I Became a Police Officer in a Superhero Genre

Chapter 61 - The Police in This World Vowed to Definitely Catch the Criminal(10)

Park Jung-hoon moved his fingers as he saw the clock on the wall pointing to 1 AM.

The fingers tapping on the high-quality wooden desk shook with an irregular and nervous rhythm, as if reflecting his current state of mind.

The man had taken off the white robe he usually wore and was in a suit, but-

Park Jung-hoon wearing that ridiculous robe in front of the members of the Chosen Ones was an act for image-making.

But there was no one in the representative’s office where he was now.

The secretary who always stood by his side had already been sent to the ‘scene’ where things were happening.

The secretary had a fiery temper, but was someone who worked quickly and followed his words well, so he usually didn’t send her far away in situations like this.

She was someone who could optimally buy time with her ability, and if needed, could even serve as a meat shield.

But Park Jung-hoon had sent that secretary to the scene. Because that ‘person’ had said so.

He told me how to flip over the mask of a civic group like this and build up power behind the scenes, and taught me in detail how to gather superpower users, but-

Park Jung-hoon couldn’t believe that being whose thoughts he just couldn’t understand.

His abilities were certainly outstanding. He helped Park Jung-hoon establish connections in the political world.

He showed very competent aspects by providing methods for gathering people, ways to recruit individuals Park Jung-hoon called talented, and financial support, but-

More than that competence, Park Jung-hoon couldn’t understand for what purpose the Coordinator was helping him.

With the Coordinator’s abilities, he wouldn’t need to teach methods as a coordinator, and could achieve whatever he wanted, so it was questionable why he was doing this, but-

Now, without even a chance to resolve those doubts, the relationship with the Coordinator was completely cut off.

Park Jung-hoon muttered while grinding his teeth in anxiety at the sudden notification that came in the middle of the night while continuing the business relationship well.

“To cut off contact at a time like this. That monster. What on earth is he thinking.”

Park Jung-hoon took out his phone. The message displayed on the screen was just one line:

‘With this, no further coordinating will be necessary.’ This short message meant the end of the business relationship between Park Jung-hoon and the one who called himself the Coordinator.

All records of working with the Coordinator disappeared like a dream of one night, and even the data he had saved separately vanished somehow, using some unknown method.

Park Jung-hoon felt uneasy, but in fact, the Chosen Ones wouldn’t have much of a problem even without that Coordinator now.

Park Jung-hoon’s forces had already become solid and powerful enough not to collapse just because one Coordinator was gone, and-

The groundwork for his plan to take over this country was all laid out. So he even thought it was fortunate, as he had been thinking he should cut ties with that suspicious being himself.

But that’s only when there are no incidents happening now.

It’s the biggest crisis the Chosen Ones have faced since their creation. And it’s because of that Coordinator’s schemes!

“Detective Lee Mun-su… I should have killed him from the start…”

Park Jung-hoon ground his teeth as he looked at the email reporting on the situation at the junkyard.

Detective Lee Mun-su. Currently a detective so well-known domestically that even children may have heard of him, even if they don’t know the name of the police commissioner.

The Coordinator said that if this person was brought in, it would be a great advantage to his plan, and with his ability, he could definitely bind him by taking hostages.

But Park Jung-hoon couldn’t believe such words from the Coordinator.

That’s because to Park Jung-hoon, Lee Mun-su didn’t seem like someone who could be bound by hostages or such things.

Even before gaining his ability, Park Jung-hoon had done various things, and the greatest skill he learned through that was the ability to distinguish between people who can be messed with and those who can’t.

There are people who get scared and meekly pay the ransom when taken hostage and kidnapped, while-

On the other hand, there are people who vow to definitely catch and kill the kidnappers no matter what humiliation they suffer. To Park Jung-hoon, Lee Mun-su seemed to belong to the latter category.

