Chapter 4 - Capital Raid Incident. (1)
Ding ding ding-!
Hearing the noisy bell, Sisilia ran at a tremendous speed, befitting a holder of the Divine Protection of Wind.
“Hurry!”
Then, she spotted guards running ahead.
“……”
When Sisilia suddenly appeared in front of them and stared without a word, the guard was startled and stepped back.
“W-Why are you doing this?”
“Brief me.”
“It’s a small-scale demon invasion! We suspect they infiltrated through the sewers…”
“Thank you.”
Sisilia disappeared with her cape fluttering.
The guard blinked, looking at his comrade beside him.
“What was that just now?”
His comrade replied with a dazed face.
“Wow, she’s really pretty.”
“…Is that what’s important right now?”
Meanwhile, Sisilia, leaving the dumbfounded guards behind, ran on the roofs and looked at a certain place.
Terezia Central Plaza, on top of the cylindrical altar that seemed to pierce the sky.
Centered around a sculpture in the form of an archangel, sacred flames burned in a grayish-white color.
And behind those flames, a crowd of people with worried expressions had gathered.
Those flames were the very symbol that this city was still safe.
No demon could cross those flames. They also served as an alarm system, warning of danger if a demon set foot on Terezia’s land.
The problem was the sacred flames were wavering.
“It’s a small-scale invasion, so why are the flames wavering?”
The question was brief.
Sisilia focused on the front.
A goblin was swinging a club at a guard from a blind spot.
Sisilia increased her speed, kicked off the ground, and charged.
“Be careful.”
Shwing!
The blade cut through the air and passed the goblin’s neck.
The surrounding debris scattered into the sky.
“Lady Sisilia!”
Guards filled with joy crowded around Sisilia.
“What’s the situation?”
“Y-You just dealt with everything.”
“Just this?”
Sisilia tilted her head.
“Oh, Sisilia.”
Not far away, there were Windsor Knights.
They seemed to have just finished as well, with the corpses of demons littering around them.
‘Thank goodness. I’m not late.’
Sisilia looked at the three goblins she had just dispatched with dull eyes.
It was brutal, but she did contribute, so there was no need to be conscious of it, right?
“Where have you been? Haven’t seen you in a while.”
“…I spilled tea on myself and was changing clothes.”
The man walking over nonchalantly with a spear on his shoulder was named Leorick.
He was one of only 7 high-ranking knights in the Windsor Knights.
“Then you should have just rested. There are plenty of people today anyway?”
She would be a fool to fall for that.
If she hadn’t come, he would have definitely said something like, ‘Skipping out, huh?’ or ‘Wow, I, your senior, am working so hard, but the junior is playing around? In my days, you would have been beaten to death for that.’
“I was worried about the people…”
“Aha, you came to finish early and go home again, didn’t you? Really, you live so efficiently.”
Sisilia hurriedly changed the subject.
“You didn’t need to come either, Leorick.”
“If everyone thinks that way and doesn’t come, at least I should. But anyway…”
Leorick scanned the surroundings with sharp eyes.
“Just small fry.”
“Yes.”
Sisilia also found it strange.
The flames weren’t all-powerful.
They couldn’t protect the entire Terezia.
But there was a limit.
They could more than block ‘goblins,’ one of the weakest among demons.
“And they had to invade on the day of the regular meeting.”
Leorick shrugged.
“Well, it’s not like demons being stupid is anything new.”
Sisilia desperately avoided his gaze. She wanted to avoid ‘that’ at all costs.
“Then I’ll get going, so leave the rest to me.”
“…Yes.”
Watching Leorick walk away, Sisilia closed her eyes tightly.
‘In the end, I got stuck with it.’
Usually, the aftermath of these incidents was the most bothersome part.
Because the cause had to be investigated and reports had to be written and submitted.
“Um, um… Lady Sisilia. What should we do?”
‘No choice.’
She couldn’t handle the capital raid incident roughly either.
