Chapter 20: Reunion
As evening approached, a soft chime echoed at the front door.
"Master has arrived. Unlocking the door."
The household robot responded immediately, and the door slid open smoothly. Wang Yanfei's parents stepped inside.
His father, Wang Feng, as always, wore a crisp white shirt paired with dark gray trousers. Tall and lean, his sharp features carried a natural sternness, though a warm smile always softened his expression when he saw his family. His mother, Li Hui, was dressed in a simple, elegant light blue dress, her long hair neatly tied into a professional bun. Time had etched both kindness and resilience onto her face.
"Yanfei!"
Li Hui was the first to spot her son lounging on the sofa, and her smile widened instantly. She strode over quickly and patted his shoulder. "Why didn't you let us know you had arrived?"
Wang Feng was more composed. He handed a folder to the household robot for processing before approaching at a steady pace. His voice carried a hint of seriousness, though his concern was evident. "It's been half a month. You look like you're doing well in District Seven."
Scratching his head, Wang Yanfei chuckled sheepishly. "Forgot to send a message. I ended up spending time playing with Xiaoxiao as soon as I got here."
At that moment, Xiaoxiao peeked her head out from upstairs and interjected, "Playing? Brother, you mean getting beaten by me!" Her eyes sparkled mischievously, clearly proud of her earlier victory.
She had spoken casually, but as soon as the words left her mouth, she felt both her parents' gazes lock onto her.
Wang Feng set down his chopsticks, his expression serious. "What exactly happened earlier?"
Realizing she had just exposed herself, Xiaoxiao quickly waved her hands dismissively. "Nothing! We were just messing around. My electromagnetic resonance staff isn't that powerful. Brother just wasn't expecting it, so—" She trailed off, then immediately shook her head as if trying to retract her words. "Anyway, it's no big deal. Don't worry about it!"
Li Hui narrowed her eyes and turned to her son. "Yanfei, explain."
Seeing Xiaoxiao stumble over her words, Wang Yanfei sighed. He didn't want to worry his parents, so he kept his tone casual. "Really, it's nothing. We were just fooling around. Her gadget is interesting, but it's not that serious."
Wang Feng put his chopsticks down. His tone was low. "Not serious? If it weren't serious, she wouldn't have been able to hit you hard enough for it to matter. What kind of experiment were you two conducting?"
Li Hui's expression darkened with concern. "Yanfei, don't try to brush this off. If anything is wrong, you need to tell us."
Though their concern was a bit overwhelming, warmth filled Wang Yanfei's heart. He waved a hand dismissively, hoping to reassure them. "I really am fine. Actually, this turned out to be a good thing—I had a breakthrough with Jade Force because of it. My recovery rate is great, so even small injuries heal quickly."
Li Hui still wasn't convinced. "No. You're getting a full scan. Xiaoxiao, don't use that thing recklessly again."
Xiaoxiao pouted. "I said it's fine…" She lowered her head, stuffing her mouth with food to avoid further questions.
-------
Even after dinner, Wang Feng and Li Hui still weren't fully reassured.
Unable to argue, Wang Yanfei was ultimately pushed into the household medical bay. It was a compact but highly advanced unit designed for routine health checks—small enough for home use but equipped with professional-grade diagnostics. He sighed and sat down as Li Hui activated the scan.
"Scanning initiated. Please remain still."
The machine's robotic arms extended, swiftly performing a full-body scan. Soft blue lights flickered over his skin as the display processed real-time imaging.
Soon, a gentle ding signaled the scan's completion.
"Scan complete. Generating report."
A detailed image of his skeletal structure appeared on the screen.
His parents leaned in, and Li Hui's face immediately hardened. "What is that?"
A faint fracture was visible in his arm—but what caught their attention was the subtle jade-like glow radiating from the damaged area, sharply contrasting with the rest of his bones.
"It's clearly a fracture," Wang Feng stated, his gaze locked onto the image. He turned to his son, his brows furrowing. "Explain. Now."
Wang Yanfei scratched the back of his head with an awkward grin. "Uh… well, Xiaoxiao's staff was a bit stronger than I expected. She didn't mean to, and I didn't think it would actually…"
"Xiaoxiao's staff?" Li Hui's face darkened as she turned to her daughter. "You hit your brother with that resonance staff? Who told you to do that?"
Xiaoxiao shrank slightly under the intensity of her mother's gaze. "How was I supposed to know this would happen?! Brother said he was strong enough and told me to try it—"
"Try it?" Li Hui let out a cold laugh. "So you just swung a lab prototype at your brother for fun? Do you think this is a testing facility?"
"Mom, I really am fine," Wang Yanfei quickly intervened. "Actually, this turned out to be beneficial. Jade Force seems to have penetrated into my bones because of the impact. I could feel it repairing itself, and look—" He pointed to the glowing fracture on the screen. "See? The bone is changing color. It's a good thing."
"Even if it's a good thing, that doesn't mean you should be reckless," Li Hui shot him a stern look. "Next time, I will lock up all of Xiaoxiao's gadgets."
"Mom, I'm sorry!" Xiaoxiao apologized hastily, though a hint of stubborn defiance remained in her eyes, as if silently blaming her brother for not stopping her sooner.
Wang Feng exhaled and held out his hand. "Xiaoxiao, bring me the staff."
Grumbling under her breath, Xiaoxiao reluctantly handed over the electromagnetic resonance staff. Wang Feng immediately turned to the household robot. "Store this away. Lock it. No one touches it without our authorization."
"Understood, Master."
The robot took the staff and placed it into a secure storage unit. Once the locker door sealed, it confirmed:
"Item stored. Access restricted to authorized personnel only."
Xiaoxiao mumbled under her breath, "It's not all my fault…"
"Are you still talking back?" Li Hui shot her a sharp glance, and Xiaoxiao immediately shut her mouth.
Seeing the tension, Wang Yanfei quickly changed the subject. "Alright, alright, it's really not a big deal. With my Jade Force, even a fracture heals faster than normal."
Li Hui crossed her arms. "That doesn't mean you can be reckless." But her tone softened slightly.
--------
Later that night, lying in bed, Wang Yanfei's mind kept circling back to that staff. He knew that if he could control the right level of impact, it could become the perfect tool for training Jade Bone.
When the house had finally gone quiet, he slipped out of bed, carefully making his way downstairs.
The storage unit was locked, but the household robot was currently busy cleaning. Quietly, he used his wristband to simulate his father's fingerprint—easily bypassing the security lock. With a soft click, the compartment opened.
Grinning, he reached in and retrieved the staff.
"Sorry, Xiaoxiao," he muttered under his breath, gripping the weapon tightly. "I'll be borrowing this for a while."
With that, he carefully hid the staff away, a firm plan already forming in his mind.