When he happened to discover him while trying to clean up a rat that was spying on the Chosen Ones, and when he directly faced Detective Lee Mun-su following the Coordinator’s advice, that thought became even more certain.

He didn’t think a person’s eyes could shine so brightly with just hostility when they could barely walk or use their hands.

No matter what lies he told, no matter how he tried to lure him by saying he’d heal him with his passing-on ability, this kind of person would absolutely never cooperate.

The Coordinator babbled that he should be brought in as an ally somehow, but Park Jung-hoon was already convinced that he had to kill him for himself to succeed.

While putting a leash on him using his ability as the Coordinator said, he made plans to kill Detective Lee Mun-su afterwards, but-

This son of a bitch. Detective Lee Mun-su somehow found Dokkaebi’s younger sister who was hidden in the junkyard disguised as an orphanage in the ecology park.

That Lee Mun-su bastard not only brought in Dokkaebi as an ally, who the Coordinator said was the only one who could break his invincible ability-

He gathered with those rat bastards who had been stirring up the Chosen Ones and disappeared.

For the Coordinator bastard to cut ties in a situation like this after telling him to bring in that Detective Lee Mun-su!

Did the Coordinator have a change of heart, or was this whole situation part of that strange person’s plan all along?

It can’t be known for now, but one thing is certain – there’s a need to clean up Detective Lee Mun-su and those rat bastards as soon as possible.

What should be done? Park Jung-hoon took a deep breath and swallowed the rising anger. He thought calmly while changing the rhythm of his fingers tapping on the table to a steady beat.

First of all, since he passed on Detective Lee Mun-su’s injuries to his acquaintance with his passing-on ability, there’s no chance of an official investigation starting. If that happens, his future plans won’t be derailed.

From what he found out, the person who received the injuries was also a female student he cared for and looked after.

Detective Lee Mun-su would also know that he’s the only one who can save that female student, so he won’t be able to provoke him unnecessarily.

As proof, Detective Lee Mun-su knows this, so he hasn’t taken any action even after finding out what he’s been doing behind the scenes at the junkyard.

But because of that, Park Jung-hoon was puzzled by the movements that seemed to be trying to stab him in the back by rallying Dokkaebi and those rat bastards in such a situation.

No matter how strong Dokkaebi is, he’s not as strong as New Hope, so he can’t face all the supervillains Park Jung-hoon has gathered in the Chosen Ones.

On top of that, to take him down, they’d have to get past all the ordinary citizens and hidden powerhouses gathered under the nonsense he’s spouting about improving the human rights of superpower users.

Would he cross that line just to arrest one person like himself? Dokkaebi, whose younger sister was kidnapped, is likely to rush in without thinking, but Detective Lee Mun-su wouldn’t allow that.

What exactly is Detective Lee Mun-su plotting?

Researcher Yoo Nari has no combat ability, and the unidentified woman in the New Hope cosplay looks strong but not as much as that New Hope.

If we fight head-on we’d win, but- He decided to just quietly hole up in the building instead of fighting.

The variable that could come into play is that the hero New Hope, whom everyone in the Chosen Ones fears, is not showing up.

That hero hasn’t been seen for the past few days for some reason. Of course, he doesn’t think New Hope died somewhere.

Sometimes when he seems to disappear like this, it’s later revealed that he was catching guys hidden in the shadows.

With his ability he might be able to beat even New Hope, but Park Jung-hoon remembered what the Coordinator had said. That he would definitely lose if he fought New Hope.

At this point he doesn’t fully trust everything the Coordinator said, but Park Jung-hoon had to acknowledge his words.

The more he saw New Hope’s activities, the more he couldn’t shake the feeling that that tights-wearing pervert was something beyond common sense.

That’s why Park Jung-hoon tried to find out New Hope’s identity and weaknesses while gathering those who hated that hero, but everyone must know.

No matter how many gather, they won’t be able to defeat the hero.

“…So I was hoping the person Detective Lee Mun-su’s injury was passed to would be New Hope…”

But such luck wouldn’t come easily. Park Jung-hoon sighed.

