Chapter 78: Lightning Bill Tacos
Hikari and crew stood on top of a wooden vessel. It was a ship resembling old pirate ships. Originally it even had the skull and bones attached, but the elf thought it wise to remove the flag and replace it with something else. Much to her reluctance, the crew had decided upon a drawing of the elf made by Nona. At least, the image wasn't exactly resembling the elf.
It was a white flag with a drawing similar to something that parents would put on their fridge. This way people wouldn't be certain it was the elf, but at the same time, it would make Nona happy.
How they were able to place a large frigate on the water without being questioned was a missive passed down by their merchant friend and owner of that inn. The man stood on the docs waving at the group before their departure.
Hikari waved back before lifting the anchors of the frigate. She marveled at the large ship. It was one thing seeing it in game, but seeing it in reality brought her a different kind of joy. Incidentally, she'd gotten this from a long pirate quest line. It was pretty early on in the game, so if levels were concerned, the frigate was only around 175.
In those pirate quests, she ended up slaying the pirate king, and the reward was this ship. It served as a mount for her followers during that time, and now, it was serving Hikari's purposes well.
For Amelia to either defeat or convince her sister, they needed to travel between islands. They'd have to go through the tropical islands before arriving at the Misty Isles, and the journey was fraught with danger. If there were sea creatures around level 175, Hikari would need to defend the ship with barriers.
Nona tugged on Hikari's robes as the ship began to move. The little girl looked in worry at the elf. "I've never been on a boat. I'm scared."
Hikari grinned and patted the girl's head. "You needn't worry about it, my dear. Everything will be fine. Simply have trust in this goddess."
The little girl beamed and hugged Hikari. "Goddess! I do trust you."
"Good."
However, Kurayami felt differently. The dragon stood at the edge of the ship, leaning over the side. She appeared nauseous. "Master, I think I am going to vomit."
Hikari quickly saved the day with a soothing spell, and the dragon slumped down, taking a seat against the starboard side.
"Thank you, Master."
Hikari nodded. Although, she found it weird the dragon got motion sickness from the sea and not a carriage. Kurayami had seemed completely fine when they rode on land.
As they traveled further out to sea, the land behind them began to grow more distant, eventually becoming nothing but a black speck on the horizon. This did beg the question for Hikari how big the planet was. The curvature seemed slightly different to that of Earth, but even a slight difference would have massive implications on the entire globe.
Hikari had the idea to summon more maids from her domain. When they appeared on the ship, the maids immediately bowed and awaited orders. Hikari addressed them.
"From today, you all will man the ship, until I say otherwise. There are canons below the deck, and someone must stay on the tower at all times." She showed them a map of the nearby islands, pointing to the closest one with her staff. "For starters, we are traveling here."
The head maid of the group—a beautiful angel—nodded her assent. "It will be done, My Lady."
Hikari allowed them to begin their work. Each of them moved quickly towards their positions. In a way, she feared that her words would force them to work without rest, but at least, they would never truly get tired.
Kai and Nona were both awed by the appearance of several people. They'd never expected that she could just summon a crew from seemingly nowhere.
The image was sort of funny to Hikari. They were a ship crew of maid girls. It was a plot straight out of a gacha game. Each of the maids would be a little collectible with different skins.
Ayase broke the elf from her stupor. "You're not thinking something weird are you?"
"Not at all!"
"Really? Because looking at these maids makes me think of gacha games. Did you just go on an adventure collecting a bunch of wives without anyone knowing?"
"No Master!" The dragon interrupted, pleading with Hikari. "If anyone is to be your first wife, it should be me!"
"I'm not marrying anyone at the moment! Keep your weird thoughts to yourselves! You're going to corrupt these poor children's ears."
Amelia sighed. "If you've not corrupted them already with all of your debasing actions."
Nona raised her hand with an innocent smile. "Nona's not corrupted!"
Their journey into the deep sea continued. The boat rocked by the increasing winds, her bow dipping down only slightly with each wave. The sun had begun to set, and the clear sky gave way to small clouds.
The only thing missing from this voyage was a sea shanty, but Hikari didn't ask the maids to perform. They'd likely perform the whole time without stopping. These diligent workers remained on high alert, examining the surroundings as if danger lurked underneath each wave.
"This is so boring," Ayase said. "I wish we'd be attacked by a sea monster already."
"You're not a fan of sailing on the open ocean?"
"What's the point of it in a fantasy world? The best thing about sailing in such a world is the potential to get attacked by a sea monster and come back with stories. Imagine you visit a tavern, and then you start sharing your stories with a bunch of drunkards."
Hikari looked at the witch with narrowed eyes. "I think you've watched way too many movies. In reality, most sea monsters would probably not attack a vessel like this. If you think about it, aren't monsters also caring about their survival?"
"Yes, but what is this frigate compared to a water dragon?"
Kurayami provided the simplest answer to her question. "No water dragon would be dumb enough to attack this vessel while I am on board. I've been expanding my aura since we entered the ocean. All I've seen approach us thus far are fish. Incidentally, I killed some of them, so that we'll have dinner."
Ayase smiled wryly at the dragon. "I bet you'd eat all of them yourself. I'd not be surprised to learn that you're the sin of gluttony."
"Don't even compare me to those meager existences. The sins of this world are like the dirt under my claws. They're pesky little guys, but they're nothing more than that."
Hikari let the two continue their harmless bickering. As for the elf, she wondered if the fish would taste different from the ones she was used to. With that thought in mind, she gathered everyone to the center of the ship.
The fish were placed in buckets on top of ice. Hikari was amazed the dragon had the foresight to do this. Then again, the dragon was no simple brute. At first, Hikari had thought that, but over time, she came to realize that Kurayami was full of surprises. Hikari simply wished that the dragon would not be so extreme. Killing a bone dragon with one spell was reasonable, but launching a whole river of fire into the ground was absurd.
Hikari focused on the fish instead. They were indeed different than anything she'd eaten before. Their bodies contained vestiges of magic power. Each of their scales seemed to slightly reflect magic. They must've been a school that Kurayami killed because they all looked the same.
In design, they were purple, and they looked similar to swordfish. Their bodies were long and slender. It appeared they'd been killed quickly but without any puncture wounds. Hikari imagined that the dragon suffocated them with a shadow spell.
"These are Lightning Bills," Ayase said. "This is my first time seeing them."
"You know about these fish?" Hikari asked. "Are they edible?"
"Yes, they're edible, My Lady. These fish often swim together in deeper waters, but it's rare people can find them in abundance in an open market. This world doesn't really have the same kind of commercial fishing, and most fish are caught nearer to the shore. Additionally, their scales are a weak magic repellent, and their bodies can produce a small electric charge. If the school is being hunted by a great monster, the fish turn their bills towards the attacker and send out small bolts of lightning."
"I don't care about that," Kurayami said. "I just want to eat them!"
Hikari chuckled at the silly dragon. "Alright, I'll cook them. I probably have plenty of seasonings left over from [Gensuba]."
Ayase grinned knowingly. "The collector spirit is strong with RPG players."
Hikari got to work, summoning a more modern looking stove run on magic power. She gutted, de-boned, and seasoned the fish before cooking it. In the end, she ended up shredding all of the meat to make all of the crew fish tacos.
The dinner ended with a very satisfied crew.
