Chapter 40
A revolution has erupted in Germany.
But the country that was born from it was not the Weimar Republic.
It was the German Free Socialist Republic.
A German Free Socialist Republic established by the revolution of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Something-or-other.
It was also funny that freedom and socialism existed together.
“German revolution, huh? What kind of events cause a revolution to happen?”
Rosa Luxemburg. Originally, her revolution was supposed to fail.
But here, the revolution broke out while the German Empire was still maintained?
How much of a mess did they make for that to happen?
“They say the Kaiser was driven out of Berlin.”
Every piece of news coming in is nothing but devastating.
World War I ended quite emptily.
With the White Army victorious in the Reds and Whites Civil War, not a well-prepared Communist revolution gripped Bavaria.
“This one looks serious.”
What event could affect things so much to cause an instant suppression?
Rosa Luxemburg is supposed to be immediately suppressed, humiliated, and executed. It’s strange.
Well, Rosa Luxemburg did rise up late.
Did they prepare thoroughly in the process, even recruiting the German regular army?
Unlike actual history, they weren’t seriously disarmed.
In that case, could Germany become the communist motherland, different from the original history?
Is Trotsky in Germany?
“They say a revolution broke out while trying to attack France again.”
“A defeated country, barely surviving through negotiations, is going to do that? Shouldn’t the Kaiser be living in the same era as me?”
Well, even Hitler tried to pay off his bankruptcy through war, so that’s understandable, but still, this is pushing it.
They should look more at the situation.
As I thought, my prediction was right.
Germany should end up this way, being so German. Yeah.
Then, can I just sweep all the benefits depending on how this civil war turns out?
If the Reds take control in one fell swoop, I can just swallow everything I got from Germany.
The problem is what will happen to our mustachioed buddy; what will happen in World War II?
Given the nature of communism, they might be less affected by the Great Depression.
Will they fight to spread communism instead of the Soviet Union?
Will I later be able to legitimately smack Germany around?
I heard that Patton is currently forming an armored division with Mikhail Drozdovsky and Ungern in Russia.
World War II is ultimately important.
I don’t know if the Germany we face will be Nazi Germany or Communist Germany, but it seems we will clash with Germany eventually.
“Hmmm.”
If we look at the opportunity, it would be better to intervene now. Considering we just finished the civil war, it wouldn’t be possible to support the Kaiser in Germany’s civil war.
“Your Highness?”
“How many White Army troops are currently mobilizable?”
“Considering forces tied up in wiping out the Red remnants and ensuring order, we can mobilize about 500,000 immediately from the West. No way.”
Five hundred thousand, huh? The population is indeed quite large.
That’s the number of troops immediately mobilizable, and taking all the White Army into account, it would be several times more.
But with how vast Russia’s land is, having many troops doesn’t mean they are all available.
I shook my head.
“No. I’m just suggesting we prepare for any unforeseen circumstances. Just because we’ve received help doesn’t mean we intend to support the Kaiser.”
Unless it’s reasonable compensation.
I don’t particularly see any reason to support the civil war.
What we need to do now is keep an eye on Germany while stabilizing our internal situation.
The damage from the civil war is more significant than it seems.
Sure, the population is abundant, but aside from that, rebuilding cities will take some time.
The situation is already complicated, with Azerbaijan declaring independence, changing history, and aligning with Britain while moving군 to incorporate it back into our region. Georgia is even more of a mess.
“Well then, we should focus on our own business here.”
“What do you mean by business?”
“I have to personally go around the areas severely affected by the battle this time.”
First, now, this Petrograd.
Next, I have to go around Moscow, Tsaritsyn, and Yekaterinburg, gathering popular opinion.
Like a politician on a campaigning tour.
Petrograd has seen many refugees returning, and citizens who lived under the tyranny of the Bolsheviks.
I have to properly soothe them and promise them a future.
After leaving the Tsar, the Bolsheviks they believed in turned out to be no different from the Tsar.
Then now, a new Tsar, who seems the same but with a different name, appears.
So, doesn’t that mean I have to soothe the people’s sentiments?
Anyway, even though places under Bolshevik control suffered from their tyranny, they would have been influenced by communism.
For a while, we indeed need to govern by the help we’ve received.
I wandered around the streets of Petrograd, soothing the citizens.
“The Saint personally caressed our daughter, and she jumped up!”
“Grandmother woke up!”
“I’ve been starving for a long time; my belly is full!”
People tend to lean on something during hard times.
Human hearts depend on their will.
And thus, the sessions with the sosyeong go on for a while.
* * *
Around this time, there was still an unfinished war by the negotiation countries.
It was the Turkish War of Independence arising from the disbanded Ottoman Empire.
It began with the people rising up in the beautifully torn apart Turkey, and now the hero of the Gallipoli battle, and a renowned hero of the Great War from the Ottoman Empire, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is currently leading the Turkish Grand National Assembly (The Independence Army), messing with the great powers.
Without support from the Soviet Union and in an even worse situation than actual history, Atatürk was surprisingly beating up the great powers while radiating the spirit of independence.
