Chapter 50: The Price You Pay
As Kala was being dragged away she passed out once more from using up her energy when trying to get to Hiccup. Her wounds were still bleeding, a couple worse now that she had been moving about, and now her breathing was barely noticeable.
Stoick came up to the Vikings that had Kala with a rage filled expression on his face. "You will let the lass go this instant. That is unless you would rather be banished from Berk or even executed?" The chief asked as he glared at the Vikings.
Said Vikings got nervous and looked between one another, then they looked back at the chief.
"But she's a demon! You saw what just happened, Stoick! We can't let her do that to anyone else!" The bravest of the lot exclaimed and that made Stoick very upset.
"We have known this girl for almost four years now! She has not once tried to turn any of us against each other and has done everything she can to help this village keep the peace! Now release her so I may take her to Gothi before she dies!"
The Vikings jumped and released Kala. Stoick was able to catch the unconscious girl before she hit the ground. He looked towards the other Vikings present and glared at the Hoffersons. The family in question was fretting over Astrid and tending to her cuts from Hiccup's claws. They weren't that deep, but they were big in size. Rather close to her eye as well.
"Snotlout! I want you to take Kala to Gothi for me and grab that journal!" Stoick ordered as he looked at the riders.
Snotlout nodded as he rushed over to the chief and gently took the injured girl from his arms, then he dashed off to get to Gothi's hut.
"I need the council members, Dragon Riders, and the Hoffersons to meet me in the Great Hall for a meeting immediately! We have some things to discuss!" The chief shouted as he made his way to the Great Hall, the riders right behind.
~~~HTLANF~~~
Once everyone in question was present in the Great Hall, the atmosphere of the room became thick with tension.
"Now that we are all here, there are some obvious things that need to be addressed." Stoick said calmly as he leaned against the table, looking at his council members and the Hoffersons.
"Right you are Stoick! That monster almost killed my little girl! It needs to be executed!" Mr. Hofferson shouted in anger.
"That monster you're referring to is Hiccup! He is not in any way dangerous! He was protecting his mate!" Heather shot back, glaring harshly at the man.
"The wounds on my daughter's face beg to differ!" Mrs. Hofferson exclaimed.
"Alright that is enough! There will be no fighting!" Stoick shouted and everyone went silent. "Now, it has come to my attention that there are some things that must come to light to resolve what has transpired earlier today. Starting with Hiccup's transformation. Fishlegs?"
The young Viking cleared his throat as Snotlout gave him the journal. "So a couple months back, Hiccup and Kala came across a journal that was hidden on Dragon's Edge. This one to be exact." He started as he placed the journal on the table for everyone to see. "It's a journal that explains everything you need to know about Night Furies. Examples being how they age and where they are from."
"What does this bloody journal have to do with what just happened to Astrid?" Spitelout questioned with his arms crossed.
"Well, there is one specific thing in this journal that explains why Hiccup is now a Night Fury. You see, Night Furies have this failsafe to keep their species from dying out." Fishlegs stated as he opened the journal to the bonding section. "Every Night Fury is able to bond with a human, as in making an unbreakable connection, which slowly transforms the human in question into a Night Fury. Now this process can be sped up if the human and Night Fury decide to become mates."
"So you mean to tell us that Hiccup has been turning into a dragon for three years now?!" Mr. Hofferson yelled.
"Alvar, there will be no fighting in this meeting!" Stoick shouted and Mr. Hofferson glared at him.
"This is outrageous! How do you expect us to believe any of this nonsense?! Who's to say they didn't make all of this up to protect that little demon friend of theirs?!" Mr. Hofferson shot back.
"I agree with Alvar! There's no proof that this is even true! For all we know these traitors made this journal all by themselves!" Mrs. Hofferson added.
"Oh here we go." Gobber said with a roll of the eyes.
"Does it look like we're smart enough to come up with a completely different language?" Ruffnut asked as she gestured at the dragon tongue runes residing within the journal.
"The lass has a point." Sven pointed out shyly.
"Astrid knows that we're not lying. She was there when Hiccup and Kala showed us." Snotlout stated with his arms crossed, a glare pointed at the shieldmaiden in question.
