Chapter 556: Story 556: The Graveyard Awakens
The storm raged on as the ZETU team navigated their armored transport through the muddy roads. Lightning forked across the sky, illuminating the silhouette of an abandoned graveyard that loomed ahead. Its rusted iron gates creaked in the wind, a haunting melody to accompany the patter of rain.
"This is our destination?" Riley 'Quick Shot' Bennett asked, peering through the windshield. "Of all places, it had to be a cemetery?"
Captain Marcus Kane tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "Ethan picked up seismic activity here. Something's stirring beneath the surface."
"Great. Zombie clichés. What's next, vampires?" Jenna 'Blaze' Hart quipped, gripping her flamethrower as she checked her gear.
As the team entered the graveyard, the atmosphere grew heavier. The headstones were cracked, and the mausoleums looked like they hadn't been touched in centuries. A thick fog curled around their boots, swirling unnaturally.
"Movement!" Lila 'Huntress' Navarro hissed, raising her dual pistols. She pointed toward a freshly disturbed grave, the dirt trembling as something clawed its way to the surface.
Suddenly, a skeletal hand burst from the earth, followed by the decayed remains of what once was human. Its glowing, soulless eyes locked onto the team, and it let out a guttural, ear-piercing wail.
"Contact!" Marcus barked, firing his shotgun into the creature's head. The zombie collapsed, but its wail had awakened the graveyard. All around them, graves erupted as more undead clawed their way out.
"Brain, what the hell is causing this?" Marcus shouted into his comm.
Ethan 'Brain' O'Connor's voice crackled through the static. "There's a massive energy spike in the area. Something big is buried here, and it's calling them to rise."
"Fan-freaking-tastic," Derek 'Shield' Coleman muttered, raising his riot shield to block a charging zombie. With a swift swing of his baton, he crushed its skull.
Jenna unleashed a burst of flames, incinerating a cluster of undead. "They're coming out faster than we can drop them!"
Lila darted toward the far end of the cemetery, where the fog was thickest. "I think I've got something. There's a crypt emitting some kind of... glow."
The team rallied around her position, fighting their way through the horde. The crypt was ancient, its stone door adorned with strange symbols glowing faintly blue.
"Looks like we've found our source," Marcus said, kicking the door open.
Inside, a massive sarcophagus pulsed with an eerie light. Runes carved into its surface radiated energy, and the air felt electric.
"Brain, any idea what we're looking at?" Marcus asked.
Ethan's voice was grim. "That's not a normal coffin. It's more like a containment unit. Whatever's inside—it's alive, or at least active."
As if on cue, the sarcophagus began to tremble, the runes glowing brighter. The ground beneath them shook violently, and a deep, guttural roar echoed through the crypt.
"Fall back!" Marcus yelled.
But before they could retreat, the sarcophagus exploded, and a towering figure emerged—an ancient, armored zombie glowing with the same blue energy.
The creature roared, its voice shaking the very foundations of the graveyard.
"New plan," Marcus growled. "We end this, now."
