Chapter 66: Witch of Walpurgis (5)
“Kuu….”
As I looked at the creature slumped over asleep next to my pillow, I had many thoughts in an instant.
First, I wondered why the fierce creature had turned so docile and why Alex and the others hadn’t finished it off.
Just as those questions began to form in my head, Alex explained the situation.
“When Ariana collapsed, the creation spell that trapped it was released, and the weakened creature continued to hover near you.”
“Hovered around me, as opposed to running away or avoiding me?”
“Yes. It was a dangerous creature, so at first I tried to deal with it, but somehow it and Ariana were linked by a contract.”
“Me and the Witch of Walpurgis?”
…I don’t remember it at all, because it was right before I fainted.
Still, my normal self wouldn’t have thought of any other option than to kill her.
“Anyway, I was a little confused about that. I didn’t know if Ariana had made it her slave on purpose, or if the creature had volunteered to be your slave.
I think it was a contract that the creature was forced to make at some point, though I’m not sure why it decided to become your servant instead of running away.”
“Hmph….”
What a strange thing.
Just when I think I’ve finally gotten one nuisance out of the way, a new one starts to rear its ugly head.
“For whatever reason, it’s not going to do anything dangerous to Ariana now that it’s your slave, and it hasn’t really shown any signs of rage or hostility since then.
For whatever reason, you’re the one who owns it now, so we’re holding off on disposing of it because we think your opinion is the most important.”
“I see.”
In other words, my decisions would determine the fate of this creature.
Suddenly, I had more options than I’d ever thought possible, and with that came a whole host of problems.
If the Witch of Walpurgis was at full power I would have no hesitation in slaying her and ending the job but now that she’s my slave and no longer a threat to me, she’s as good as dead.
…She certainly doesn’t look dangerous when she’s sleeping so peacefully.
“…Kuuu?”
“Ah, you’re awake.”
The Witch of Walpurgis, rubbing her eyes and raising her body from the pillow, immediately made eye contact with me.
“Coo, coo! Coo!”
She then began to bounce herself up and down on the bed, greeting me as if she knew I was her owner.
“She’s cute.”
“…Cute?”
“Yeah, she’s cute because she’s kind of like Ariana.”
It’s similar to me?
“…….”
“Kuu?”
Alex’s words suddenly made me question, and I silently focused my gaze on the small creature in front of me.
For starters, it’s a demon that’s noticeably different in appearance, not to mention its personality is definitely far from my own.
Considering how hard I usually try to play the cultured peacock Young Lady, there’s no way I’m going to look like a puppy who just met his master.
Though it doesn’t hurt that I’ve been complimented on being cute, even if indirectly.
“You, come up here for a minute.”
“Coo?”
I extended the palm of my left hand and placed the slave in the palm of my hand, then brought it up to eye level and immediately began to scrutinize it.
Long black hair, dark eyes, black dress and black underwear.
Except for her white skin, she was covered in black from head to toe, so even though she looked like a small human, she was definitely a demon.
Though I have a feeling I’m getting closer and closer to being a villain, having a demon as a servant.
“What are you going to do, Arianna?”
“I don’t know, I’m thinking about it.”
To be honest, there was a time when I wanted a pet that I didn’t have to feed or clean up after, that I could just feed with magic.
It was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to have one, even if I didn’t use it in combat.
I’ve been working on it, and I’ve actually gotten to the point where I’m on the verge of contracting with a few spirits.
However, the last time I tried to give my power to one of them, dark magic got in the way.
Spirits and other minions are supposed to feed off of their masters’ magic, and I hadn’t found a single spirit or minion that could accept my dark magic.
In that sense, the fact that the Witch of Walpurgis had completed her contract with me meant that she was the only summon who could feed on my dark energy.
Short of creating a servant, I don’t have any other options, so this is probably my only chance.
“Kuu?”
Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m going to take her without thinking.
Having a servant that’s a steady drain on my magic would naturally reduce the amount of magic I can use in a day.