Astrid froze up where she sat. "W-wha?" She scoffed and crossed her arms. "Yeah so what? That demon could've made all of this herself so that she wasn't caught. She's had three years to work on it."
"And yet in those three years all she did was keep the peace and protect Berk from enemies. Face it Astrid, your gig is up. Stop lying already. None of us knew about the bonding process until the journal came to us." Snotlout shot back. "Not you, not me, not Fishlegs, definitely not the twins, not Hiccup , and most of all, not Kala ."
"Snotlout's right. Kala barely knew anything about her species before she found this journal." Heather said as she rested her hand on said journal. "She was alone for most of her life, learning how to fend for herself from the day she was hatched. How could she have possibly come up with all of this?"
Astrid glared at them harshly. "She's a deceiver! For all we know she could've lied about all of that just to gain our trust!"
"From what we've seen, it's the complete opposite. Kala is nothing but genuine in what she does." Heather shot back, very upset.
"Aye, the lass has always shown her true colors to us since the day she became a part of this tribe. Even before we knew about her abilities." Gobber chimed in.
"Quite right you are. Kala is many things, but a deceiver is not one of them." Stoick stated.
"But you guys saw what happened! She transformed Hiccup right in front of us just to keep herself from being killed! I could've died!" Astrid tried.
"Kala was barely conscious! Her scales couldn't even appear to protect her! We all saw how beat up she was! It's a miracle that she's still even alive!" Heather exclaimed as she slammed her hands against the table.
"And from what we witnessed. You're the one that had Kala pinned against the wall with an axe to her throat. Everyone else was just concerned about her well-being. You're the one who has tried to kill her three times now." Ruffnut added with her arms crossed.
Mr. and Mrs. Hofferson's eyes widened at that.
"Three?!"
"Oh did she not tell you? That's why she had to come back to Berk so soon. She tried to kill Kala a second time when we found out about the bond. So Hiccup banished her from Dragon's Edge." Snotlout said smugly, a smirk residing on his lips.
"You mean to tell me that my daughter has tried to kill Kala three times now?!" Mrs. Hofferson asked.
"Exactamundo Mrs. Hofferson." Tuffnut chimed.
"All the riders minus myself can testify to it ma'am. All of them were present when it happened. The past two times in fact." Heather added.
Astrid shrunk down as glares from her parents were pointed at her.
"So not only did you try to kill her three years ago, but now twice in only a couple months?!" Mrs. Hofferson asked angrily.
"I…w-well…"
"And you better not lie to me young lady!"
Astrid flinched and lowered her head in shame. "Yes…"
"See?! We told you!" Snotlout exclaimed.
"Astrid, explain yourself right now!" Mr. Hofferson ordered.
Astrid gripped harshly onto her chair as her eyes clamped shut. "I tried to kill her because she took my life away!! She took the life I have wanted for years from me!! I wanted to be the one to be on top with the guarantee of being married to the next chief! It's not because I love Hiccup! I don't love him at all! I just want to be above everyone else! Yes, I lied about why I came back! Yes, I know that Kala isn't a deceiver or a demon! I was just trying to get the village to hate her! And yes, I know that neither Hiccup or Kala knew about the bond! There! I said it! Are you happy now?!" She exclaimed, tears forming in her eyes as she heaved in breaths.
The room went silent as she finally looked up. The riders were smirking at her, Stoick, Gobber and Sven just looked disappointed, and her parents and Spitelout were glaring daggers at her.
"So you mean to tell me that I locked up the chief's son based on lies?!" Spitelout exclaimed as he slammed his hands against the table and rose from his seat.
Astrid looked away as she wiped away her tears. "Yes…" She looked back at the group with determination in her eyes. "But he tried to kill me! That should be reason enough to have him locked up!"
"Astrid, we understand your anger, but to lie and deceive the entire village because of it? We raised you better than this! A shieldmaiden does not lie and deceive her way through battles. They are supposed to be honorable and fight for what is right. You just admitted to doing the opposite of that. I am very disappointed in you. You took an oath and broke it." Mrs. Hofferson said with her arms crossed.
"But!" Astrid started, but was cut off by her father.
"No buts. Your mother is right. Deceiving the entire village to get your way is not okay. Yes, Hiccup attacked you and he was locked up because of it. But, if you had not tried to kill the girl we may not have been in this situation. Your mother and I aren't trying to side with them, we are just trying to get you to see the consequences of your actions."