He concluded that no matter how much he pondered here, he couldn’t figure out what Detective Lee Mun-su was thinking, but as long as he quietly hid here, there was nothing he could do.

Should I refrain from official activities for a while just in case? While Park Jung-hoon was looking up at the sky without even a single star or moon visible, brushing up his hair-

Suddenly a call came to his phone. An unfamiliar number. He didn’t know when it was saved, but that number was saved in Park Jung-hoon’s phone under the bizarre name ‘Special Investigation Team 1 Deputy Leader’.

Park Jung-hoon tried to think of who could have done this, and realized it could only be himself, the secretary, or that Coordinator guy.

Then does that mean the Coordinator anticipated that this person would call someday?

Park Jung-hoon slowly moved to answer the phone. And the voice heard from the other end was-

“[Hey you shitty pigeon bastard. This is Lee Mun-su from Gangdong-gu Special Investigation Team 1. I’ll make you an offer that a fucking bastard like you can’t dare refuse.]”

It was Detective Lee Mun-su’s voice.

To think he’d contact me directly. Park Jung-hoon kept thinking about what he was planning while listening to his insulting words.

But he couldn’t figure it out. An offer I can’t refuse? Is there such a thing in this situation?

He thought he should refuse no matter what was said, but-

“[New Hope. Don’t you want to know who that guy is? You guys are fucking terrified of him. I’ll tell you his face and name, so you respond to my deal.]”

“[I’ll give you until 2 o’clock generously to come to the address I sent. Just for reference, if you don’t come by 2, I’m going to say fuck it all and just hand this case over to the police.]”

“[The hostage? Well, yeah. I held back thinking I should do my duty as a police officer to some extent, but I’d rather take off my uniform later and fuck you over than be pushed around by a bastard like you. So come or not, it’s up to you.]”

With a final “This is the last deal”, the call ended.

Park Jung-hoon sensed that the voice he heard over the phone wasn’t simply bravado or lies. No, it might not be sincere, but at least the determination in that voice was felt.

Then what should he do? Park Jung-hoon continued thinking, trying to find a rational answer somehow.

Detective Lee Mun-su is trying to draw him out now. What will await if he moves as this man says?

Is New Hope waiting at the address he sent? No, he said he’d reveal New Hope’s identity, so would New Hope help?

It could just be a lie. But it’s famous among supervillains that Detective Lee Mun-su is the detective with the most points of contact with New Hope. He might really know.

What parts are lies, and what are his intentions?

Amidst the questions swirling in his head, Park Jung-hoon stopped thinking.

Whatever he’s plotting, Detective Lee Mun-su and himself are currently in a standoff. They’re both holding each other’s leashes, but instead of watching each other, they’re trying to kill each other.

Then the law is to kill first before being killed.

Even if he really has New Hope behind him, if the person trying to kill is not New Hope but Detective Lee Mun-su, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

And if there’s a deal he wants to make even while revealing New Hope’s identity- He can get what he wants and then kill him.

New Hope’s identity is an appetizing bait worth moving for even knowing it’s a trap, but to Park Jung-hoon, the bait of a chance to kill Detective Lee Mun-su seemed even more appetizing.

“- Get people ready. The goal is to buy time fighting New Hope. Let’s go with tough and persistent guys. Soon, it will be our time.”

“Yes.”

So he decided to go along with Lee Mun-su’s scheme. He smiled, thinking of Detective Lee Mun-su’s despairing face when he realizes his plan has failed in the end.

…..
….
..

Park Jung-hoon arrived at the place Detective Lee Mun-su had told him, leading his people.

The abandoned house a bit away from downtown Seoul was famous as a haunted house where ghosts appear, but he didn’t care about such things.

People getting out of 4 vehicles. The headlights shine brightly, illuminating Detective Lee Mun-su standing in front.

