Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Azog
The explosion site was a complete mess, with rubble scattered everywhere. Black blood dripped from shattered stone, and fragments of Warg and Orc bodies were strewn about like the aftermath of a terrible storm.
Kael walked leisurely forward, his wand never stopping as he easily dispatched the struggling Orcs and Wargs clinging to life. When he reached the Orc leader, seeing that the creature had only lost an arm and a leg, he raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"Quite resilient, still not dead?"
"Wizard, you have no idea who you're opposing!" the Orc leader said with fear in his eyes, threatening hoarsely. "Our master possesses boundless power. He is the lord of darkness, and the entire world will grovel at his feet, while you are powerless to stop it."
"Your master? Are you talking about that Sauron hiding in Dol Guldur?" Kael asked mockingly with a cold laugh.
But before the Orc could say anything more, the very Morgul arrow that had nearly struck Kael instantly pierced through the creature's head, killing him with one shot.
Having finished off the Orc leader, Kael finally breathed a sigh of relief, not bothering with the remaining surviving Orcs and Wargs that fled in terror.
"Let me see where Gandalf and the others have gotten to," Kael muttered as he took out the Palantír.
"Hmm? What's this situation?" Kael widened his eyes and leaned close to the crystal ball. "How is there still another Orc troop? They've chased them all the way to a cliff?"
Looking at Gandalf and the others being cornered on the cliff by the pursuing Orcs, then at the Orc leader riding a white Warg, Kael's gaze fell on this particular creature. Seeing the iron claw attached to his severed hand, then looking at Thorin's hateful expression, the identity was obvious.
"Could this be the Defiler—Azog? The leader of the Orcs?"
Gandalf in the crystal seemed to sense something and shouted in his direction, "Kael, we need your help!"
Kael couldn't hear Gandalf's voice, but he knew he was calling for help. He shook his head somewhat helplessly.
Gandalf really had it tough—clearly being a Maia with demigod-level power, yet having his strength restricted, unable to use overly powerful magic. Kael had quietly asked Gandalf about this before, and in Gandalf's veiled words, they—the wizards—were not allowed to use too much magic, but needed to guide rather than replace the free peoples of Middle-earth, to avoid destroying "free will."
To this, Kael could only complain about the Valar who made these rules—no different from the leaders in his previous life, wanting subordinates to complete tasks well while imposing a bunch of restrictions and regulations.
No wonder Gandalf preferred to hit people with his staff rather than use it for spellcasting, saving himself from having to worry about too many considerations when using magic.
Shaking off his scattered thoughts, Kael hurried toward Gandalf and the others. By now they had been forced to hide in trees. If he didn't go soon, they'd probably have to fly away on giant eagles.
At this moment, on the peak of the Misty Mountains, the two enemies Thorin and Azog met with particular animosity.
Thorin was shocked that Azog was still alive. And Azog harbored resentment for having his arm severed, viewing Thorin as his mortal enemy, vowing to kill him.
After all, Thorin Oakenshield's name came from when Thorin had successfully cut off one of Azog's arms using an oak branch as a shield. For this, Azog had previously put out a bounty for Thorin's head. Now he even personally led Warg riders in pursuit, vowing to kill Thorin in the Misty Mountains.
"Look what I smell—the scent of fear," Azog mocked, looking at Thorin hiding in the tree. "Your father had that same smell, Thorin, son of Thráin."
"Leave him for me, kill all the others!"
With Azog's command, all the Wargs began climbing and biting at the trees. The Orcs seemed to enjoy the struggle before death, so instead of using arrows to shoot them down, they let the Wargs gradually close in until the dwarves fell into despair and fear.
The dwarves looked at the giant wolves with bared fangs below, using their weapons to fend them off while shouting loudly.
"Think of something quick! I don't want to end up in these giant wolves' bellies and then be... expelled!"
"Where's Kael? When will he come?"
"If only Kael were here, he could just throw that crying plant over, and we wouldn't have all this trouble!"
"Don't think about it. Kael has thousands of Orcs and Wargs to deal with—how could he shake them off so easily?"
Bilbo hugged the tree trunk tightly to avoid being shaken down by the giant wolves, while asking Gandalf hopefully, "Gandalf, do you know when Kael will come?"
Gandalf shook his head. "I can't guarantee that. After all, he's facing thousands of Orcs and Wargs—dealing with them is no easy task. Besides, we can't always depend on Kael for everything. That's not good for any of you or for Kael himself."
As he spoke, he noticed a moth on the tree, and his eyes immediately lit up. "However, if there's enough time, we might be able to call some friends for help."
He caught the moth, whispered to it in his palm, then released it to fly away.
After enjoying their cat-and-mouse game, the Orcs finally lost patience and ordered the Wargs to push down the pine trees. Under the Wargs' tremendous force and gnawing, the pine trees fell one by one.
The people in the trees were forced to jump to other trees to buy time. When everyone had gathered on the last pine tree, it swayed precariously, in danger of falling at any moment.
Facing the Wargs closing in step by step below, everyone found themselves in a desperate situation.
Gandalf plucked a pinecone, ignited it with flames using his staff, and threw it to the ground. The flames quickly spread to the fallen pine trees, creating a roaring fire. Such rapid flames were obviously due to Gandalf using magic.
The flames temporarily forced the Wargs to retreat, preserving the last pine tree they were on. But without giving everyone a chance to breathe, the overburdened pine tree, to everyone's horror, was uprooted and fell toward the cliff.
Everyone hung over the cliff, in danger of falling at any moment.
To buy his companions more time, Thorin came down from the tree, choosing to duel Azog once again. But this time Thorin couldn't repeat his previous victory—he was easily defeated by Azog and severely wounded.
Just as Thorin was about to be killed by Azog, Bilbo wildly swung Sting, stopping Azog's final blow. Furious at being interrupted from killing his mortal enemy, Azog was filled with rage and killing intent, knocking away Bilbo's sword with one strike of his mace.
"Kill him!" Azog commanded his giant Warg mount, then continued trying to kill Thorin.
"Reducto!" A brilliant spell struck the Warg lunging at Bilbo.
The Warg was instantly torn into countless fragments.
Bilbo was startled, then showed delight: "Kael!"
Seeing his mount torn apart, Azog was shocked by this sudden turn of events. The next second, his keen sense of danger instantly made him react, grabbing a subordinate to shield himself.
Kael's magic followed immediately, striking the Orc in front of him. The body instantly split into pieces, black blood splattering all over Azog.