"Your parents are right lass. You have gone against your oath as a shieldmaiden and have proven yourself unworthy of the title. Although, it seems like there is more to this than meets the eye. Care to enlighten us?" Stoick said.
"Oh this should be good." Snotlout said, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes.
Astrid looked around then sighed. "I was part of the kidnapping that happened last night…I went to Viggo and Ryker Grimborn for help and I told them about Kala's abilities…they promised to keep her alive for me so I could finish the job…"
"So not only were you deceiving the village, but you went to the enemy for help? You do realize that is treason girl!" Spitelout stated.
"Well yes, but I-" Astrid tried to defend, but Stoick cut her off as he stood.
"I think we've heard enough. Astrid Hofferson, in light of what we have heard today, I hereby sentence you to time in the prison hold. The amount of time has yet to be decided. Does the council agree?"
"Aye." Gobber, Spitelout and Sven answered.
"Alvar and Fayree?"
"Aye, we agree." Mr. Hofferson said, his wife nodding in agreement.
"Mom, Dad…" Astrid breathed out very heartbroken.
"It's for your own good Astrid. Maybe some jail time will give you time to think over your actions." Mrs. Hofferson said sadly.
"Then it's decided. Astrid Hofferson will lose her shieldmaiden privileges, spend an undecided amount of time within the prison hold, and lose rights as a Dragon Rider. Stormfly will be free to roam about the island until she finds a new rider or even a new home." Stoick listed off.
"Wait what?! You said nothing about me losing my dragon!" Astrid shouted in anger.
"You have proven yourself untrustworthy Ms. Hofferson. Taking Stormfly away from you aids in protecting the village should the need ever arise. She will be taken well care of in your absence." Stoick explained as he signaled for the guards to take Astrid away.
She struggled against their grip as she was dragged out of the Great Hall. "You can't do this! This isn't fair!"
"Nothing is fair when it comes to judgment." Stoick said sternly right before the heavy doors of the Great Hall closed behind the guards.
~~~HTLANF~~~
After Astrid was locked away and everyone was on the same page, the meeting moved onto the matter of Hiccup's attack.
"I really don't see any other way to handle this Stoick. He attacked a villager. Plain and simple." Spitelout stated as he leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed.
"Aye, but let's at least hear him out. We don't know the full story. Just what we witnessed. The boy could be the key to his own release." Stoick reasoned.
"The chief's right. We all saw the state the lad was in when they returned. It was like he wasn't fully there. He deserves a chance to defend himself before we come to a decision." Gobber chimed in.
"I for one would love to hear what he has to say. He harmed my daughter and I want to know his reasoning." Mrs. Hofferson stated, a bit of anger seeping out.
"Alright, let's bring him in then." Stoick decided and the guards that were left in the hall went to go get Hiccup.
During the time they waited, they talked over how long Astrid's sentence would be, but couldn't come to a decision. The talking came to a stop as the doors opened and Hiccup, in human form, was pushed inside harshly by one of the guards.
"Here he is, just like ya asked chief." One of them said.
"Thank you. You can take the chains off of him. They won't be necessary." Stoick thanked.
"But sir!"
"He won't harm us. Take off the chains."
The guard sighed and removed the chains. Hiccup sighed in relief and rubbed his wrists as he made his way to the table, not looking at anyone or even sitting down.
"You can sit Hiccup, it's alright." Stoick encouraged.
Hiccup glanced at the chief then glued his eyes on the floor as he answered. "I-I'd rather stand…thanks…"
"If you insist. Now, I've asked you here so that you could enlighten us on your side of the story. What happened?" The chief asked calmly.
Hiccup took a deep breath as he clutched onto his arms tightly. "I…"
"It's alright lad. You can tell us." Gobber said, sympathy clear in his words.
Hiccup's eyes shut tightly as his breathing slowly started to get heavier. "M-my instincts took over…all I could see was Kala in pain…struggling to stay alive…I-I didn't want to lose her…she's my everything…"
"So when you attacked Astrid, you were just trying to save who you care for most. Am I right?" Spitelout asked.