I can barely manage to use three spells’ worth of mana as it is, so it would be a risk to put that amount of mana into a minion.
Still, her main body was originally a mid-boss, so having her as a slave might be useful at some point….
I’m going to have to use the point deduction method.
It’s a way to simplify the gains and losses she’ll bring me and see if she’ll be a benefit or a detriment.
In my head, I’ve simplified the gains and losses of having the Witch of Walpurgis as a slave, and I’ve summarized the gains and losses I’ll get from it.
She’s the only subordinate I can tame with my dark magic +1
It was once a mid-boss, so I have some expectations for its maxed out abilities +1
It used to be a demon, so it looks like a villainous pet -1
Must expend a certain amount of magic every day to maintain her, reducing the amount of magic I can actually use -1
I heard Alex thinks it’s cute -1
And it just happened to revive today, ruining my precious date time with Alex….
“Coo, coo?”
Squawk.
“Coo, coo, coo….”
“Ariana! What’s wrong with you all of a sudden?!”
Ugh!
As soon as I heard Alex’s slightly panicked voice, I snapped out of it, and momentarily loosened my grip on my subordinate.
I almost took it out on this kid for something so personal.
“I’m sorry, I was thinking of something else for a moment….”
“I think Ariana just gave her a pretty mean glare.”
“Oh, no, I’m just in a bad mood.”
If Alex realized that I was trying to take out my frustration at having my date interrupted by this little creature, I’d surely lose it.
“Coo, coo! Coo, coo!”
“What?”
The Witch of Walpurgis must have instinctively sensed that I wasn’t pleased, because she suddenly used the bed as a stage to get my attention.
“Coo, coo!”
She then began to conjure up some simple elemental magic in her hands and began to use it in front of me.
A small fireball, a short water blade and a magical barrier the size of my palm.
She was performing tricks in front of me with all sorts of spells. I felt like an interviewer on an admissions board, watching a candidate’s self-promotion.
I’ve heard that some wizards purposely make pacts with the spirits associated with an attribute they can’t use, in order to gain access to it.
If I could use this minion to access magic of a different element, that would certainly be useful.
Besides, if I didn’t accept it as a servant, I wouldn’t be able to avoid killing it without leaving a trace.
She’s shown a willingness to trust me and stand by my side, and it’s only human to trust her for once, even if it’s a demon instead of a human.
“Very well, I’ll take you under my wing.”
“Kuuuu!”
The Witch of Walpurgis seemed to understand me, and she hugged me.
“That’s good, Arianna. I was hoping you’d have a summon.”
“I never imagined it would look like this, but it’s better than nothing.”
If I keep feeding it a steady diet of my own spare magic, it’ll eventually become a force to be reckoned with.
With half a year to go before the final showdown, it’s good to have as much of it as possible.
“Take care in the future, Witch of Walpurgis….”
With that thought, I called her name for the last time.
I realized I’d forgotten something important.
“Maybe it’s a little long to use the full name of the Witch of Walpurgis.”
On a normal day, this might not be a problem, but in a combat situation, I won’t have the luxury of calling someone by such a long name.
Perhaps I need to give her a new name that’s quick and easy to call.
“You’re the Witch of Walpurgis, so I’ll shorten it to Walg….”
“Anything more than that, Ariana, and you will lose your ducal honor.”
“Not more than that, Ariana.”
“Koooo! Koooo!”
Before the words were even out of my mouth.
Two people and one dog voiced their vehement objections at the same time.
Eventually, Alex and Elise came up with a few good name suggestions, and we compromised on my choice.
“Your name is going to be Purr from now on, okay?”
Pour, the middle two letters from the Witch of Walpurgis.
It didn’t detract too much from the Witch of Walpurgis archetype, but it fit her current persona.
“Koooooo!”
Purr rubbed herself against me, obviously pleased with her new name.
Whether or not she would actually serve me well in the future remains to be seen.
