Chapter 235: Chapter 235: The Tribute of the Merpeople (Part 3)
Jane Yu once more found herself standing before a wryly smiling Dumbledore, who seemed to feel the world had gone mad.
After enduring several days of sonic assaults, she exuded an intense aura of pressure.
"Yu, the merpeople leader, Mercus, has expressed a cross-species emotional request on behalf of his kin. Do you have any insight into this?"
Jane Yu almost thought she was hallucinating from lack of sleep.
"What cross-species emotional request? Is his brain functioning properly?"
Realizing the meaning of the words, she couldn't help but show a disdainful expression, wishing she could knock out that attention-seeking merman:
"Different species won't work out. I advise them to respect reality and abandon their fantasies."
"Moreover, their screaming has seriously disturbed my normal life. Such high decibels shouldn't occur at night."
"If they refuse to stop screaming, I might have to resort to some forceful measures."
Though Jane Yu's words were full of threats, Dumbledore still showed a relieved smile.
After confirming that his student had not developed a romantic relationship with the merpeople, he turned to persuade Mercus:
"She has no intention of developing a relationship with the merpeople. I think you must have misunderstood."
"In fact, your courtship songs have already disturbed the students."
"The story you mentioned is just a fairy tale made up by Muggles, not in line with reality."
Mercus swam agitatedly in the water, baring his teeth at Dumbledore, clearly unable to accept such a result.
In his view, if he couldn't establish a good relationship with this witch, his tribe might one day face the fate of being cooked.
"(No, we are willing to offer our most handsome merman!)" he screamed in Mermish, "(It's our honor!)"
Dumbledore took a deep breath, deciding not to discuss this absurd issue any further.
He realized something was amiss because Mercus's words obviously contained humility and fear:
"Why are you so persistent about this, Mercus? Can you tell me the reason?"
Mercus glared at him fiercely, emitting a series of harsh notes that changed Dumbledore's expression:
"...What did you say? Boiling fish soup with fire? Grilled fish? ...I sent a predator? How could it be?..."
"No, no, she's really just an ordinary warrior... I have no intention of driving you away, it's all a misunderstanding..."
Dumbledore never expected—
He actually heard such an outrageous description from Mercus!
No wonder on the day of the competition, no matter how he called Mercus, he refused to appear!
It turned out that his tribe almost faced annihilation! Nearly perished at the hands of Jane Yu!
Dumbledore turned to continue asking Jane Yu about her actions during the Triwizard Tournament:
"Yu, Mercus mentioned that you tried to cook them during the Black Lake event... Did you do that?"
"What?" Jane Yu felt that everything she heard had become surreal, quickly denying three times in a row, "I didn't, I didn't, don't talk nonsense!"
But perhaps due to the many incredible things that had happened since Jane Yu enrolled, Dumbledore, who deeply grasped the pattern, changed his way of asking:
"Did you use powerful fire spells like Incendio?"
"Indeed, I did." Jane Yu nodded, "The water temperature was too low, I was afraid of cramping in the water, so I preheated it a bit."
Dumbledore choked strangely.
Although he always knew Jane Yu's thoughts were different...
But his voice still involuntarily carried surprise, uncontrollably asking:
"The reason you used Incendio... was to heat the lake water...?"
"Is there a problem with that?" Jane Yu asked in confusion, "Madam Pomfrey even praised me for being considerate and preventing colds... After all, in such cold weather..."
"Nothing wrong." Dumbledore answered with difficulty, "Uh... returning to the essence of magic... practicality... commendable..."
Having figured out the cause of the incident, he turned to explain to the merpeople leader in Mermish:
"You heard it, Mercus. It was just an accident, she didn't know you couldn't withstand high temperatures..."
"You can rest assured to live here, our friendship... remains as always..."
As the gold-medal mediator and translator, Dumbledore quickly resolved this emotional dispute mixed with coercion and intimidation.
Under his witness, both sides shook hands... shook fins and reconciled, signing a verbal treaty of peaceful coexistence and non-aggression.
The merpeople promised not to disturb Jane's sleep, and Jane promised not to turn them into grilled or boiled fish.
After the mediation, Mercus grinned happily and presented a tribute to Jane Yu.
"Mercus gives you this as... uh... a symbol of your... non-aggression... friendship with them."
Dumbledore handed a strangely shaped conch necklace to Jane Yu:
"Put it to your ear, it can guide you, blow it, and it can summon merpeople."
Like a high-end compass, a merpeople version of navigation.
Jane Yu took the conch necklace and hung it around her neck, thanking Mercus.
Another inexplicable trophy added!
So many pearls and shells—
This merpeople, quite sincere indeed!