It was also impossible to throw the work to another knight in order to maintain the concept of a ‘perfectionist beautiful girl Sword Maiden NPC.’
In the end, she had to handle it herself.
“I will investigate the circumstances of the incident. Guards, please patrol for any demons that may be hiding. If you find them, give a signal without hesitation. I will come right away.”
“Yes!”
The guard answered energetically.
The eyes looking at Sisilia, who was only 16 years old, showed unwavering respect.
***
Trudge trudge.
Sisilia walked with her shoulders drooping.
“Our team is on duty again this week? I wish someone would switch shifts.”
“As if that would happen.”
When people came into view, she straightened her shoulders and walked in a perfect posture again.
“Good work!”
“No abnormalities during the shift!”
“Yeah.”
Receiving salutes as she passed by, and once the presence disappeared, her shoulders drooped again.
‘I don’t want to work…’
She really felt how hard it was for a non-perfectionist to act like a perfectionist these days.
‘I want to go home and laze around soon.’
She missed the feeling of a fluffy blanket.
Was this what burnout felt like?
She had been running non-stop for the past 10 years.
Even on weekends, when everyone else rested, she would grab a sword and go to a dungeon to farm.
Hunting only the strongest demons possible.
Training swordsmanship in her spare time, what even is a social life.
Doing that for 10 years, she was slowly getting to the point of not wanting to do anything.
‘Just need to hold on a bit longer.’
According to Sisilia’s estimation, one more year.
In one year, it would be the official launch.
The goal was right in front of her eyes.
When the official launch happens and people are summoned to this unfamiliar world…
A beautiful lady knight appearing like the wind in moments of crisis.
Newbies expressing gratitude! The sense of accomplishment!
‘Alright, let’s keep going with that in mind!’
Sisilia’s passion flared up.
Then, a cool breeze blew between her skirt.
Whoosh-.
Sisilia’s passion died in 3 seconds.
“It’s cold.”
Sisilia was wearing a custom-ordered half-armor.
It was pretty, but being too cold was the downside.
“Let’s just get the work done quickly.”
Sisilia trudged along again.
The destination wasn’t very far.
“…I think they entered through here.”
A huge tunnel-shaped sewer made of stone.
The smell was a bit too much.
And mixed in with that-
‘Traces of mana.’
Standing in the center of the sewer, she drew her sword and pointed it that way.
“Tempest.”
An undeniable wind pressure spurted from the tip of Sisilia’s sword.
The black filth in the sewer was instantly cleared, revealing the bottom.
The traces of mana revealed themselves in a blue light, following Sisilia’s guidance.
They were footprints.
From goblin footprints, at some point, they changed into human footprints.
‘They snuck in.’
Only demons could do that. It was the right answer to order the guards to investigate people.
There was no more business here.
Sisilia lightly stepped out of the sewer.
Using the wind to shake off the smell from her clothes, she climbed to the roof of a nearby building.
After reaching the roof of the tallest building in the vicinity, she speculated where the hidden demon might have gone.
‘The small-scale invasion is a bluff to hide among people.’
‘If they can transform into humans, it would be better to kill a merchant and take over their body.’
‘The fact that they deliberately crawled through the sewers.’
They aren’t aiming for anything grand.
Because even if they take human form, the Windsor Knights could quickly see through it.
Then, what is the purpose of the demon who snuck in?
Sisilia opened her eyes after reaching a conclusion.
“At times like this, the order is to protect the most important thing first.”
Sisilia fell vertically from the tall building.
Her destination was the plaza.
More precisely, the ‘sacred flames.’
***
A man.
There was a man.
“I heard Lady Sisilia defeated the demons.”
“Really, how can she always protect us so quickly?”
The man was looking at something.
The altar.
The gray flames burning there.
As if his soul had been stolen, he stared at it endlessly, rooted like a tree.
“Oh? It’s Lady Sisilia.”
“It’s the Sword Maiden!”
The man reached out his hand.
But as if blocked by something, he couldn’t grasp the flames.
