I Became a Police Officer in a Superhero Genre

Chapter 35 - Even in This World, Police Chase Criminals(3)

Yoo Na-ri said she could make the same drug based on the superpower neutralizing drug that remained in the syringe I had previously given to the doctor.

If her words are true – just thinking about it for a moment, how many benefits could we gain?
We could stabilize the current unstable society with rampant superpower crimes, or at least it could become a trump card for detectives to use when dealing with superpower users.

But if it takes 8 years – let’s see. You could go to the military and a president could change with time to spare?

“I’ll die before that.”

If she really can make it, I want to ask her to make it somehow, but considering the time needed until it’s made, there’s a high chance I’ll die before it’s completed. My head hurts.

Thinking calmly, even the claim that she can make it is just Yoo Na-ri’s assertion, and there’s no certainty, and even if the drug is made, it’s questionable whether it will actually be effective.

Even if it miraculously works, would Sai let her make it? Can it be mass-produced?

No, throw away all those questions above! No matter how much of a genius she is, there’s no way she can make drugs using pebbles on bare ground.

Simply put, there’s no money. This young lady is a fresh graduate. I’m a poor policeman. Even if I try to help somehow, a speck of dust is still just a speck no matter how much you gather.

In movies, there are super geniuses who make new drugs and viruses and such at home, but if you look closely, things like beakers and scientific tools exist in that genius’s house as if it’s natural.

But even if you somehow bought an alcohol lamp or beaker cheaply online, where the fuck are you going to get reagents and such?

The 8 years she’s talking about is clearly not just the time needed to make the drug, but the time needed to prepare the necessary facilities and tools.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like a chicken rib. What a damn life. Taking away hope the moment I held it.

Still, I can’t just throw this away saying it’s completely inedible. I asked Yoo Na-ri:

“So what did you say you needed?”

“Th-That drug. If I just had a little more of it, I could definitely make it?”

Yoo Na-mi says the amount of drug left in that syringe would be enough. She seemed to be looking for the syringe I used this time, but what can I do about this? I already threw it away.

If I had known this would happen, I wouldn’t have thrown it away. I frowned while letting out a sigh.

“I already threw it away. I just tossed it in one of the ambulances that came to the scene, so it’s probably buried in some hospital’s medical waste by now. We won’t be able to find it. So if it’s not there? Can’t you make the drug?”

“Oh- then it’s fine. If I have the blood of someone who was injected with the drug, that would work, and I’ve already gotten that. The reason I asked you was to check if there was any drug left and also to see if the person I picked was really injected with that drug.”

?

The woman who said she had obtained a blood sample was smiling with an almost manic look.

As far as I know, the only people who were injected with that drug are Mina and Justice bastard, and there’s no possibility she extracted blood from Mina, so that means she got blood from Justice.

He’s currently receiving treatment in the hospital, but he’s tied up so he can’t move a finger and is under 24-hour surveillance, yet she extracted a blood sample from him?

I kept my mouth shut for now to hear more about what this woman was babbling about.

“If I have a sample of that drug, I can not only reproduce it but also unravel the secrets of superpower users and superpowers! According to my research, the difference between the superpower awakening drug and the neutralizing drug isn’t that big!”

“This time I got some additional superpower awakening drug from a friend working in the back, so if I research a bit more- Ah.”

What nonsense is this crazy woman spouting in front of a police officer? Currently, the treatment of the superpower awakening drug is considered such a dangerous substance that just possessing it for personal purposes can result in imprisonment.

From the start, the danger of superpower users is that they cause tremendous damage even when awakening insignificant superpowers with just one dose. No matter how stupid the government is, they can’t just leave such a drug alone.

So when drug dealing is confirmed, even police don’t need warrants to arrest suspects, and using not just tools but even guns is exceptionally allowed.

So…… She’s the doctor’s student, and she’s admitting to the charges, so let’s go easy on her and arrest her without breaking bones. I raised the handcuffs.

I sincerely tried to arrest this criminal researcher, but the promise of being able to make the superpower neutralizing drug was so attractive that I couldn’t bring myself to arrest her.

The reason is that if she, who knows about the superpower neutralizing drug, gets caught, I don’t know what will happen afterwards.

Of course, this isn’t some bullshit like “this is how the original work should go, so let’s leave it”. I’m not holding expectations for the neutralizing drug she mentioned either.

The reason I’m doing this is because if Yoo Na-ri gets caught by my hands, she will of course try to say everything she knows to get a reduced sentence somehow.

What she knows is information that the police would want to know even if they make a deal for her sentence. Yoo Na-ri probably knows that much too.

And if things continue as I expect – Sai will find out about Yoo Na-ri faster, and the fucking villain Over Mind will appear sooner.

I don’t think things in the world will only turn out badly like that, but if I chew over my experiences so far, things will definitely turn out badly. For sure.

