Chapter 54: Dementor Rebellion
---Magical Law Enforcement Office---
Amelia Bones was in a meeting with Nymphadora Tonks, Mad-Eye Moody and Kingsley Shacklebolt discussing about Voldemort when an Auror suddenly interrupted.
"Madam Amelia, something terrible has happened," reported the Auror, his face pale.
"What happened, Vigor?" asked Amelia Bones.
"Azkaban... Azkaban has been breached," Vigor reported, his voice shaky.
"What?" Everyone in the room was shocked.
"Tell me exactly what happened there," Amelia asked again, her tone urgent.
"David, the Auror stationed at Azkaban, reported that the prisoners have broken out. Three other Aurors have been kissed by Dementors, and the Dementors... they've left Azkaban," Vigor explained.
"What?" The other Aurors stood up, visibly shaken by the news.
"You mean the Dementors have rebelled against the Ministry?" asked Mad-Eye Moody, narrowing his eyes.
"Yes," replied Vigor.
"Summon this David. Bring him here with his personal information that located in the room number ten," ordered Amelia.
Within minutes, the Auror returned with a parchment and David Sterning himself.
Amelia took the parchment and quickly read through it:
Name: David Sterning
Age: 21 years old
Current Position: Guard of Azkaban
After about two minutes, she put down the parchment and looked at David, who was pale and trembling with fear.
"I've read what happened to your colleagues. Now, tell me what really happened there," Amelia ordered.
David recounted everything, including how he had been mistreated as an Auror because of his Muggle-born status.
"Alright, I believe you," said Amelia. "Give him some chocolate. The rest of you—let's go to Azkaban."
---Azkaban---
The atmosphere at Azkaban was brighter than before. Normally, it was filled with dark energy due to the presence of Dementors, but since they had abandoned the prison, the dark magic had left with them.
"Form teams of three and search the nearby prison and surrounding. Look for any magical signatures," Amelia ordered.
The Aurors quickly organized into groups of three and began searching outside, while Amelia entered the prison to assess the damage.
She soon discovered that all of the prisoners convicted as Death Eaters had escaped. Turning to the Aurors escorting her, she spoke aloud, "It seems Harry Potter's claim about the Dark Lord returning is true."
"Madam—" one of the Aurors started, but Amelia cut him off.
"What?"
Some Aurors were in denial, while others appeared fearful, but a few showed no reaction at all. Amelia silently noted these individuals—Aurors from pureblood families, whom she suspected of being untrustworthy or potential Death Eater sympathizers.
The First Wizarding War against Voldemort had taught her that purebloods were often spared by Voldemort, with some, like Barty Crouch Jr., being part of his inner circle. Thanks to seeing the memory of Harry Potter, she had become more matured and clever.
Suddenly, the team of Aurors who had been searching the nearby cells and surrounding returned to report.
"Madam Amelia, we've detected a strong magical signature. It's full of dark magic," one of the Aurors reported.
"Show me," Amelia ordered.
They led her to the area where Voldemort had cast Protego Diabolica, and Moody was the first to react.
"Amelia, I recognize this magic—it's Protego Diabolica," said Moody, his voice grim.
"Are you sure, Moody?" Amelia asked, needing confirmation.
"Yes, I'm certain. This is dark magic, but it's not Fiendfyre. This is Protego Diabolica, the most powerful defensive Dark Magic," Moody explained.
Amelia rubbed her forehead, feeling a headache coming on as the threat of a new war loomed closer.
"I need to report this to the press. I'm sure they've already caught wind of this incident considering they have previously caught on with with any news that happen in ministry of magic," she said, then added to herself, "Maybe now Cornelius Fudge will finally accept that Voldemort has returned."
---Cornelius Fudge
True to what Amelia had said, news about the Azkaban breach quickly reached the Daily Prophet, as they had many moles inside the Ministry. However, the story wouldn't be reported if the major shareholders decided to withhold the information or if someone powerful, like Malfoy, intervened to stop it.
But this news is so big that even if they wanted to block it, it would still spread to others.
Cornelius Fudge actually believed, to a small degree, that Voldemort had returned. He had seen Barty Crouch Jr., the Dark Mark on Snape's arm, and heard Sirius Black's confession regarding Peter Pettigrew, the real murderer.
As a regular wizard who once admired Dumbledore, a small part of him—1%—trusted the man. However, his ego, fear, and greed prevented him from accepting that he might be wrong.
Fudge held onto the delusion that if he denied Voldemort's return, the Dark Lord would never appear before him.
But today, more proof had landed on his desk because Azkaban had been breached and the Dementors had left the prison.
"That must be Sirius Black," accused Cornelius Fudge, his intelligence suddenly drop because he forgot that Sirius Black had been cleared of all charges and declared innocent.
"Cornelius Fudge," said Amelia sternly, "Sirius Black has been exonerated and found not guilty."
Surprised by Amelia's words, Cornelius finally remembered that Sirius had been found not guilty.
"I'm sorry, I forgot about that insignificant man," replied Cornelius Fudge dismissively.
"I don't care what you call him, but the Dark Lord return is real. We need to spread the news so we can act before he gathers more followers," said Amelia sternly.
"Return? You're delusional, Amelia," Cornelius scoffed.
"Delusional? No, you're the one who's scared Dumbledore will take your position as Minister of Magic," retorted Amelia.
"You—" Cornelius grabbed his wand and pointed it at her, but Amelia was faster, swiftly disarming him.
"Don't," Amelia half-shouted. "Ever point your wand at my face."
Cornelius, pale with fear, almost lost control of himself.
"I'm sorry, but your claim that You-Know-Who has returned is just a story Dumbledore made up."
"Why? Isn't the proof all around us?" asked Amelia, incredulous.
"No, there's no solid proof that he's back," Fudge denied.
Amelia fumed, finally deciding to leave. Cornelius Fudge was too terrified to accept the reality of Voldemort's return.
Looking back, she thought, 'It's thanks to Dudley inviting me to meet him that I know the truth. Otherwise, my nephew might be in danger because I'm Voldemort's enemy.'