Detective Lee Mun-su narrowed his brows at the bright light, but his face was brimming with killing intent like a ferocious beast.

Without his usual coat, just wearing a long-sleeved t-shirt and jeans. He stood alone proudly in the cold forest where white breath could be seen.

“You called, Detective? Dressed like that in this cold weather, you’ll catch a cold?”

“Cut the crap that doesn’t suit you. Let’s get to the point.”

He approached while drinking a beverage he had brought from somewhere. Detective Lee Mun-su put his hands in his pockets and said with a fierce face:

“I’ll tell you New Hope’s identity. Honestly, I don’t like that kid.”

“The price?”

“The injury passed on to my acquaintance. Return it back to me.”

At Detective Lee Mun-su’s words, Park Jung-hoon burst out laughing, “Ha!” and white smoke shot out of his mouth at the same time.

As expected, he had lied. Simply to lure him here.

Was his desire to take back the injury passed to his acquaintance that desperate?

The supervillains standing around Park Jung-hoon like bodyguards also start to mock him.

Even the famous Detective Lee Mun-su was just a powerless ordinary human, and could do nothing in front of them who had superpowers – just a pitiful and base human.

Facing this directly now, he felt pathetic for having been wary of him until now, but- it didn’t change the fact that he was someone who needed to be killed here.

Instead, Park Jung-hoon decided to show some mercy to this powerless person.

“Alright. I accept the deal. Then to show my trust first, I’ll return the injuries to you.”

He’s going to die anyway. It’s good to kill him after seeing him writhe in pain. Or return it and then pass it on to someone else again, make him fall into despair and then kill him.

Park Jung-hoon had a pleasant deliberation on how to kill this man.

He let out a sigh with smoke and placed his hand on Detective Lee Mun-su’s head.

Returning the injury he had passed on was very simple with his ability. As he exerted his power, Detective Lee Mun-su started to contort his face in pain.

Originally his right hand had been crushed so badly it was difficult to look at with the naked eye.

As the passed on injury returns, he must be feeling that pain from when he was injured again. It would be pain unbearable for an ordinary person.

But his mental fortitude to only contort his expression in front of such pain was quite amazing, but that was all.

“Now then, can you tell me who New Hope is?”

“- You get it? Idiot, you know I called you here to fish you in anyway.”

“That’s true.”

Park Jung-hoon decided to give up on unnecessary honorifics and talk honestly. He lightly pushed Detective Lee Mun-su.

He collapsed to the ground, unable to withstand even that light impact. Blood was trickling down his legs, and his right arm was in a meatball-like state.

Admiring how well he had been standing, he pulled out a knife from his pocket.

Park Jung-hoon originally thought it would be good if he could find out New Hope’s identity, and if not, it was enough to kill him.

The bait of New Hope was very attractive and impossible to refuse, but the opportunity to deal with this man was equally hard to give up.

He couldn’t deny that it was enjoyable to interfere by killing the man that the Coordinator who had unilaterally cut off contact wanted so badly to bring in as an ally- but that’s not for this man to know.

“I knew it was a lie to lure me out anyway. What are you planning now? Waiting for Dokkaebi and those rat bastards to come save you? Or waiting for the police to raid the building with the evidence you gathered?”

“Whatever it is, it won’t work, you bastard. Even Dokkaebi can’t do anything against the guys here. They’re the real deal. And even if the police raid our office, there’s nothing they can get?”

“Whatever comes out, it can all be pinned on that stupid secretary bitch and a few brainless idiots. You think I bought the building in that bitch’s name for nothing?”

Park Jung-hoon sneered while tapping Detective Lee Mun-su’s head.

He glared at him with eyes that would bite him to death if they could, but what could a powerless human do?

Even if he did do something, any attacks aimed at Park Jung-hoon himself would all be passed on to Detective Lee Mun-su’s acquaintance, but-

Park Jung-hoon giggled and pulled out a knife. This time there’s no need to waste time putting on a shitty act listening to that damn Coordinator’s words.