Hiccup nodded. "Y-yes…I d-didn't mean to hurt her…I swear it…I wasn't thinking straight…b-but I snapped out of it the second Astrid shouted that I was a m-monster…"
"So the cuts you gave her were an accident?" Mrs. Hofferson asked, getting a small nod from Hiccup as an answer.
"And just how long have you been a dragon lad?" Sven asked.
"A-about two days now I think…" Hiccup said.
Stoick stroked his beard in thought. "So there are things that you are still needing to learn to control then. Well then, I think all of us can agree that this issue has been resolved. You were just protecting your mate and the wounds were an accident. There is no reason for us to keep you locked up based on an accident."
The council members, Dragon Riders, and even the Hoffersons nodded in agreement to Stoick's decision.
Hiccup's head shot up with his eyes wide. "Really..? B-but I hurt someone…i-if I didn't snap out of it I-I could've…"
"But ya didn't Hiccup." Gobber stated. "You came back to your senses before anything too serious happened. It was only a shallow scratch, that's it. Ya didn't kill the lass."
Hiccup looked down again as tears formed within his green orbs. "But I wanted to…" He whispered. "Every part of my being was screaming at me to end her…to make sure the threat against my mate's life was taken care of…I-I know that I wasn't thinking straight, but…"
Stoick got up and went over to the boy, resting his hands on his shoulders. "Hiccup look at me."
Hiccup looked up at the chief as a few tears slipped.
"You have every right to feel that way. She tried to kill the one person you care for most in the entirety of the Nine Worlds. I felt the same way when your mother was taken by that Stormcutter eighteen years ago. But that doesn't mean that you deserve to be locked away because of it, ya hear?"
Hiccup sniffled and nodded in understanding.
"Good. Now that we know all of this was an accident, you can get going. I'm sure there's a certain someone you want to check on." Stoick said with a chuckle.
Hiccup's mood changed on a dime from sorrowful guilt to pure worry as he rushed out of the Great Hall, the other riders right behind their leader.
"So how should we tell the village Stoick?" Gobber asked his friend as he made his way to his side.
"We'll explain everything in a town meeting once the riders head out. Rather not have them deal with anymore hateful words from those they once thought they could trust. They've been through enough for one day, don't you think?"
~~~HTLANF~~~
The other riders had a hard time keeping up with Hiccup once they got outside. He had transformed and dashed off at top speed to get to Gothi's hut the second he made it out of the Great Hall.
"Aw come on! Why'd he have to transform?" Snotlout complained as he ran faster to try to catch up to his cousin.
Hiccup dodged everyone he ran past with ease, ignoring the fearful yelps and rude words thrown his way as he went. His only focus was getting to the old healer's hut to make sure his mate was alright.
'Please be okay…I can't lose you…not after we finally became mates…not ever…'
Once he got to his destination, Hiccup transformed again right before he entered. Gothi smiled softly at the panting boy and gestured for him to follow her. He obliged and followed her to another room specifically for the severely wounded. Hiccup rushed over to Kala's side as soon as he spotted her and gently grasped her hand as he moved hair out of her face. She was still unconscious, but all of her injuries were tended to and the blood and dirt had been washed away.
"How long will she be out..?" He asked as he looked towards Gothi.
The elderly woman wrote in the sand skewed across the floor. "Maybe a couple more hours or so. She'll be fine. Now that she is resting, her wounds are healing quite quickly. Must be another ability of your species."
Hiccup's eyes widened. "Y-you know that I'm a Night Fury now?"
Gothi smiled and nodded, writing in the sand once more. "I put two and two together when I saw the bite mark on Kala's neck."
Hiccup blushed and looked at his mate as he cleared his throat. "R-right. Um…thank you for healing her…I don't know what I would've done if she had died today…"
Gothi patted his back as her own special way of telling him 'you're welcome', then she made her way out of the room as the other riders entered.
Hiccup glanced at them, then put his attention right back on Kala as they came up to the bed. "She said it would be a couple hours before she wakes…"
Snotlout rested a hand on his cousin's shoulder. "And you'll be the first one she sees when she does. She's a fighter. Like Hel she would've let herself die so soon."
Hiccup chuckled a bit and nodded. "Yeah you're right…"
"It's honestly a miracle that Kala survived. After you were locked up, she was barely even breathing…" Fishlegs said sadly.
