Chapter 6: The Reason for the Change

Episode 6: The Reason for the Change

“An accident?”

“I see. I thought you knew everything, but it seems there are things even you don’t know.”

My father frowned with a lonely expression.

The incident that led to Vanitas’ change in behavior? I wasn’t aware of it.

“Vanitas had a younger brother. A sibling one year younger.”

“Huh?”

In the story, Vanitas had a twin sister, but a younger brother? I couldn’t recall such a setting.

“His name was Nois. Nois Lindblum. He was our other son.”

“Nois…”

“Vanitas’ change was because of Nois. Nois is… no longer with us.”

“Uuuh…”

Upon hearing Nois’ name, my mother broke down in tears, and my father comforted her by putting his arm around her.

“It happened five years ago. Our Lindblum duchy was hit by an epidemic. It was a highly contagious and deadly disease. But it could be cured with the right medicine.”

“…”

“We lost Nois due to our negligence. After all, the carriage carrying the medicine, guarded by our Lindblum duchy’s knights, couldn’t prevent a sudden monster attack. Most of the medicine was ruined… including Nois’ share…”

Vanitas’ memories might be able to bring back some of these details, but I never expected such a heavy setting.

“After that, we couldn’t defy Vanitas’ anger. We bought slaves as he demanded, and we didn’t try to stop him. We couldn’t even stop the harm he caused. We knew that Vanitas loved Nois as part of the family.”

“Vanitas resented us because he couldn’t prevent us from losing Nois…”

It makes sense why Vanitas’ parents wouldn’t have been able to stop his reckless actions in the story.

Out of guilt for losing Nois, they allowed Vanitas to run rampant. And Vanitas, feeling alienated by his parents’ avoidance, accumulated even more anger.

“So… what do you want to do? You, who have taken on Vanitas’ identity. I can understand that you’re not the one who took our Vanitas away. Your existence here in the world of the novel is evidence enough. But what will you do from now on? You mentioned the fate of death. It’s hard to believe that you’re here, but if you know the future, how will you live as Vanitas Lindblum?”

“The answer is simple. I…”
