Chapter 56: A Demon Representing Justice
As Batman closed in, almost in his face, Ivan Vanko could only whip his electrified whips around him frantically, screaming internally.
"Don't come any closer!"
"Scared now?" Su Ye said in a deep voice. With his black, bat-themed suit, he indeed looked like a demon from hell, ready to claim souls.
In Western mythology, devils and demons often have bat wings. In Western culture, bats are symbols of evil, unlike in Chinese culture, where bats symbolize fortune and happiness due to their homophonic connection with the word for "blessing" and are carved on celebratory items.
Thus, Batman's aura and gravitas were off the charts. Just his appearance alone gave him the upper hand.
Coupled with his uncanny, almost demonic footwork, Batman completely shattered Vanko's confidence. Despite flailing his whips furiously around himself, Vanko felt no sense of safety.
At this moment, Vanko regretted not adding long-range weapons to his armor. Hammer's "Ex-Wife" was unreliable, but there were other options. If worst came to worst, he could've DIY-ed something himself.
But he had chosen the thrill of whipping Iron Man, and now it seemed like the worst decision he could've made.
Batman didn't care about Vanko's regrets. He closed the distance and extended his arms.
Vanko's vision blurred, and when he regained focus, both his arms were locked by Batman. His whips fell to the side, sparking furiously, but all the sparks in the world were useless if they couldn't land a hit.
Throughout the entire sequence, Vanko had no idea what had just happened.
"Seeking revenge for your father—there's nothing inherently wrong with that. Repaying kindness and avenging wrongs is only natural. In fact, for what you did in Monaco, I might even applaud you," Su Ye said.
As Su Ye spoke, Vanko's eyes lit up, but in the distance, Tony Stark's face darkened.
In Monaco, Vanko had wrecked a few F1 cars, but the casualties weren't severe.
F1 cars may look fragile and fast, but they're highly safe. Didn't Tony Stark's car flip over, crash headfirst, and yet he still climbed out, ready to fight Vanko?
Of course, Tesla wouldn't have fared so well...
But before Vanko could feel pleased, Su Ye spoke again.
"However, you should never have let your personal vendetta harm innocent people, causing injuries and deaths. For that alone, you're beyond forgiveness!"
Vanko suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.
"So, I will pass judgment on you!"
As he spoke, Su Ye gripped both of Vanko's mechanical arms and twisted them outward. The immense force instantly deformed the arms, and Vanko's real arms inside were dislocated with a sickening crack, causing him to scream in agony.
But Su Ye didn't stop there. He raised his leg and delivered an upward kick straight to Vanko's helmet.
With a loud bang, Vanko's screams were abruptly cut off. The metal mask of his helmet caved in from the kick, distorting his face and muffling his voice, leaving only faint groans.
At that moment, Su Ye released one of Vanko's arms. With a flick of his wrist, a black double-edged dagger appeared, shaped like a bat, with wing-like dark blades extending outward.
In one swift motion, he swung the dagger. With a sharp snap, Vanko's thick, steel-armored arm—thicker than an adult's thigh—was severed, flying into the air along with a spray of blood.
"Ugh! Ugh!"
His arm, along with the armor, was cut off at the base. Vanko wanted to scream but couldn't; his deformed helmet muffled his cries.
Before him, another flash of black light—his other arm was severed as well.
The intense pain and lack of oxygen from his blocked helmet caused Vanko to pass out.
Su Ye remained unfazed. Holding the dagger in one hand, he used the other to plunge into Vanko's chest and pull out the glowing arc reactor.
Vanko was completely incapacitated. His helmet, filled with his own blood and saliva, silenced him entirely as he slipped into unconsciousness.
In the distance, Tony Stark and James Rhodes shuddered as they watched Batman's cold, black silhouette.
"Hey! Who the hell is this guy?" James Rhodes whispered as he leaned toward Stark.
Tony Stark shook his head. He had no idea what Batman's deal was. Even after asking JARVIS for a quick search, nothing had come up.
"So, should we maybe…"
Rhodes didn't finish, but as his close friend, Stark instantly understood: they should make a run for it while Batman was busy with Vanko.
But before Stark could reply, Batman suddenly turned his head. Beneath the black mask, his piercing eyes stared coldly, like the gaze of a demon.
At that moment, cold sweat broke out on both of them. Batman had just mercilessly turned Vanko into a limbless wreck—would he spare them a second thought?
If he were at full strength, Tony Stark believed he wouldn't fear Batman. But now, with his ammo depleted and his arc reactor's energy running low, he had only one option left.
"Run!"
Stark shouted, and flames burst from his hands and feet as he lifted off. Beside him, Rhodes did the same.
Just as they ascended a few meters and were about to pick up speed, two black cables shot out, wrapping around their legs. The other ends of the cables were anchored to a nearby steel structure.
"We're not done talking yet. Why the rush?"
Batman stood atop the steel frame, gripping the two cables firmly in each hand.
"And without my permission, you thought you could just slip away quietly?"
With a sharp tug on the cables, Batman yanked Iron Man and War Machine down from the air.
Thud! Thud!
The two crashed to the ground, their arc reactors flickering as their energy reserves neared depletion.
"Who are you? What do you want?"
Tony Stark's tone was grim. Unlike James Rhodes, if his arc reactor failed, he'd be in serious trouble.
"My name is Batman. I'd like to have a proper discussion about the damage you two caused while flying around the city earlier."