Yeah, let’s think positively. It’s okay not to arrest her.
When did I become a paragon of justice who had to lock up everyone I saw committing crimes? If I were a paragon of justice, I wouldn’t be in this pathetic state.

And if I let her off like this, maybe later Yoo Na-ri will suddenly have an incredible epiphany and make the superpower neutralizing drug within a month?

You say that’s not possible? Fuck off.

“Maybe I should get an exorcism.”

No matter how much I think about it these days, things getting tangled up must be because something’s attached to me. No, if I don’t think like this, I can’t live because it’s too hard.

With such thoughts, I trudged along chewing nicotine gum. Since tracking the stench terror incident, which was my original purpose, had become impossible anyway, I was going to return to the station.

“Deputy Chief, you were here? Are you done investigating the case?”

Sai appeared in front of me. I was about to nod and say let’s go back to the station now, but suddenly one thing came to mind.

“If there’s a church near us, let’s go there”

“Ch-church? Is it for the case investigation?”

I vaguely said it was for the case investigation to Sai who was asking why we were going there of all places, and headed towards Sai’s parking lot with her.

Of course, she would know that this is just me trying to play hooky. She might even be reading my mind right now.

But she probably can’t read that I’m trying to see how she’ll react to seeing a cross.

Honestly, she’s scarier than demons or ghosts. Praying that she’ll at least attain enlightenment in front of the cross, I headed to the church with Sai.

Even if she doesn’t really attain enlightenment, if she confesses her sins and asks God for forgiveness, anything should get better. That’s what I thought.

Surely, that’s how it should have been, but……

“Catch and kill him!!”

“Kill, my ass!!!”

Bam! I gritted my teeth as I sent the jaw flying of the bastard rushing at me. I wanted to catch my breath for a moment, but there was no time to think about anything else with a bastard charging at me with a knife.

How did it come to this? I rolled my eyes to look behind. I saw people trembling.

Superpower awakeners with appearances that remind one of demonic imagery at a glance, such as having ram’s horns or eyes dyed pitch black.

And on the contrary, in front of me are people from the church rushing at me gnashing their teeth saying they’ll tear me to pieces right now.

Surely when I first came to this church, it was a place that exuded a peaceful and quiet atmosphere no different from other churches.

The reason I chose and entered this church wasn’t for any particular reason, but simply because it was the closest one nearby and had a cross sign.

I didn’t know this area well, and it was decently sized, so I thought it wouldn’t be a weird place, and entered the church.

Unfortunately, Sai was fine even in front of the cross. I sat in the chapel and prayed to Jesus or God or whoever deity to please save me.

But suddenly, how should I put it. What you might call a detective’s intuition loudly alerted me that something was in this church in that situation.

I wanted to just ignore it, but due to the intuition that felt unpleasantly strong, I quietly slipped out of the chapel and looked around, and heard the sound of people crying from a corner of the church building’s corridor.

When I looked around to check what the sound was, there was a path leading underground, and there were those people along with an operating table.

Moreover, there were guys with North Four tattoos, which the Food Ghost bastard belonged to, guarding that basement. What happened next doesn’t need explanation, right?

Could this be Sai’s doing too? Yeah, come to think of it, it was Sai who told me there was a church nearby. It was clear that she had planned something again and brought me to the church.

Otherwise this situation doesn’t make sense. What are the chances that when I just came to pray at a neighborhood church, it happens to be a workshop for North Four bastards playing with people?
I thought this must surely be Sai’s scheme. However.

“Deputy Chief! I really hate to say this, but! It seems like incidents follow you wherever you go, Deputy Chief!”

Sai shouted while beating down a guy rushing at her with a baton. Her face looked genuinely speechless at the current situation. Or maybe she was having too much fun to know what to do.

Okay, looking at that expression and face, it seems this incident isn’t Sai’s doing, but purely my bad luck. Fuck.

I want to curse the world, but right now the guys who were doing human trafficking under the guise of a church are rushing at us trying to tear us to pieces.

It was good that we rescued the captured people and joined up with Sai, and escaped from the basement to reach the ground floor, but most of the people in this crazy church seem to be involved in human trafficking and keep swarming at us non-stop.

At this rate, Sai might be fine but me and the victims will inevitably be in danger. The situation is unfolding so urgently that we can’t even request support on our phones.

Think. Sai won’t die in a place like this, and while it’s not good for me, as long as I have Sai’s interest, I can’t die even if I want to in a place like this. But these victims? They’ll probably die.

I gritted my teeth and thought. There are no superpower users visible among the people rushing at us, and fortunately, we’re close to the entrance now and the path is narrow, so although the North Four have greater numbers, they can’t all rush in at once.

If so- there’s only one thing to do.

“Hey. Sai. You take the victims and escape from here. I’ll buy time.”

“What? Deputy Chief, if you face them alone, you’ll die!”

