Chapter 7: Chapter 7 : Confronting Frank and Meeting Annabelle
It was morning, as Michael had just finished his VR experience. He stretched then went to eat. He met his sister eating cereal while looking at her phone.
Seeing him show up, Mira immediately dropped her phone and a gleam appeared in her eyes along with a mischievous smirk.
"Look who came to join us. Did you have fun ? Can you already break boulder now? Smash mountains ?"
Michael rolled his eyes. " I just started. You think I can stop missiles and all that ? I am barely an F-grade evolver. Wait a few years."
"Hmph, if this lady had become an evolver she would already be smashing spaceships left and right. Did you become lazy since becoming an evolver? What is this ? "
Michael ignored Mira comments that were becoming more and more outrageous and proceeded to prepare his breakfast in silence. Same as always green tea some eggs, bread and some fruits. Stats weren't everything, and eating healthy still would affect your body in some way.
"Can I come with you to the gym ?" Mira asked. School hadn't started for her yet, and it was still the holidays, so he didn't see any reason to refuse her.
"You can come but don't do anything stupid right beside me, and we are good". Michael replied.
Her answer was to steal some bread and some fruits from his plate. Michael almost reconsidered taking her with him. 'She is lucky she is my cute sister...'.
They left early and made their way on foot, as Michael still didn't have a car yet. Arriving at the Argonaut martial gym as usual, he met the pretty receptionist, flashing her a smile.
"Here is my membership card. Mira, give her yours, let's go." The last part was addressed to his sister, of course.
Mira, embarrassed, gave her her membership card. She had a little anxiety disorder for anyone that wasn't close to her. Fortunately, she was still able to give hers.
Poor as they were, they were still sponsored by the city, so she was a member and had her card.
As usual for Michael the goal was to verify his max attributes and find his sparring partner. Annabelle wasn't there yet. Sending her a message, she answered she would be there in a few minutes.
She promised she would be there, and Michael didn't take any issue to this. It wasn't her gym and she didn't live that close. It would take her time to reach this place.
But she still had a membership to another Argonaut martial gym, so she wouldn't have any problem entering.
Mira and Michael separated, as Mira went to see her friend, she caught a glimpse of when she entered.
After waving at her, Michael went to pick a barbel. He squatted down, picked one with his left arm, lifted it above his head then got up all in one fluid motion. Finding it too light, he squatted down to lightly drop it.
He then went to pick a heavier one, and a heavier one....until he reached his limit. In the end, he founded out his max was 170 kg (375 lbs). He then used his right arm to confirm this. When he evolved to level 4 he put the 12 points of stats he had gotten into strength and constitution.
On the treadmill, the speed he measured was 47 km/h (29 mph).
Finishing what he had to do, the next step to his plan was sparing.
Again he couldn't hire an instructor, so he went to fight another training dummy. Yet a voice interrupted him :
"Michael, there you are. I see that you went to the sparing space, let me be your partner for this session."
Michael turned around, mildly surprised by the challenge offer. What he didn't expect however was the voice it belonged to.
His vision landed on an athletic youth adorning medium length hair with a wild aura.
Frank Hicks stood there with a smirk on his face, and the air around him felt different, more oppressif. A powerful pressure radiated from him.
"I made some progress in martial art lately. I would like to verify my strength. I see you are looking for a sparring partner. Let's beat each other up." Frank declared confidently.
Michael frowned. He didn't have anything to win by doing this. Frank felt strong, and he didn't feel like fighting him. There was nothing to gain, and it was clear that Frank was hostile toward him.
He didn't want to get injured for a stupid duel where there was nothing to gain.
"Sorry brother. I already have someone else to spar. I gave her an appointment and she will be here soon. You should find someone else" Michael replied with an indifferent expression.
Turning around, he was about to walk away, but Frank didn't come here to be refused. He learned about Michael schedule from a classmate he paid off, and waited for him for half an hour just so they could fight.
He even brought his friend so that they could watch and even taunt and humiliate Michael.
"I guess that's all you amount to. Mister first class can't even accept a challenge from me ? Or are you too arrogant to not put me in your eyes." he answered with disdain.
Immediately, his friends clamored :
"An incapable is an incapable, after all. He got a trash talent, and now he is too embarrassed to show his prowess."
"He gets insulted, and he doesn't even fight back. Guess he is a wimp. Quite laughable that they gave him that invitation to Nirvana. Guess the standards are not quite the same."
"Maybe he needs an advantage. Frank should fight with one arm, close one eye, and not wear armor."
"Doesn't he want to represent the poor ? Maybe he realizes he should stay in his place. Trash will produce trash, after all. The reality won't change with one character"
Michael had turned around at Frank response. And he listened quietly to their taunt. But he wasn't affected by their words, except the last one. Nevertheless, he knew he couldn't afford to make a rash decision.
"Don't you have a lot of resources? I am sure your parents and relatives left you with a ton of resources, potion, armor, weapons, accessories not to mention power levelling. Your parents assign powerful people around you to carry you, like in a bus. What's the point of fighting me? You don't feel any shame at all when you ask me to do this ?" Michael replied with contempt.
Frank frowned. Indeed, as soon as he found out he had the D-rank talent "Dark Pressure", he told his family about it so that would be proud of him. They then happily assigned him a frightening amount of resources. Nevertherless he wanted to fight Michael, and the only way to do that was for him to accept a duel willingly.
Michael wasn't afraid of Frank. Evolver had high status, money and power, but they were also governed under strict laws imposed on them. Not to mention, He was training in the famous Argonaut Martial Center. There were aspiring law enforcement officers training there and the instructor belonging to the Guild Mythology serving doubly as security were no joke.
You couldn't attack anyone without issuing a formal duel and the recipient of this duel accepting. Otherwise, at minimum, the instructors breaking your arms and legs and throwing you outside was in the realm of possibilities. At worth suspension of all martial gym membership, trouble with law enforcements... He didn't believe that Frank a descendant from a big family with high talent and bright future would be so stupid.
"How about this? Give me 15 days, I will fight you fair and square. Inside a VR capsule of course with the duel application. I don't want to be injured. Also, you are the one who insists on this duel, and you are the one who has something to prove, so you have to give me 100,000 credits if I win". Michael replied, his tone turning cold.
"If you can't wait, I will fight you in his stead. But I have to warn you, my fists will not be soft". A beautiful voice suddenly sounded behind Frank.
The latter felt a chill down his spine. For he didn't sense anything at his back until the voice was heard.
Along with the reaction stat attribute increasing, the 5 senses would have a moderate increase and even a six sense enabling the evolver to sense danger would appear.
Yet he didn't hear her, nor felt her presence. Turning around his eyes landed on her.
The newcomer was a brunette with bright crystal eyes, petite nose and cherry lips placed harmoniously on her face. She had pale skin, and was of average height.
With thick and voluminous hair and a beautiful athletic hourglass figure akin to a volleyball female Olympic athlete, she stood there calmly. Her figure would make most straight people admire.
Nevertheless, Frank was not in the mood to admire. Because as soon as he left his eyes wander too long, he felt a powerful killing intent from her directed right to his self.
She had changed from hiding her presence to channeling pressure on his single person. Her pressure even stronger than his. His six's sense alerting him of the danger he was in.