Hiccup teared up a bit when he said that, his grip on Kala's hand tightening a bit as though she would disappear if he let go. "Um…w-who brought her to Gothi..?"
"I did. The chief told me to before we were in that meeting. I'm just glad I was fast enough." Snotlout said, some relief clear in his tone.
Hiccup looked at his cousin with a tearful smile. "Thank you…"
"No problemo cuz." Snotlout joked a bit as he pat Hiccup's shoulder.
"Alright guys, let's get outta here. Don't wanna ruin their little reunion when Kala wakes." Heather said as she ushered the others out of the room.
The twins left reluctantly and Snotlout and Fishlegs left just a little less reluctantly than the twins.
"We'll get all our things ready to go. Take all the time you need." Heather said, then made her way out of the room.
Hiccup nodded at her then looked back at Kala and kissed her hand softly. "I'm so glad I didn't lose you…" He whispered.
~~~HTLANF~~~
My eyes slowly opened, then they quickly shut again from the brightness of the candles in the room. I groaned as I covered them with a hand, but I uncovered them when I heard a small chuckle from beside me. I looked over at the person it came from and smiled when I saw it was Hiccup.
"What's so funny..?" I asked jokingly.
"Probably the fact that dim candles are hurting your eyes." He retorted just as jokingly.
I giggled and smiled lovingly at him. "You've been waiting for me to wake up this whole time haven't you..?"
"Well since I was pardoned, yeah." He chuckled. "I'm glad you're okay."
"Me too..I was scared that I wouldn't make it.."
Hiccup intertwined our hands in a tight grip. "Yeah..I was too.."
"So what happened while I was out..?"
"Astrid was found out and put in jail, and I was let go because the wounds I gave Astrid were an accident. Not to mention they understood why I tried to attack her and decided that was no reason to keep me in chains."
I smiled with relief glimmering in my eyes. "That's good.." My mood dropped when I thought about everyone's reactions to seeing Hiccup transform. "But…the village is terrified of us now…"
Hiccup sighed and nodded. "Yeah…unfortunately… Once we get Gothi's approval for you to leave, we're all heading back home. There's no point in staying here longer than we need to. I'll fly us home that way you won't wear yourself out."
I nodded. "Okay..promise me we won't come back here unless absolutely necessary.."
"I promise we won't come back to Berk unless absolutely necessary milady." Hiccup promised as he kissed my hand.
I purred happily and smiled at him. We kept eye contact for a while, but it broke when we looked towards Gothi as she entered the room. She smiled at me when she came up to the bed and wrote down something.
"She says she's happy to see you awake love." Hiccup translated since I couldn't see the sand she wrote in.
I nodded with a small smile and slowly sat up, wincing a bit as I did. Hiccup helped me sit up fully when he noticed it was causing me pain.
"Thank you.." I said with a smile and he nodded and kissed my forehead.
Gothi dragged a stool over to the bed and stood atop it. She then undid the wrappings around my body to get a good look at the wounds. I looked at them myself and saw that all the bruises were practically gone now and most, if not all of the wounds, were barely even scabs now. They would definitely be leaving scars, but that's the price you pay when you're severely injured I suppose.
I glanced at Hiccup and saw that there was pure relief on his face, but I could tell that there was still some anger towards the people who did this to me beneath the surface. I smiled at him goofily and he stifled a laugh.
"Not too bad, huh?" I asked jokingly and he had to cover his mouth to keep from laughing too much.
"Nope. Not at all. Good to know you can joke about being injured though." He said, a bit of sarcasm coming out with the last sentence.
"Wouldn't be able to cheer you up otherwise." I giggled.
Hiccup chuckled and ruffled up my hair. "Yeah, yeah."
I laughed and fixed my hair as Gothi put new wrappings around my wounds. Once she was done, she gently grabbed my face and made me look at her so she could check the injuries on my face, replacing the wrappings for those as well. She then hopped down from the stool and wrote something down in the sand once again. Luckily I was able to read it this time.
"You can head home, but I want you to take it easy. Just because you can heal quickly, doesn't mean you should be reckless. Is that understood?"
Hiccup and I nodded in understanding.