“I won’t die. The path is narrow so not many can come. If time just passes like this, we’ll die of exhaustion first. We need to call for support before that.”

More precisely, I’ll die, but. As I spoke and kicked away another guy, Sai said in a resolute voice:

“…I’ll definitely come back.”

I could hear Sai’s voice saying that, but I could feel Sai’s eyes looking at me in the dark interior.

I saw in the corner of my vision that below her eyes glowing blue again, the corners of her mouth were raised as if she was extremely pleased, but I ignored it and gathered my strength to push back the guys rushing at me.

And Sai didn’t miss that momentary timing and ran out the door with the victims.

“Fuck! We can’t let those bastards escape! Quickly kill this bastard first!”

“Come at me, you fuckers!!”

I beat down another guy rushing at me, and picked up an iron pipe rolling on the floor and swung it.

There was a clang! sound of impact, and honestly it hurt a bit. It was natural to be in pain since I hadn’t even recovered from being beaten by Justice bastard a few days ago and I had burn gauze on my stomach.

It’s clearly a dangerous situation, but strangely enough. I felt an odd sense of relief in this situation where gangster bastards were pouring in like a flood.

It seemed to be because the guys trying to kill me now weren’t superpower users who could break concrete, but just simple gangsters.

Before being dragged into the Special Investigation Team, I used to get stabbed and cause a ruckus with these kinds of gangsters every day. Now I’m nostalgic for those times. They say human life is funny and difficult, and that’s exactly right.

“Hey, this crazy bastard is smiling in this situation.”

“Isn’t he a lunatic…!”

“Did all the cops lose their minds because the media’s been praising one of them lately?”

“You fuckers, you’d understand if you were in my situation. Damn bastards.”

Wham! While I was talking, I dodge and smash the head of a bastard thrusting a spear from who knows where. Yeah, if it continues like this, it’s fine. I can hold out.

As long as Sai doesn’t go crazy and try to eliminate the victims in the middle of the city and check how long I can fight… support will arrive soon.

… She really won’t do that, right? No way, that guy is fully capable of calling for support late just to see me suffer-

“Ah fuck!”

As I was worrying that Sai might not call for support to watch me suffer. I cursed as a blade grazed my head and kicked away the guy who lunged at me.
The gangster made an “Oof!” sound and fell face down on the floor. I counted the guys lying on the floor and. Including the one who just fell, about 20 people had been taken down by me.

The North Four bastards must have thought this wasn’t right either, as their attacks stopped, and I could see them starting to hesitate as if frightened. It was a good situation. At least it means I can buy time to recover stamina.

Thinking that, I smiled showing my teeth to show off that I was fine. But, suddenly, the atmosphere among the guys changed.

Thud! Thud!

“Whoa, he’s here!”

“You monster! Time to earn your keep!!”

As tremors were felt on the ground, the gangsters’ morale started to rise again.

The gangsters cheered and started to make way, and someone came towards me going thud! thud! from beyond the darkness.

The cheering gangsters and the strangely heavy footsteps. This could only mean one thing. A superpower user. A superpower user of the type with big physical changes and strong power was coming.

“Fuuuck……”

I said it was good that there were no superpower users visible, but fuck, as soon as I had that thought one shows his face.

Even as I felt the strength draining from my body, my eyes looked at the something approaching. A huge height that made the ceiling feel very low, a giant upper body, and three pairs of arms as thick as tree trunks.

“Damn it, another shitty situation……”

A man who looked like he popped out of a comic appeared cursing, and then our eyes met. Fierce eyes that looked like they could have killed a dozen people.

Meeting those bloodshot eyes, I did calculations in my head. The narrow corridor and large build could conversely be uncomfortable in a place like this.

If I play it right, I might be able to escape from here – the problem is if this giant’s superpower isn’t just limited to having three pairs of arms.

What a fucking life. As I was gritting my teeth and gripping the handcuffs to use as brass knuckles while slowly catching my breath, the giant spoke.

“…Damn it. I can’t do it. No matter how much of a bastard I am, how could I kill someone like this, fuck.”

The giant muttered that and suddenly turned his body to swing his fists at the North Four guys who were on his side. The North Four guys were shocked by their ally’s sudden attack and fell down.

Gangsters falling like autumn rice plants to the giant’s three pairs of arms. As I was blankly watching the sudden change in the situation, a gangster who luckily avoided the giant’s fists by falling to the ground shouted:

“You! You monster bastard! Are you okay with whatever happens to your family?!”

“Yeah! I’m doing this to save my family! Because there’s someone here who will definitely save our family from bastards like you!!”

The giant said that and lifted the guy who was lying on the ground high, then threw him down on the floor.

The giant, no, Mr. Giant said that while looking at me, and those eyes conveyed desperation without needing words.

…I get it, damn it. I understand the situation so I have to work.

I rushed at the gangsters to help the giant.
While thinking that I really need to get an exorcism.
