Chapter 2 - Flyer
What on earth is she saying?
“We haven’t exchanged phone numbers, though…? We don’t have that kind of relationship anyway—where we call each other, that is. Did you hit your head or something?
“Um, if you’re not feeling well, I can take you to the infirmary…?”
“Can you stop treating me like a weirdo…? Kimi-kun, did you lie to me yesterday?”
“Lie to you…?”
I’ve never had a conversation with Shiratori where I would need to lie. Although we are in the same class, we’ve only had a few short conversations here and there, and I never had a reason to lie to her.
“Yesterday, you said that the higher the wage, the better. But now that you say you didn’t receive a phone call, that means you are lying to me.”
“What are you talking about…?”
“What am I talking about? You made a big deal out of it yesterday… In that case, why don’t you tell me the hourly wage you desire?”
“The hourly wage I want…? If possible, around 2,000 yen.”
“2,000 yen!?”
Shiratori seemed surprised. Perhaps asking for a 2,000 yen hourly wage for a high school part-time job was too greedy.
…But I was asked about my desired hourly wage, so it should be fine to express my ideal, right?
“Isn’t—isn’t that way too cheap!? Well, that’s fine….”
“Cheap? Fine?”
A 2,000 yen hourly wage is considered cheap…?
Just as I was about to refute her words, I calmed my momentarily rebellious thoughts and realised that the person I’m talking to is Shiratori.
It’s only natural for her to have a different sense of money.
…But what does she mean by saying it’s fine?
“Um, it’s nothing… Well then, that’s all.”
Shiratori casually returned to her seat without saying anything further… What was that all about?
Ren, who seemed to have been observing the situation, rushed to my seat and spoke up excitedly.
“Y-You were talking to Shiratori, right!?”
“Yeah, I was.”
“See! I told you she was watching you! Whether she’s interested in you or not!”
For some reason, Ren made a triumphant gesture, his lips rising into a happy smile.
…Certainly, considering yesterday’s encounter and today’s conversation, Ren’s speculation might be correct.
“But I couldn’t understand the content of the conversation.”
“You don’t know Japanese, now?”
Ryou muttered and placed his hand on my shoulder, shaking his head sympathetically. I lightly nudged his abdomen with my elbow.
“Ouch… I just thought I’d explain the Japanese meaning since you said you couldn’t understand the conversation…”
“It’s not that I can’t understand Japanese. I didn’t know what she was talking about.”
Oh well, let’s just ask her directly.
“Well, why not ask her directly? For now, let’s observe the situation, and if nothing changes, we’ll just leave it at that. If something changes, I’ll try asking Shiratori directly.”
“That’s a great idea!”
“No, that’s just common sense.”
The day went by without any further peculiarities, and I went to work after school and returned home as usual, but…
“Another flyer?”
Once again, there was a flyer in the mailbox. I grabbed it and checked its contents.
If it’s another one like yesterday, I’ll tear it up and throw it away…
“Hourly wage: 2,000 yen. Live-in option available. Three meals and a private room included. High school students and above. A work environment where you can easily ask questions even if the job is difficult! Phone number: XXX-XXXX-XXXX”
…That actually sounds pretty good. (TL: He can’t even connect the dots….)
There are no excessive exclamation marks like yesterday, the hourly wage of 2,000 yen seems realistic, and on top of that, it offers live-in accommodation with three meals. It’s almost too good to be true.
The flyer’s design is also different from yesterday’s flashy gold decoration. It uses white and blue text, with a typical house in the background. Checking the location, it doesn’t seem too far from here.
…But one thing bothers me: the job description is not mentioned anywhere.
“…Well, let’s give them a call anyway.”
Phone calls to inquire about part-time jobs from flyers are new to me, but an hourly wage of 2,000 yen… Maybe my senses have been numbed due to yesterday’s flyer, but this one actually seems legitimate.
The lack of a job description might be a mistake, but I should confirm that along with them when I get home.
Once I arrived home, I immediately dialled the phone number I had written down.
“Hello?”
The voice on the other end of the phone sounded like that of a young woman… or so it seemed.
I impulsively made the call and didn’t realise that it’s already 8 PM. Was it appropriate to call at this time?
“Um, sorry for calling this late into the night. I just saw the flyer and… Um, I’ll just call another time—”
“No, thank you for calling. Is it safe to assume that you’re calling to apply?”
“Yes, that’s correct…. But may I ask one thing?”
“What is it?”
“The job description wasn’t written anywhere on the flyer. What kind of work is it?”
“The job description is stated on the back of the flyer.”
“Oh, it’s on the back…. I’m sorry.”
I assumed the flyer was only one sided, so I didn’t check the back.
I flipped the paper and skimmed through the job description written there.
Job description: Caretaking.
…Caretaking?
“Um, what kind of caretaking is it? Is it for pets?”
“Yes, it’s for pets.”
“Really? One can earn 2,000 yen per hour just by taking care of pets?”
“Don’t underestimate the job, taking care of pets is not easy. They can be emotionally unstable and may want a lot of attention.”
“Hahaha. It’s cute when pets want attention. It’s not a problem at all.”
Well, if that’s the case, it doesn’t seem like a big deal.
I like both dogs and cats, but dogs tend to show their need for care more, so if possible, I’d prefer working with dogs… Pets, huh? I’ve never had the opportunity to own one since I couldn’t afford to have a pet. But to be able to play with pets while earning an hourly wage of 2,000 yen, it truly is the best job.
“I would like you to start working from tomorrow if possible. Is that okay?”
“Huh, tomorrow?”
“If that doesn’t work for you—”
“N-No, it’s fine!”
Although I was a bit surprised to start working immediately without an interview, I don’t have a part-time shift tomorrow, so it’s not a problem.
“Then, please come to the school gate of the nearest high school to the workplace at 5 PM tomorrow.”
“Understood.”
With those final words, I ended the call and opened the map application.
The closest high school to the workplace is….
“Wait, isn’t that my school?!”
This is just too lucky. Moreover, if it’s at 5 PM, classes will be over, and I can go directly to the workplace without wasting any time.
I must be really lucky.… Perhaps because I’ve been working so hard all by myself all this time, God has decided to bestow me with happiness?
With that, I drifted off to sleep thinking about playing with pets.
