Chapter 39:
Chapter 39:
Hearing the old man’s words, both Lu Chaoge and Xu Manli’s eyes lit up at the same time.
They had been struggling to find a wild ginseng of this caliber.
If they couldn’t source one soon, the project would likely come to a halt.
Now, with this old man delivering a century-old wild ginseng right to their doorstep, it was undoubtedly a huge relief.
Lu Chaoge quickly suppressed her excitement and spoke in a more pleasant tone, “Sir, we can discuss the cooperation later. Right now, let’s settle this issue first. You just said that Lin Chuan hit you—was that true?”
The old man glanced at Lin Chuan, then at Lu Chaoge, his eyes darting around shrewdly.
As a seasoned trickster, he could hear the subtle care in Lu Chaoge’s tone when she spoke about Lin Chuan.
Clearly, there was something unusual about their relationship.
Realizing this, he immediately shook his head vigorously. “No, no! When did I ever say that? I tripped on my own! What does it have to do with this young man?”
The receptionist’s eyes widened in shock.
“Sir, that’s not what you told me earlier! Didn’t you just say that he hit you?” she blurted out, flustered.
The old man feigned confusion, looking at her innocently. “Young lady, you can’t falsely accuse an old man like me. When did I ever say that? Clearly, you have a grudge against this young man and tried to frame him. Don’t pin that on me.”
“I… You clearly said… He…”
The receptionist was left completely speechless.
She turned to Lu Chaoge in panic. “CEO Lu, that’s not what he said before! He told me that Lin Chuan hit him…”
Lu Chaoge raised a hand, signaling her to stop. “Regardless of what others say, why didn’t you verify it yourself? There are surveillance cameras at the entrance. If you had checked the footage, the truth would have been obvious.”
“I…”
The receptionist was at a loss for words.
She had been so quick to believe the old man’s accusation because she already had a negative impression of Lin Chuan.
So, the moment the old man claimed Lin Chuan had hit him, she took it as fact without any thought of verifying it.
Who would’ve expected that this old man would turn around and betray her at the crucial moment?
Now, she had completely embarrassed herself.
Lu Chaoge let out a cold snort. “You made baseless accusations against an honored guest, severely damaging the reputation of Lu Medical Group. Someone like you is no longer fit to work here.”
“CEO Lu, please give me another chance! I promise I won’t make this mistake again!”
The receptionist hurriedly pleaded.
But Lu Chaoge remained as decisive as ever. “You all know my principles—I never give second chances. Go to finance, settle your wages, and leave immediately.”
The receptionist knew that once Lu Chaoge made a decision, not even a god could change her mind.
She had only herself to blame for not verifying the facts and blindly believing the old man, wrongly accusing Lin Chuan.
The other employees watched her dejected figure as she walked away, all stunned by what had just happened.
That receptionist had worked under Lu Chaoge for years and was considered one of her most loyal subordinates.
Lu Chaoge had always been known for being tolerant toward those loyal to her.
And, more importantly, everyone knew how much she despised Lin Chuan.
Normally, even if the receptionist had wronged him, Lu Chaoge would have just ignored it.
But today, she had done a complete 180.
Not only had she exploded in anger over this incident, but she even fired one of her long-time employees on the spot.
This made everyone realize something—Lu Chaoge now valued Lin Chuan highly.
But… why?
What on earth had Lin Chuan done to make Lu Chaoge suddenly change her attitude toward him?
Of course, Lu Chaoge wasn’t about to explain anything to them.
She merely cast a cold glance around and stated, “I assume all of you already know my relationship with Mr. Lin. He is my fiancé. From now on, whenever he visits Lu Medical Group, no one is allowed to disrespect him. Do you understand?”
“Understood!”
Though still shocked, the employees answered in unison.
Without saying more, Lu Chaoge turned to the old man. “Sir, please come inside.”
The old man nodded and followed Xu Manli into the building.
Lin Chuan, seeing that Lu Chaoge was ignoring him, spoke up. “And what about me?”
Lu Chaoge glanced back at him. “Do I really need to invite you inside? It’s not like this is your first time here.”
After taking a couple of steps, she suddenly added, “No matter what, he’s a guest. Of course, I have to prioritize my guests.”
With that, she ignored him again and quickly followed the old man.
Lin Chuan stood still for a moment, replaying her last sentence in his head.
“He’s a guest?”
“So, what am I? Not a guest?”
“Does that make me the host then?”
Was that a hint?
The corner of his lips curled slightly.
Interesting.
Since he was the ‘host,’ he didn’t need any special treatment. He silently followed behind.
As he looked at the old man being warmly welcomed by Lu Chaoge, a thought crossed his mind.
In the original novel, Qin Chao had only come to Lu Medical Group the day after obtaining the wild ginseng.
By then, Lu Chaoge had already purchased a so-called century-old wild ginseng from someone else.
When Qin Chao examined it, he immediately determined that it wasn’t truly wild—it had been artificially cultivated and force-ripened, making it far less valuable medicinally.
After having the ginseng tested with professional equipment, Lu Chaoge realized she had been scammed.
Could it be… that this old man was the scammer from the original plot?
Since Qin Chao had arrived a day later in the original story, he hadn’t crossed paths with this fraudster.
But because Lin Chuan had come to Lu Medical Group immediately after obtaining the wild ginseng, he had beaten Qin Chao to the punch.
So, had he just coincidentally run into this scammer?
Lin Chuan glanced at the old man, who was confidently boasting to Lu Chaoge, and a knowing smirk formed on his lips.
This is getting more and more interesting.
The four of them took the elevator to the sixteenth floor and entered a large conference room.
“Sir, please have a seat.”
Lu Chaoge gestured for the old man to sit before asking, “May I have your name?”
The old man smiled politely. “My name is Wan Jinyou.”
“That’s quite the name,” Lin Chuan remarked as he took a seat beside Lu Chaoge.
Wan Jinyou chuckled. “You flatter me.”
At that moment, Xu Manli returned, carrying three cups of tea. She placed them in front of each person.
“Manli, go and bring Director Guo from the research department,” Lu Chaoge instructed.
“Understood,” Xu Manli responded before leaving.
Lu Chaoge then turned back to Wan Jinyou. “You just mentioned that this wild ginseng has been in your family for generations?”
“Yes,” Wan Jinyou nodded. “My grandfather ventured to the northeast when he was young and personally dug it up in the Greater Khingan Mountains. He went through great hardships to bring it back—he was even robbed several times along the way, nearly losing his life.”
Lu Chaoge was surprised. “Such a precious herb… and you’re willing to sell it?”
Hearing her question, Wan Jinyou’s eyes suddenly turned red.
Lin Chuan smirked.
Here we go.
This old fox is about to spin a sob story.