To make things worse, the Greek army, which rushed forward triumphantly while shouting Megali idea, was beaten by the Turkish army, reaching the end of their offensive.
“Looks like Atatürk will be running wild at this rate.”
“They said they will reclaim Eastern Roman territory, but the Greeks are stuck right here.”
“Germany’s in a state of chaos right now.”
“In that case, rather than resisting Turkish independence, it might be better to tolerate it.”
The great powers were swaying this way, but.
However, unlike actual history, with the Reds vs. Whites Civil War ending in a victory for the White Army, the great powers would begin to harbor different thoughts.
The Great War ended far too laughably.
They needed a symbol of victory for the Great War.
Austria had been suitably torn apart, and Germany was being treated leniently.
If they had known the Russian Civil War would end with a White Army victory this quickly, they would have regretted not tearing Germany and Austria apart even further.
But it was too late.
In this case, they needed to shred the Ottoman Empire as much as possible.
After much deliberation, the negotiation countries turned their eyes back to Russia.
Alright. The civil war might have ended, but just recently, Russia still has millions of troops remaining.
What if they draw them in to give Atatürk a solid poke in the side?
Especially since Russia had historically claimed to be the successors of Rome, they were rather inclined to beat up the Ottoman Empire.
Recently, it seems they were calling themselves the successors of Rome and even as the Third Roman Empire, as if for national pride.
Isn’t now the chance?
“Hasn’t the Russian civil war ended? Didn’t they have millions of troops left?”
“How about requesting support from Princess Anastasia?”
“The princess is known to be the reincarnation of Catherine the Great. If she knows our situation, she won’t help us with bare hands.”
Among the White Russian people, the princess is even referred to as the incarnation of Catherine the Great.
Of course, considering that Catherine II was criticized as a tyrant for oppressing peasants, it’s quite a curious title. But only looking at her achievements, she is revered as a female monarch who expanded her territory, embodying the image of Catherine II.
A female monarch. For Anastasia, who would face an unstable position due to the civil war, the reclamation of the Eastern Roman Empire’s territory might indeed seem like an enticing offer.
Moreover, there exists an elite army of over a million White Russians, hardened through battles against the Reds.
“Hmmm. But Princess Anastasia is also coming to the throne due to the civil war. Especially as a woman’s body, this could be tempting for establishing legitimacy.”
“What if we revise the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk or hand over territories including Constantinople and the former Byzantine regions?”
“They’ve already eaten up Belarus and are subtly establishing their influence over the east of Ukraine, calling it anarchistic free zones. There won’t be any further treaty modifications.”
They had almost extended their reach into Belarus and dealt over parts of eastern Ukraine to the anarchists.
However, if one investigates deeper, it’s clear that they gave it to the anarchists to break free from British influence, intending to incorporate it later.
Yet even the British Empire is not well off enough to manage the entirety of Ukraine, thus setting up a pro-British government in western Ukraine as a stopgap, and they couldn’t threaten to give up the east.
“Well, that’s the British situation; our France is different. The Kaiser has made such a mess that even we are on the verge of a commune uprising. Or do you think with the current German issue, Atatürk will just keep stalling?”
Unlike the actual history, France was unable to pull out from the Ottoman Empire.
They were thinking they needed to do something about one country, no matter what.
“That would mean offering the territories of the Eastern Roman Empire to Russia. It would be about revising the Treaty of Severus, but what about Greece?”
“Why should we be responsible for their failure? Let’s rather draw Russia in.”
“If Russia, who just finished their civil war, gets involved in external wars again, they must be given appropriate compensation.”
Immediately dealing with the aftereffects of a civil war would keep them busy, so would they accept being thrown into another war?
The Slavic people, who almost drowned due to the Reds, wouldn’t repay the favor by helping out.
Then, compensation must be offered,
Having already provided economic assistance, that part is out of the question.
“Then how about helping with troop transport and including all of Thrace, including Constantinople?”
“Not a bad deal.”
It was decided.
The legitimacy of the Eastern Roman Empire would be upheld by Russia.
Meanwhile, Anton Denikin was in charge of the Caucasus Military District in Southern Russia, essentially responsible for the forces in the Southern Russia region.
The civil war had ended in a White Army victory, and he maintained his position as commander of the Southern Russia collective army, but he had one complaint.
That Pyotr Wrangel under his command was doing better than him.
Here he was, having completely conquered Southern Moscow, threatening the Bolsheviks in Southern Russia.
Yet, his fame seemed to be lesser than that of the Black Baron, and he was quite disgruntled.
What good it was for him to monitor the son of Makhno, who seized Eastern Ukraine from this place.
At that moment, he came across some news that piqued Anton Denikin’s interest.
“Are the British and French trying to pull us into the Ottoman Empire?”
Yes. This is an opportunity.
A chance to offer legitimacy to the Tsarina, the Second Rome!
A chance to restore the pride of the Russians, soiled and scratched by the Bolsheviks!
Who dares to claim the Eastern Roman legacy over a minor country like Greece? No way!
Anton Denikin longed to lead the White Army into Anatolia.