"I'll make sure she gets the rest she needs Gothi. We're probably gonna have to lay low for now anyways. There might be more bounty hunters out there that think we've still got bounties on us." Hiccup said and the elderly woman nodded in agreement.
"Good. Just be careful on your way home and stay out of trouble. We don't need any more severe injuries on either of you."
Hiccup and I stifled laughs and nodded again.
"We'll try our best Gothi. Thank you." I said happily and she nodded then made her way out of the room.
Once she was out of the room, Hiccup helped me stand and handed me a fresh pair of clothes.
"Good thing we brought a change of clothes, huh?" He asked as he let me use him as stability as I got my pants on.
"Yeah no kidding. Just how bad were my clothes?" I asked once I was sure my pants were tied properly.
"Torn to shreds. It's a wonder they were able to stay on your body so long." Hiccup said and my eyes widened a bit.
"They tore them up that badly?" I asked as I got my tunic on with just a tiny bit of difficulty because of the pain.
He nodded and untucked my hair for me then brought it all to the front, his hand brushing against the mate mark. I leaned into it with a soft purr and he chuckled a bit.
"That's the second time you've done that. Does it just feel good or?"
I nodded with a smile, then it turned into a playful smirk as I brushed my hand over his mark. He leaned into it purring like I did and I giggled.
"Okay I see what you mean." He laughed.
I smiled and got my boots on, using Hiccup as support again to make sure I didn't fall over in my attempts.
"You ready?" He asked and I nodded as I took hold of his hand, then he led us outside and down the steps up to Gothi's hut, keeping pace with me to make sure I truly was okay to walk.
Once we made it down the stairs, I noticed that the others were there with all our things ready to go. My eyes widened a bit when I spotted Stormfly amongst the other dragons.
"Storm what are you doing here?" I asked as I made my way to my friend and scratched her snout.
She purred happily as she replied. "I was set free of Astrid's care when she was locked away. Figured I would go back to the Edge with all of you since there isn't really anything I need to do here."
I smiled as tears welled up in my eyes and I hugged her tightly. "I'm glad..I've missed you a lot..you're the sister I never had.."
She hugged me back with her wing and head. "As are you Kala."
~~~HTLANF~~~
I smiled softly as Kala and Stormfly had their moment. It was good to see them like that again. Those two were definitely destined to be family.
Snotlout tossed the journal towards me and I caught it clumsily. "Had to take this to the meeting earlier to help explain some things. Why'd you bring it with us anyways?"
"Forgot that it was in Kala's satchel if I'm being honest. How'd they take to seeing it?" I asked as I stashed it away in one of the baskets.
"Not too great, but that's just because it was super tense from the whole attack and stuff. That whole meeting was just tense all around if I'm being honest." He said and I nodded.
"Yeah. I could feel it in the air when I was brought in. Did you get Kala and I's things?"
Snotlout nodded. "Yeah. Stormfly's the one with all of it. How're you two gonna get back? Kala just barely woke up, right?"
"I'm gonna fly us back. We'll just use her cloak as a makeshift saddle. Speaking of, where is her cloak?"
"Oh, Heather has it. She's the one that packed up your things. Didn't wanna put it in a basket though. She was worried it would mess up the scales."
I chuckled and nodded. "Yeah that's understandable. Thanks." I said, then made my way over to Heather, smiling at my mate and her Nadder sister as said Nadder was checking her over for anything Gothi could've missed. "Hey Heather? You think you could help me with making Kala's cloak a makeshift saddle? We haven't been able to make one for me yet." I asked sheepishly, rubbing the back of my neck with a barely noticeable embarrassed blush on my cheeks.
Heather smiled and nodded. "Sure thing. I'm guessing you're flying back then?" She asked as she grabbed the cloak.
I nodded then transformed, staying as still as I could as Heather tied it around me and used a bit of rope to keep it secure to my body. I crooned in thanks and she rubbed my head a bit.
"No problem." She said, then she mounted Windshear as the others mounted their own dragons.
I made my way over to Kala and nudged her towards my back gently. She smiled and obliged, scratching my head once she was on and holding onto her cloak for support.
"Alright, let's head home guys." Kala said and all of us took to the sky, leaving Berk behind once again, probably for a very long time.