He’ll kill him here. That’s all Park Jung-hoon intended to do.

“Any last words?”

“…You son of a bitch. You spouted all that crap about human rights with that kind of face. How did you put up with it.”

Suddenly Lee Mun-su speaks about the Chosen Ones. Was this human still concerned about that kind of thing even at a time like this?

Park Jung-hoon thought he lived such a tiring life, but decided to kindly answer the soon-to-be-dead man:

“Why can’t I put up with it~ If I just pretend to understand and babble, they give me their livers and gallbladders. And I care in my own way? I have to take care of the guys who’ll help me kill all the interfering bastards.”

It would be good to frame it as if he was killed by an extreme anti-superpower discriminator as he had thought before after killing Detective Lee Mun-su.

And using that as an excuse to provoke the superpower users belonging to the Chosen Ones would help his plan.

Since there are records of him participating in events and activities as part of the Chosen Ones, it would be even easier to frame.

Stupid bastard. Just as Park Jung-hoon was about to raise the knife to slash this man to death-

Suddenly Detective Lee Mun-su spoke in a calm voice instead of the pained voice he had been using until now, as if chewing out his words.

In a completely different voice, that is.

“- Isn’t this enough, though not as much as needed? Mr. Kim. They’ve confessed to intending to commit evil acts, so this should be sufficient as evidence.”

Lee Mun-su speaking while looking at someone behind Park Jung-hoon. Park Jung-hoon laughed, wondering if this human had gone mad facing death.

“What the hell is this crazy bastard-”

He was about to say nonsense. But Park Jung-hoon finally realized the sense of dissonance about the Lee Mun-su in front of him.

This cold weather. Unlike Park Jung-hoon in his thick coat, Lee Mun-su in just a long t-shirt was not exhaling any white smoke at all.

Even just breathing should produce smoke from the mouth, as if he wasn’t breathing. And with multiple vehicle headlights shining from behind, neither he nor Lee Mun-su had shadows.

What on earth?

“Eolssu!”

Right after a sound like a martial arts shout, something pierced through Park Jung-hoon’s shoulder. Pain. Agony. Hurt.

He was shocked by the sensation he hadn’t felt for a long time since awakening his superpower, but-

Strangely, even though he was feeling the pain ‘himself’ right now, his head was in a numb state as if watching a picture or video of ‘someone else’ in pain. As if ‘entranced’ by something.

What is happening? In his confused state, he suddenly felt dizziness as if the world was shaking.

Then he saw the man in a Hahoetal mask who had stabbed a knife into his shoulder somehow standing in front of him.

“This is punishment for the evil deeds done to my younger sister! The rest of the judgment, Mr. Kim. I’ll leave it to you.”

Dokkaebi! His superpower is magic! That’s right! Surely a superpower that deceives human senses!

Was the Coordinator’s words that Dokkaebi could nullify his ability true?!

Park Jung-hoon was shocked and tried to order his companions behind him to deal with him, but the people who came with him were nowhere to be seen.

Explosions and screams heard from far away at the edge of the forest. Flames. In the midst of chaos that he couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed until now-

Someone punched Park Jung-hoon in the jaw.

“Gyaak?!”

The sensation of his jaw shaking and head spinning. Unfamiliar and even frightening due to not having felt pain and agony for so long, Park Jung-hoon trembled and looked to see who had hit him.

There stood Detective Lee Mun-su, with his left hand clenched into a fist instead of his crushed right hand, looking down at him as if to kill him.

“Park Jung-hoon. On charges of fraud, assaulting a public official, attempted murder, and various other shitty misdeeds! On February XX, 2022! At 2 AM I’m placing you under emergency arrest! Fuck your lawyer! Don’t make excuses! Fuck you, you son of a bitch!”

Detective Lee Mun-su swung his fist at Park Jung-hoon again. Park Jung-hoon gritted his teeth and charged at him.
