Chapter 24: Chapter 23 Departure
After lunch, Hiro and Killua, carrying his backpack, walked out of the restaurant and prepared to head down the mountain together.
In truth, even if Hiro hadn't come along, Killua could have left smoothly on his own. After all, as long as he acted a little fierce, Kikyo would eventually give in and let him go.
The main reason Hiro came was because he didn't want something stupid to happen — like in the original story, where Killua had scratched Kikyo's face.
Hiro didn't want to see that happen.
Even though Kikyo herself might have been happy about it, in her own twisted way, a teenager's growth and independence shouldn't have to come at the cost of hurting his loved ones.
As Hiro expected, just as they stepped out the door, Kikyo caught up to them.
"Killua, you can't leave!"
Kikyo looked very anxious, but Kalluto, who stood quietly behind her, simply watched indifferently as usual.
But Hiro knew that deep down, even Kalluto felt reluctant to let Killua go.
Seeing Killua's annoyed expression, Hiro patted his head.
"Killua, wait a moment. Let me talk to Mom."
Hiro walked up to Kikyo, took something out of his pocket, placed it in her hand, then leaned close and whispered something in her ear.
Killua tried to eavesdrop from a distance, but he couldn't hear a word.
Kikyo's electronic eyes flickered violently, clearly showing her inner turmoil.
"Hiro… your gift is very much appreciated by your mother… but Killua is still young and immature. We can't just let him go wandering outside."
Although she still disagreed, her tone had softened significantly.
Hiro seized the chance to press further:
"Mom, you really don't have to worry. Actually, I already discussed letting Killua go out with Father Silva — and he agreed.
"We all believe that being out in the world will help Killua grow more than staying cooped up at home.
"Some answers are things Killua needs to discover for himself. No matter how much we tell him, it's no substitute for experiencing it on his own."
Hearing Hiro's words, the signal in Kikyo's electronic eyes wavered again.
"Even Silva… thinks this way… I understand.
"Little Killua, Mommy agrees. You can go."
"Well… thanks, Mom," Killua muttered awkwardly, then turned and skated off down the mountain. Soon his voice echoed back from afar:
"Hiro, why are you so slow? Didn't you say you'd walk me to the door?"
"What are you in such a hurry for? I'll catch up in just a few minutes."
After greeting Kikyo and Kalluto, Hiro disappeared from sight in a flash — so fast that neither of them could follow his movements.
"Shiro really is amazing. No wonder Silva likes him so much," Kikyo said softly, a hint of admiration in her tone.
Kalluto continued to stare quietly in the direction of the mountain, lost in thought.
…
After pushing open the third sixteen-ton Trial Door, Killua found Hiro already waiting outside for him.
"Hmph. Boring."
Faced with the gap between himself and Hiro, Killua could only put on a tough act.
Perhaps because he was used to being beaten by Hiro, Killua quickly changed the subject as if nothing had happened.
"Hiro, what did you just give Mom? She looked really happy about it."
"Oh, just some perfume. It has… special effects. Very useful for Mom."
"Special effects? Like what? Tell me!" Killua was curious.
"You're still too young. You wouldn't understand even if I told you. Let's just say… it has to do with Mom and Dad's… marital happiness."
"Marital happiness? Ugh. Never mind. Sounds boring."
Killua instantly lost interest, then put his hands behind his head and started walking ahead. Not long after, he turned back, looking smug.
"I already looked up all the info on the Hunter Exam. Turns out you get a ton of benefits if you pass.
"I don't know why you never bothered to take it, Hiro, but I am definitely going to be the first Hunter in our family.
"Heh. Finally, something I can do better than you."
"Oh, really? Then I'll be looking forward to it, Killua~" Hiro replied with a smile.
"Tch. Just watch — I'll show you!"
"When I come back, if I find your cooking skills have gone downhill, Hiro, as a future Hunter, I'll definitely kidnap you and claim the bounty!"
"Oh? Hearing you say that… now I really want to see how you plan to tie me up."