So close.
He could only look.
He could neither touch nor hold.
These flames were clearly foreign.
Anger.
The man felt anger.
The anger of not being able to do what he wanted.
The anger that comes from witnessing injustice.
If only, if only this didn’t exist.
The world would surely be a little more beautiful.
“Excuse me.”
He didn’t want this moment to be disturbed.
It was a clear violation. He had the right to look at these flames.
But the frail woman’s voice contained an irresistible force.
“What is it?”
“What color does it look to you?”
The man looked at the flames again. He answered as if it was obvious.
“Gray.”
Shwing-.
At the same time, Sisilia’s sword was drawn.
The man turned his head to the right at the cold sensation on his neck.
Slash-.
Naturally, his neck was cut by the sword.
Crimson blood flowed down, staining the blade.
The man didn’t even blink as if he felt no pain.
“How did you know?”
“Color blindness is a typical characteristic of demons.”
“I see.”
“You don’t seem to have any regrets.”
“Because I’ve achieved what I wanted.”
“What was it that you wanted?”
“It was to see these flames. I wanted to witness this unreasonable existence that blocks us at least once.”
“Thank you for your testimony.”
Crunch-!
The man’s head was cleanly cut off.
The people gathered in the plaza woke up from a breathtaking silence.
Sisilia was lost in thought.
‘Something doesn’t feel right.’
A demon that didn’t seem very strong.
There was no denying that he was the culprit behind this incident.
But why?
He brought death upon himself just to see the flames?
Demons are a race with a strong attachment to life.
They wouldn’t throw away their lives for such curiosity.
“Kyaaaaaah-!”
A sharp scream assaults the ears.
Sisilia opened her eyes wide and found the culprit.
The head of the demon she had just cut off had transformed into an awl and was shooting towards a young child.
‘Too late.’
Even if she had gone to stop it now, the demon would have been one step faster.
‘In that case.’
Sisilia summoned the wind.
The small body of the young child was swept away by the wind.
Tap-.
Sisilia kicked off the ground and caught the child in her arms.
At the same time, she grabbed the awl with her hand and spoke softly.
“Shatter.”
Whoosh!
The wind instantly shredded the awl.
The demon, crushed to almost particle level, could no longer be traced.
“Lina!”
The child’s parents came running.
Sisilia carefully handed the child over.
“Really, really thank you. Lady Sisilia.”
The child’s parents expressed their gratitude with tears in their eyes.
‘That was close…’
It was truly a precarious situation. If she had been even a little late, the child would have died.
Then there would be disciplinary action… All the reputation she had built up…
Sisilia let out a sigh of relief.
Clap clap.
She turned her head at the sound of someone’s applause.
It was someone she knew.
A handsome blond man.
Also a person she didn’t particularly want to face.
“Excellent, Sisilia.”
Edward Windsor, the vice-captain of the Windsor Knights.
“Your insight in detecting demons. The way you handle them. Everything is perfect and beautiful.”
Sisilia bowed her head slightly.
“It’s been a while.”
“Haha, it has. About a year?”
Edward approached Sisilia with a gentle smile.
“Is the commander doing well?”
Vice-Captain Edward had a good reputation.
Handsome looks, kind smile, thoughtfulness.
Perhaps Knight Commander Cairon was the only one who considered him a person to take caution around.
“Yes.”
“By the way, a commotion right after returning. The capital is the same as always. Seems perfect, yet careless.”
Sisilia was looking at the ground.
More precisely, at Edward’s feet.
There was something like sticky mud on his boots.
‘He went to the sewers. Judging by the hardened state, about 10 minutes ago.’
She raised her head again.
Edward, about a head taller than Sisilia, was looking down at her.
Edward reached out and lifted Sisilia’s chin.
Sisilia looked at Edward with dry eyes, not moving an inch.
“Just like you, who seem to be suspecting me even in this situation.”
It seemed her relationship wouldn’t be very good with the next knight commander candidate.
…Life.
