Chapter 145: Chapter 143
Chapter 143: A Life as Calm as Water
Unknowingly, more than a month had passed. It was now October 10th, and Harry Potter had been enjoying a rare period of tranquility at Hogwarts.
Professor Quirrell, aside from his worsening complexion, remained quiet during class and caused no trouble. Dudley Dursley, surprisingly, had been behaving. Though he had already established himself as the dominant force in Hufflepuff, he somehow never gave Harry any problems.
Draco Malfoy, who had once seemed an enemy, had become more of a distant classmate. The two hardly exchanged words unless it was necessary. Perhaps it was Lucius Malfoy's influence—he had made a cryptic comment about it during one of his few conversations with Draco—but Rita Skeeter hadn't written a single scandal about Harry. Sometimes, Harry wondered if all the chaos from earlier had simply been a dream.
Even Ron, his troublesome yet loyal friend, had become easier to handle. Harry discovered a way to keep Ron grounded: flattery. "Ron, you know so much about Quidditch. Could you explain more to me?" Or when Ron showed signs of recklessness, Harry would suggest a game of wizard chess. Ron's aptitude for chess was undeniable. Harry would compliment his strategic thinking and assure him that doing anything impulsive wouldn't suit someone so clever. Thus, one of the main sources of chaos in Harry's life was gently neutralized.
Yet while Harry's life appeared peaceful on the surface, not everything was going in a positive direction.
After being selected as Seeker, Harry noticed a shift in Professor Snape's behavior. He never once praised Harry in class. It seemed Snape still held a grudge—perhaps for Harry's father, a fellow Seeker who had once bested him, or perhaps for reasons Harry couldn't fully understand. If it weren't for the brief training in Atlantis, Harry might not have had the emotional fortitude to occasionally offer Snape a stiff, polite smile.
But the most discouraging thing was Roger Davis.
His "tactical seminars" and erratic teaching style left Harry doubting himself. He knew he was gifted—Ron had even claimed Harry might be better than his older brother Charlie, the Gryffindor Seeker—but could he really carry the whole team alone? If they lost, would Roger label him a failure for not understanding his bizarre tactics?
Fortunately, aside from those moments of doubt, life remained calm. Ryan, strangely, had been absent more often. Whenever Harry had free time and considered asking about Atlantis, Ryan was already gone.
What Harry didn't know was that Ryan was indeed preoccupied—too busy, in fact, to meddle in Harry's affairs. The real reason for the chaos during the first month of school had been Dudley Dursley's sudden transformation into a wizard, and that had been orchestrated by Ryan himself.
Over the past month, Ryan had focused on locating the route to Moon City.
Though the Any Gate had been confirmed to connect to the Moon, Ryan still couldn't access it. He was certain there were no level 6 wizards in Moon City. If there were, his magic vision would have detected the traces they left behind—every level 6 wizard had a distinct magical presence.
A level 6 wizard wasn't just someone with access to powerful spells. They were beings on the cusp of godhood. In Ryan's view, wizards like Amelia Bones, Flitwick, Snape, and McGonagall were near that threshold. Dumbledore, however, was something else entirely. He had achieved the transformation not through magic, but through a philosophy he called "love."
Ryan believed the wizards of Moon City had no individual level 6 members but relied on something similar to Atlantis—a collective magical identity. Atlantis represented peace. Moon City embodied concealment. Ryan suspected they had copied the Smith family model, turning magic into a shared concept.
The physical distance between Moon City and Earth also diluted Ryan's advantage. The gap minimized his influence, equalizing the playing field.
Despite these challenges, Ryan was surprised to find that in his absence, Harry had adapted well. He was living a peaceful life, even though the plan to send him to Moon City had failed.
But the calm had unintended consequences. Ryan regretted placing Harry in Ravenclaw more than once. Had he been sorted into Gryffindor, Harry would be sneaking out at night, falling for harmless pranks, and causing a delightful amount of trouble. Now, he was simply too quiet.
Even Ron had become easy to handle, thanks to his interest in ghostwriting with the verbose Sage. Ryan would have happily funded the book and distributed it through the Smith channels, even if it made no profit. Now that he was wealthy again, what was the harm?
Ryan ruffled his hair—or tried to. None came loose. It was so healthy and thick, even pulling didn't dislodge a single strand. He missed the days of stress-induced hair loss.
Still, none of these setbacks truly annoyed him.
What really bothered Ryan was Halloween. It was approaching fast, and Kate and Penelope had already started planning activities. Roasted pumpkin aromas filled the castle, and all it did was remind Ryan of one of his worst food memories: pumpkin rice.
As a child in his past life, Ryan had hated that dish. The pumpkin would seep into the rice and make everything sticky and sweet. He had been the only one in his family who hated it. Even now, the smell made his stomach turn.
He pinched the bridge of his nose to block his sense of smell.
Then a sudden thought brightened his mood: "Wait… isn't Quirrell going to release the troll on Halloween?"
That would be perfect. Halloween would be ruined, Quirrell would have his chance to sneak into the vault for the Philosopher's Stone, and Ryan would only need to prepare some presents. If he timed it well, Harry might even get a "surprise encounter" out of it.
"Everyone can have the Halloween they deserve," Ryan muttered to himself with a smile. "Well, except for Snape. He'll be bitten by a dog. As expected."
