whole self.
"I told you that I thought we should consult Amenadiel about the summoning spell," Lucifer didn't understand where their confusion was coming from, "As much as I loathe to admit, he's actually really good when it comes to all the book stuff."
"No, what was the-?" Dan mimicked Lucifer's previous prayer stance.
"Oh, I just prayed to Amenadiel," Lucifer explained with a wave of his hand, "He should be on his way."
"You can just send your thoughts like that?" Dan looked impressed and yet a little wary of the idea, "Can you do that to anybody?"
"Angels can pray to one another," Lucifer put Dan's mind at ease, "Sometimes it's quicker and more reliable than a text."
Dan and Chloe exchanged glances. You learned something new every day.
"Can humans pray to you?" Chloe asked and after a brief pause, she licked her lips and cautiously asked, "Do they?"
"When it comes to prayer, it's all about intent and faith," Lucifer began, "Luckily, there aren't too many humans that have faith in the Devil. Even those Satanists don't truly believe I exist – their prayers wouldn't reach me. Of which I'm actually grateful."
There was an awkward beat of silence amongst the three of them before Lucifer cleared his throat.
"Amenadiel should've been here by now," Lucifer adjusted his suit jacket, "I think I'll just go to him instead. If you don't mind, Daniel, I'll take your phone so I can show him the spell."
Lucifer made a "gimme" motion with his hand. Dan quickly handed his phone back to Lucifer.
"Right, well, we really should get started on wrapping up the case," Dan gestured back to Kinley's body behind them. Blood continued to slowly seep out below him.
Lucifer made a disgusted face, "It's going to be Hell to get that bloodstain out of my floor."
Lucifer looked to Chloe and started to walk backwards towards the elevator, "See you later?"
"See you later," Chloe agreed.
With that, Lucifer entered his elevator and after the doors closed, Chloe and Dan made their way over to Kinley's body.
"I have no idea what we're gonna be able to put in the report and not sound crazy," Dan had his hands on his lips as he looked down at the body.
"We'll figure something out," Chloe said as she stared at the still slowly-growing blood pool; the puddle almost reached her feet.
"Maybe we should have Lucifer help us with our phrasing," Dan tugged up on his pantlegs before he knelt down on his haunches by Kinley's body, "Dude's an expert at telling the truth without saying the whole truth."
"You're not wrong," Chloe agreed and joined Dan on the floor, resting on her own haunches.
Chloe let out a breath and took out her phone, letting it hang loosely from between her fingertips.
"I know I have to take photos for the report, but…"
"I know," Dan understood what she meant without her even having to say anything. Their report was going to be difficult enough with all the Celestial happenings. But it was important to stick to procedure as much as they could. All of which he communicated back to Chloe with a single look.
Silently, Chloe agreed and opened up the camera app on her phone to start taking pictures of Kinley's body. Just as her thumb hovered above the circle to snap a photo of Kinley's bloody face, his eyes snapped open.
Chloe let out an indignant squawk of surprise, landing on her butt, phone in hand still stuck out in front of her in shock. In her surprise, she effectively knocked Dan back with her.
Kinley, if it was Kinley, jerked his head to stare directly at the two of them, eyes wide in a menacing glare, accentuated by his bushy eyebrows – his mouth in a thin, unfeeling line, blood slowly drying around it in his beard. In one swift move, he broke the handcuffs behind his back. He shot one hand out, the broken silver chain of the cuffs dangled from his wrist as he snatched Chloe's phone from her hand before crushing it in his grip – screen cracked and frame bent, before letting go. Her phone dropped into the blood pool, broken and useless.
What. The. Hell.
