Chapter 53
Chapter 53 ‘People like Miriam just bully them to their heart’s content when they feel like it, then let them go and repeat. She’s entirely driven by her whims.’ I don’t know if there’s another new girl coming in, but it’s good for me that Miriam, who hold power in the dorm, is quiet. If this comfortable daily life continued, I could easily make money and go back home… On the day I visited the square, when I showed Marie the birthday gift I had bought for Colin, she let out a brief exclamation. “It’s nice, you must have tried to pick something nice.” “Right, isn’t it?” “Must have cost you quite a bit.” Marie informed me that the gift I had chosen was something her father and fellow lawyers had enjoyed. That made me feel even more flattered that I had such good taste. Today again, I helped Marie clean the stairs, and then went up to the second floor to clean the room. When I entered Lucas’ room, I was shocked. “Oh my god, this is a mess!” As I muttered in a combination of shock and admiration, Lucas, who was lying face down on the bed, lifted his head. “Rosie, are you here?” “I’m here? here? That’s all you have to say? In this pig pen?” I slammed the door in case anyone was listening. Glaring daggers at him, I noticed Lucas chuckling as if he found something amusing. “Pig pen? This is officially my workspace.” “Oh, is that what you’re calling this messy bed and floor? That’s make sense!” Looking down, I saw the blue carpet littered with scattered papers and flowers. The bed was just as chaotic. Glancing at one of the papers, I noticed sketches of perfume bottle designs and lists of fragrance ingredients, their names scribbled in barely legible writing. As I began picking up the papers, Lucas told me not to. “It’s for the new perfume I’m working on. Don’t pick them up.” “Why can’t you work at your desk like a normal person? And for your information, I’m here to clean, not to hang out.” Lucas narrowed his eyes at me with a smile, then grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the bed. I yelped in protest. “I said I need to clean!” “Alright, alright. Just do this one for me, and then you can clean. If you help me out, I won’t bother you.” Sitting on the bed, which was cluttered with papers, Lucas hastily pushed the pile aside, gesturing for me to sit next to him. I already knew from past experience that Lucas was stubborn. Having worked in this house for over a month, I realized that the shortcut to saving time is to just do what he want rather than wasting time arguing here. I frowned with a disapproving look on my face, then sat down on the bed with Lucas. Lucas flopped onto his back with a satisfied grin, causing the mattress to bounce. “Wait, don’t tell me you want me to lie down too?” “Why not? It’s more comfortable, right?” I was about to ask if this was a useless trick, but Lucas just lay down and roughly organized the scattered materials. I finally let out a long sigh and lay down next to him. I felt soft bedding on my back, and rustling paper caught under my fingertips. The comfortable bed smelled good. The thin blanket felt soft against my skin. I told myself I’d play along for a bit and get up, but once I lay down, I found myself wanting to take a long nap. At that time, Lucas turned towards me and handed me a piece of paper. “This is the new perfume I’m working on.” Squinting, I looked at the messy handwriting on the note. The sunlight streaming through the window made the paper almost translucent. With our heads close together, we examined it. “Tuberose, violet, peach… What’s all this?” I read Lucas’s notes one by one. Additionally, words like musk and vanilla were written on it. Lucas began twisting a strand of my hair around his finger. “These are the scents I’m using for the new perfume. I’ll blend them into a base oil to create the fragrance.” Hmm, I furrowed my brow, trying to imagine the combination. Peach and violet. Individually, they were pleasant scents, but I couldn’t quite picture how they’d smell together. “Is there a reason why you use these three things?” Lucas turned on his side and looked at my face. I shrugged at his intense gaze, as if he were admiring a work of art. Lucas explained while supporting his head with his hand and pointing out each note on the paper I was holding with his other hand. “Tuberose is the flower that was blooming in the banquet hall when the four of us went to the palace party.” “I see.” “And violet is the same color as the amethyst brooch I lent you that day.” Wait… me? I looked puzzled and turned my head to Lucas. “… And?” Lucas stared at my face for a moment before playfully poking my cheek with his finger. “Peach is this.” “This is the peach.” He grinned mischievously. So, in other words, Lucas was crafting this perfume based on how he saw me at the royal palace party. Tuberose blooming in the royal palace party banquet hall. The violet that mirrored the color of