Chapter 18: Inside the Stronghold (Part II)
Gim felt like he wasn't making much progress in exploring the stronghold. The place kept making him go back and forth in elevation, he felt like he stayed at the same spot. His thoughts were interrupted when he walked into a wooden room that was very lit up. In the center of the room was a chandelier made of wood and a few lanterns. Rows of bookshelves stood on a red carpet. with a small distance between them from the front of the room all the way to the back. To his right was a black table with red linen covering the top. A floating book waved its pages mystically on top of the table.
He touched the book with his sword and the book began to glow at random intervals, blinking on and off. Suddenly a quiet chorus of bells was heard, and the book transferred the glow to Gimmick's sword. Gim instantly felt the effects of the enchanting table. He didn't know exactly how, but he knew his diamond sword now had Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Anthropods. He decided to try with his pieces of armor, so he took off his chest piece and hovered it above the book, but no blinking light or glow appeared. He repeated the process with the boots and helmet and got the same results.
"Hmm, why did it work for my sword then?" He tried hovering the intended items a few more times in case a different level of elevation made a change. He sighed in annoyance and put the armor back on. He started browsing through the rows of bookshelves. "How to punch wood!", "Growing in the Savannah's.", "A Step by Step Guide on How to Make a Bed.", and so many other titles. Gim didn't need to read any of them, and he didn't have the interest to either.
He continued walking through the bookshelves, skimming through the titles. At the eighth and last row of shelves, he came across a double chest crammed into the corner of the wall. He opened the chest and inside were a pair of iron leggings. Gim could never say no to free gear, so he threw it on. He began walking back to the front of the library when a thin reflection coming from the third row of shelves hit him in the eye. He walked over to where the reflection was coming from and realized it was an iron trapdoor. He tried to pry it open using his strength, but it didn't budge. Gim remained knelt by the iron trapdoor. 'Could it be a redstone powered mechanism? Perhaps its a trial that involves magic? Maybe a spy encoded this using a specific red book that I have to scavenge for, or maybe-' But then another thought broke his chain of thoughts.
[CLANG]
The sound of the diamond pickaxe hitting the iron trapdoor echoed through the library. 'Why am I so stupid? I had a pickaxe this whole time!' Gim inwardly complained. He quickly focused on something else as soon as he heard a familiar hiss. He looked into the room below the trapdoor. There was nothing besides a double ladder that went all the way to where he stood that he could see in the room. He didn't know how far down the ladder went. He did know one thing. This was a good chance to gain experience. Using the life essence from the mobs he killed he could enchant his diamond chest plate, and his diamond boots. He began making his way down the ladder. As he got further from the opening, and closer to the bottom, he began hearing more noises. There were a few shrill chirps that came in intervals of 5 seconds. Then he heard what seemed to be a group of zombies. He held his diamond sword as he climbed down. The very little light that came from above hit the blade giving it a dim glow. An abundant amount of red eyes opened up right below him, where he could see the ground. Luckily for him, spiders couldn't climb ladders.
"Not like any of you are a challenge though." He boasted to the family of critters under him. They simply hissed and kept jumping in an attempt to attack Gim. The ladder was placed on the blocks in a way where the bottom ridge of the ladder prevented the spiders from climbing up. He leapt off the remaining height of the ladder, and landed with a somersault. Immediately when he got up, he swung his blade directly to the right in a big horizontal arc. The red eyes disappeared and a repeated hiss was heard. He wiped his sword in satisfaction. 'Good to know Bane of Anthropods is working.' Gim walked forward, paying no mind to how long the walls were, or what else was in the room. He had his sword so anything that came his way he could quickly deal with. A group of 10 zombies had stumbled into his path and unfortunately for them, he needed to enchant his armor. He quickly dealt with them and continued moving forward. He walked for what felt like 30 minutes. 'What exactly is this place?' He began to run, taking down any monsters that decided to attack him. Layers of fog seemed to be moving backwards as he ran further into the room. He had run for so long, and killed so many mobs he had lost count. He stopped running, taking a moment to gather his surroundings a little bit. He couldn't see a ceiling. He couldn't see any walls. A spider and skeleton seemed to be creeping up shamelessly at the blonde Minecraft veteran. Gimmick sighed and disposed of them. The only thing he was able to see was the stone floor, and the fog. Not being able to see the walls of the room really bothered Gimmick. He felt overwhelmed by the size of the room. He took a shaky breath and looked back from where he came from. Nothing but darkness and a light gray cluster of clouds sitting a bit higher in the atmosphere.
He decided it was time to go back as he killed more than enough zombies and other monsters to enchant his diamond boots, chest plate, and his helmet. He also wanted to go back because he was starting to hate the size of the room the longer he was in there.
