Idol Turned Actor

Chapter 7: Past Shadows

Chapter 7:

Minho's alarm buzzed early, pulling him from a restless sleep. As he rubbed the exhaustion from his eyes, the events of the previous day replayed in his mind—the first scenes, Jaehyun's jabs, Yuna's unexpected kindness.

He glanced at the script on his desk, its pages worn from hours of study. Today was another critical filming day, and his scenes would only get more challenging.

[Daily Goal: Filming Performance Evaluation]

Objective: Deliver a performance rated at least A- or higher in today's scenes. Reward: +2 Skill Points, Access to Advanced Scene Breakdown Tool.

Minho groaned. "A-? You really don't believe in starting small, do you?"

"Challenge is the foundation of growth," the system replied. "If you desire mediocrity, I suggest abandoning this endeavor now."

"Yeah, yeah, I get it," he muttered, dragging himself to his feet.

Unfinished Business

As Minho prepared for the day, an unexpected text lit up his phone.

From: Eunwoo

Are you free tonight?

Minho's chest tightened. Eunwoo—his former manager. In his past life, Eunwoo had been a steadfast ally, the one person who stood by him even after the scandal broke.

But the memory of their last encounter resurfaced, sharp and painful:

"Minho, stop pushing me away! I'm trying to help you!"

"You can't help me! No one can!"

Minho swallowed hard. This Eunwoo didn't know any of that. To him, Minho was just a struggling actor with a tiny spark of potential.

After a moment's hesitation, Minho replied:

Let's meet after filming.

On Set: A Test of Resolve

The production team had moved to a larger soundstage for today's scenes. The centerpiece was a recreation of an art gallery, where Seo Jiho would confront an arrogant curator after overhearing a conversation mocking his work.

The director gathered the cast, his intense gaze sweeping over them. "This scene needs to sizzle with tension," he said. "Jiho is desperate, humiliated, but he refuses to back down. I need that desperation to be real."

Minho nodded, his grip tightening on the script. The stakes were high—not just for Jiho, but for himself.

As they set up, Jaehyun approached, his demeanor as smug as ever. "You've got the spotlight today," he said. "Better not choke."

Minho forced a calm smile. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."

"Action!"

The scene began with Minho standing in front of a row of paintings, his character's expression a mix of hope and apprehension. In the background, the curator and a group of guests whispered to one another, their laughter cutting through the air like knives.

Minho turned, his body stiffening as he caught snippets of their conversation.

"Did he really think this was good enough?"

"I've seen better work from high school students."

He stepped forward, his face a storm of emotions. "Excuse me," he said, his voice trembling with restrained anger.

The curator turned, an amused smile playing on his lips. "Ah, Jiho. I didn't see you there. Can I help you with something?"

Minho hesitated, letting the silence stretch as the humiliation sank in. Then, he drew himself up, his voice sharp. "You're mocking my work behind my back, and now you're pretending to be polite? Don't bother."

The curator's smile didn't waver. "Art is subjective, Jiho. If you can't handle criticism, perhaps you're in the wrong field."

The words hit like a slap, but Minho didn't flinch. Instead, he stepped closer, his voice low and steady. "You can mock me all you want, but don't you dare dismiss the years I've poured into this. My work is more than just paint on a canvas—it's my soul. And I won't let someone like you reduce it to a joke."

The room fell silent, the tension palpable.

"Cut!" the director called.

Minho released a shaky breath, his heart pounding. He glanced at the director, who studied him for a long moment before nodding. "Good work. Let's run it one more time, but keep that fire."

Minho nodded, a small spark of pride igniting in his chest.

A Chance Encounter

After filming wrapped, Minho left the set, his mind buzzing with the day's events. As he walked to the nearby café where he was supposed to meet Eunwoo, a voice called out behind him.

"Hyunjae-ssi!"

He turned to see Yuna hurrying toward him, her scarf trailing in the wind.

"Heading somewhere?" she asked, slightly out of breath.

"Just meeting someone," he said. "What about you?"

"I wanted to say good job today," she said, her eyes bright. "That scene in the gallery… you really brought Jiho to life."

Minho smiled, her praise warming him. "Thanks. It wasn't easy."

"You made it look effortless," she said, then hesitated. "Anyway, I'll let you go. See you tomorrow!"

As she walked away, Minho couldn't help but feel a strange sense of connection. Yuna's encouragement, though small, felt genuine.

A Ghost from the Past

The café was quiet when Minho arrived. Eunwoo was already seated by the window, a cup of coffee in hand.

As Minho approached, Eunwoo looked up, his face breaking into a familiar grin. "Hyunjae! It's good to see you."

Minho forced a smile, sitting across from him. "It's been a while."

Eunwoo nodded, studying him carefully. "I've been hearing things. People are talking about you—you're making waves on this drama."

Minho shrugged. "It's early days."

Eunwoo leaned forward, his expression serious. "Look, I know you've got potential. But this industry… it's brutal. You need someone who can watch your back, someone who believes in you."

The words struck a chord in Minho. He remembered how fiercely Eunwoo had defended him during his darkest days, how he'd fought to salvage Minho's reputation even when it seemed hopeless.

"I appreciate it," Minho said quietly. "But I'm not sure I'm ready to trust anyone yet."

Eunwoo frowned but didn't push. "Fair enough. Just remember, you don't have to do this alone."

As they parted ways, Minho felt a flicker of something he hadn't felt in years: hope. Maybe, just maybe, he could rebuild not just his career, but the relationships he had once taken for granted.

A Turning Point

That night, as Minho lay in bed, the system chimed again.

[Task Complete: Filming Performance Evaluation]

Rating: A-

Reward: +2 Skill Points, Access to Advanced Scene Breakdown Tool

Minho opened the new tool, curiosity piqued. A detailed breakdown of the gallery scene appeared, highlighting his strengths and areas for improvement.

Strengths: Emotional delivery, strong stage presence.

Weaknesses: Subtlety in expression, pacing of dialogue.

He studied the notes carefully, already planning how to refine his performance for the next scene.

With every scene, every task, and every encounter, Minho felt himself growing—not just as an actor, but as a person. The shadows of his past still lingered, but for the first time, he believed he could outrun them.

And this time, he wouldn't let anything—or anyone—hold him back.
