Chapter 6: Scan
After their brief reunion, Jay's family had a truly happy evening after several days of stress.
And with Jay's recovery, the family's worries had vanished, replaced by feelings of joy.
"Is this all the food you cooked, Jay?" his father asked happily as he looked at the food on the table.
"Yes, Dad, I cooked it myself," Jay replied with a smile.
"So, where did you get so many fish?" his mother asked.
"I fished them with my brother, in the river behind the village, mommmm," Nining immediately replied enthusiastically.
"You caught them?" his mother asked, confused and incredulous.
As far as they knew, only a few elders in their village possessed good fishing skills.
And none of those elders were from their family, so it was understandable that Jay's parents were confused.
"Yes, Jay and Nining went fishing alone. Perhaps the reason Jay caught so many fish is due to his talent and luck as a novice angler," Jay reasoned to his father.
"Yes, that's usually the case," his father responded positively, because, as Jay had said, first-timers usually have good luck catching fish.
While chatting with his family, Jay subconsciously remembered the system's function: it could scan and copy other people's skills.
Especially since he only had one chance a week to copy a skill, Jay couldn't waste the opportunity.
So he decided to check out his family's skills.
( System tries to scan Dad) Jay instructed the system.
[Scan....]
[Master Farming/Expert Gardening/Beginner Carpentry]
(Ohh… Dad has 3 skills, explain the levels of those skills.) Jay, seeing his father's skills, asked the system for more details.
[A person's skill levels are divided into Beginner, Advanced, Master, Grand Master, and Creator] the system replied.
(Oh...there are 5 levels, this is very interesting. So how long does it usually take someone to master a skill?) Jay asked the system again.
[It usually takes 1-2 years to master a skill from Beginner to Advanced, 3-5 years to Advanced, 5-10 years to Master, 15-25 years to Grand Master, and 30 years to Creator] the system replied.
(It's a long time...I thought it would be short, but it turns out it takes quite a while) Jay replied after learning this information.
(Now try scanning mother's skills) Jay replied again.
[ Scan...
Cooking Advanced/Sewing Master/Gardening Master/Housekeeping Expert]
( Ohhhh… Mom has 4 skills, and almost all of them are advanced, except for gardening, which is at the Master level. This is truly unexpected.) Jay was surprised by the results, finding that his mother's skills were more extensive than his father's, not to mention her Master-level gardening skills.
This was also something Jay greatly admired. Thinking about his backyard garden, which was neatly arranged and yielded abundant produce, Jay felt that his mother's work was indeed worthy of being rated as a Master.
( Then scans Nining's skills.) Jay replied, still curious and intrigued by the system's scan function.
[ Scan…
Acting Beginner/Speaking Beginner/Crying Beginner.]
( Wow… Nining is truly amazing, having 3 skills, but what's with this acting and crying skill? Are they abilities that can be copied from a child?) Jay sighed as he looked at Nining's three skills.
After seeing all the skills his family possessed, Jay had no intention of copying any of them, believing that what was needed right now was a skill that could change his and his family's lives.
That ability was related to strength and hunting, based on what he remembered from the water level of the Anak Adam River he had seen that afternoon.
Jay already had a hunch that a long drought would likely occur in the near future, and if there was a long drought, it would likely impact the harvest in his village.
This would also directly impact the food supply of his entire village. So, before that happened, It actually happened.
Jay decided to use his good skills to store plenty of food in his space to avoid the worst-case scenario.
"Jay, after you finish dinner tonight, you can take the fish to your grandparents.
They sent money for your medical expenses while you were unconscious, and this time, when you wake up, give them nutritious food.
As a token of your devotion and gratitude," his father then instructed Jay.
"Okay, Dad, Jay will deliver it later," Jay replied.
######
The evening atmosphere in Jay's village felt serene, with the mountains and vast rice fields in the background.
The sunset setting in the west of the village was captivating, and several villagers were enjoying their free time after working in the fields.
They were gathered and chatting, and the tired but smiling faces clearly showed the high hopes the villagers had for the upcoming harvest.
"It looks like this harvest will be quite good," said a middle-aged villager to another.
"I hope so too. With a good harvest, we'll have enough food to eat," another responded.
"Have you decided what to buy when the harvest comes?" asked another villager.
"I want to buy new clothes for my son," another answered immediately.
"I want to buy shoes for my brother," another, not to be outdone, quickly responded.
Seeing the enthusiasm displayed by the villagers, Jay felt happy and content with the hope they all had.
However, Jay also felt a pang of anxiety and sadness. He somehow had a feeling that this harvest season would be the last good one they would enjoy.
For some reason, Jay felt this strongly, but he also hoped that his premonition would be wrong.
Because if he had a choice, Jay certainly wouldn't want anything bad to happen to his family or the people he knew.
"Hey… Isn't that Paul's son, Jay?" a villager noticed Jay's arrival and informed the others.
"Ah, that's right, it's him! Looks like he's regained consciousness!" another responded after confirming that it was Jay walking towards them.
"Thank goodness he's okay. I noticed Uncle Paul and Aunt Senorita haven't been feeling well all day," another commented.
"Jay, where are you going?" a village elder asked Jay.
"Ah… Grandpa Hans, I'm going to my grandparents' house," Jay replied with a friendly smile.
"Right, you should tell them you're better. Don't worry them," replied the village elder, Hans.
"Okay, Grandpa Hans. Then I'll take my leave." Jay greeted Grandpa Hans and several other villagers.
After walking away from the villagers, Jay felt quite relieved. Don't look at him calmly, because he wasn't as calm as people seemed.
This was due to his newfound adjustment to the current situation. Fortunately, he had put the fish he had brought for his grandparents into his space.
If the villagers found out he had brought enough fish for his grandparents, they would surely ask where he got them.
He didn't want that to happen, as everyone was in need right now, and if they saw something good that came from a common source, they would surely demand a share.
So, before leaving, his parents reminded him to hide the fish, trying to avoid encountering other villagers.
However, Jay, remembering the other route to his grandfather's house, felt it unnecessary. Besides, it would be a longer journey, so he didn't want to waste too much time on the road.
Besides, he had a space, so he simply put the fish into his space, so he wouldn't have to worry about being discovered by the villagers.