my eyes and the amethyst bracelet I wore. And the peach, symbolizing my flushed cheeks from the makeup I wore that day. Lucas smiled as he told me one by one the reasons why he chose these scents. I looked at Lucas with a surprised face. “Are you saying you were thinking of me when you created this perfume?” Lucas nodded his head vigorously, like a puppy expecting praise.. Then, he fell face down on the bed and cupped his face like a flower cup with both hands. “It’s going to smell amazing, isn’t it?” “Mmm, I guess so.” Lucas handed me another piece of paper with a design for a perfume bottle. The bottle was shaped like a teardrop and pink in color, and it looked adorable. “Do you have a name for the perfume?” “Of course.” Lucas looked at me lying down and looking at the paper, and then pressed his forehead against mine without causing any pain. For a brief moment, we were close, then his face pulled back. “The First Day at the Party.’” “…You might as well call it ‘Country Bumpkin.’” When I answered sullenly, Lucas burst into laughter, clutching his stomach as if it were the funniest thing he’d heard. Then, he shared his ambitious plan. “Anyway, I will never let Rosie pay for this perfume.” “What? Why?” “Because the moment it’s finished, I’ll give it to you first.” Then he pouted his lips with a sulky face. “If you go and buy it at a boutique like last time, I’ll really be upset.” “What’s wrong with that? I just paying a fair price for something nice.” “That just makes us seem like a seller and a customer! No way. This perfume is special. It’s for you, Rosie.” “Hmm.” Lucas’s tone was unusually serious, as if he had resolved to say these exact words when presenting the perfume to me. “Rosie will be the first person to try this perfume.” I quietly listened to Lucas and laughed. This is because his young face was full of ambition. “Alright, fine. If you give it to me, I’ll use it well. I guess I’ll be counting down the days until it’s ready.” “Just wait. This perfume will surprise everyone. Even the people in the capital will be astonished.” “Okay, okay, you little rascal.” I lightly squeezed Lucas’ nose and got up from the bed. Since I was already with him, I figured I’d ask what I’d been curious about. “By the way, Lucas, did you pick out a birthday gift for Colin?” “Birthday gift?” Lucas sat up with a rustle, stretching lazily in the sunlight that streamed through the window. His expression turned indifferent. “What could I possibly get him? Colin doesn’t want anything anymore. He buys whatever books he wants every day, wears whatever clothes he likes, and eats whatever he feels like.” Since all three of us were no longer children who only sucked our fingers. They had grown enough to take care of their needs on their own, which made choosing a birthday gift even more difficult for Lucas. “Still, you need to give him something. Do you have any ideas at all?” “Hmm,” Lucas thought. Lucas fell into thought, mumbling, “Well, last year I gave him a ring.” “A ring?” “Yeah, a birthstone ring. It’s a small one with an emerald. Sometimes he wears it.” “Ah, I think I’ve seen it before…” I remembered the emerald ring I saw while cleaning the toilet room. It was a ring with three tiny emeralds that resembled Colin’s eyes. So that’s the ring Lucas had given him. Remembering its delicate design, I pursed my lips. ‘Huh? for someone who acts uninterested, he gave a pretty good gift last year’ If I had chosen those cheap cufflinks from the shop as Colin’s gift, I might’ve felt a bit embarrassed I secretly breathed a sigh of relief and patted Lucas’ head, telling him he did well. He accepted it with a puzzled expression, his hair becoming a mess under my hand. Looking up at me with his disheveled hair, Lucas said. “Well, If I can’t find anything else, I’ll just buy him something he wants when we visit the villa. It’s not that hard.” “Villa? What villa?” Oh, now that I think about it, Daniel has a villa in his name. When I asked him why he was suddenly talking about a vacation home, Lucas shrugged. “Colin’s birthday party is being held at the villa. It’s almost summer, and it’s the social season.” “Really? I thought it’d be held here at the mansion.” “We don’t really care about the party, but a lot of nobles kept suggesting the villa. Since it’s summer, everyone’s heading to their vacation homes anyway.” In the summer, nobles typically retreated to their summer villas in resort areas, avoiding the blazing sun during the day and hosting parties late into the night. Lucas grumbled, ruffling his hair in frustration. Whenever they stayed at the townhouse during the vacation season, nobles from nearby villas would visit incessantly, which he found bothersome. Disliking unnecessary contact with others, Lucas wrinkled his face in annoyance. But then, as if an idea struck him, he turned to me with a bright expression. “Oh, that’s right. Rosie, why don’t you come with us?”