"Hmph. Tie you up… Fine! Big brother, I'm leaving now. Take care of yourself…"
"Mm. Have a safe trip. Take a good look at the outside world. And don't come back to see me until you've made some good friends."
"…"
Without any warning, Killua dropped the skateboard in his hand and threw himself into Hiro's arms, his voice catching as he choked back sobs:
"Brother… I will… I will bring my good friends back to see you!"
"Alright. Big brother believes you."
In the guard room, Jee-Boroun, who was secretly watching the two of them, couldn't help but wipe away his tears.
What a touching brotherhood! Master Hiro and Master Killua really have such a close bond…
Thinking this, Jee-Boroun quickly called General Manager Wutong, determined to share this heartwarming moment with him.
After finally coaxing away Killua — who had suddenly turned into a crybaby — Hiro couldn't help but want to burst out laughing.
However, since Jee-Boroun was still watching from the side, Hiro had no choice but to hold it in.
Little Killua… I'm already looking forward to seeing the scene when I, your big brother, show up with my three "good friends" during the Hunter Exam.
You'd never guess, would you? You cried and promised to bring your friends back to meet me — but in the end, it'll be me who introduces them to you personally.
And who knows? The first person in the Zoldyck family to officially become a Hunter… might not even be you. Ilmi and I are both strong competitors.
Hahaha… this kid Killua has already set himself up with so many flags. I can't wait to see his wonderful expression when the time comes.
Oh, and there's that guy Xiao Yi too… he'll probably show up disguised as that weirdo "Gittarackur" again. I'm looking forward to seeing his reaction when he sees me too.
The reason Hiro deliberately didn't tell his two little brothers he was also taking the Hunter Exam was simple:
He just wanted to mess with them.
After all — isn't that what little brothers are for? To be teased by their big brother?
…
After successfully getting Killua to agree to take the Hunter Exam, Hiro himself was ready to set off as well.
Of course, before leaving, he still had to settle some things at home.
First, Hiro found Silva and told him about both himself and Killua going to take the Hunter Exam.
He hadn't lied to Kikyo before — he really had already discussed it with Silva long ago. Now he was just informing him of the plan.
As the ultimate doting father, Silva naturally had no objections.
He just reminded Hiro to be careful and didn't say much else.
Kikyo happened to be in Silva's room at the time too, but Hiro was very tactful and didn't stay as a third wheel. He quickly took his leave.
Then Hiro went to find Alluka, bringing her a bunch of new supplies.
He told her that he and Killua were going on a long journey to take part in something called the Hunter Exam, and they wouldn't be back for a while.
Although Alluka pretended to be jealous that Hiro and Killua got to go out and "play" together, in the end he very seriously told Hiro not to worry about him. Truly, a very thoughtful little brother.
Hiro secretly swore to himself again — once he got his Hunter license, with access to more information channels, he would definitely find a way to rescue Alluka.
Next up were Milluki and Kalluto.
Hiro knew that Kalluto was just like Alluka — he envied Hiro for being able to go out with Killua.
If Kalluto had been old enough, Hiro would definitely have brought him along to take the Hunter Exam.
But there was no way around it. So Hiro promised that he would regularly take photos on his journey and share them with him — and asked Kalluto to help supervise Milluki's weight loss while he was gone.
For Kalluto, who possessed the ability [Paper Manipulation], keeping an eye on Milluki was an easy task, so he agreed without hesitation.
As for Milluki, at first he thought that with both Hiro and Killua away from home, he'd finally have some freedom.
But the moment he found out that yet another supervisor — Kalluto — had been assigned to him, he completely gave up all hope.
As for the two old men, Maha and Zeno, they weren't worried in the slightest about Hiro going on a long trip.
Instead, they were upset that they wouldn't get to eat his delicious cooking for a long while.
Once everything had been arranged, the next day Hiro officially set off on his journey to take the Hunter Exam.
First stop: Whale Island.
Judging by the timing, Gon should be trying to catch the Lord of the Lake right about now.
Hiro even brought his own fishing rod.
He was ready to have a showdown with Gon.
Let's see who's the better fisherman!
