Chapter 24: An Argument with Fu Hua
After Kiana finished speaking, she and Shu fell into silence.
Shu didn't say anything. He only felt a burning sensation on the side of his face. He lowered his head, looking at the endless rubble around him. He bit his lip, then squatted down and started throwing away the rubble with Kiana.
Night fell. Silence and desolation permeated the ruins. Kiana and Shu made their way through the debris, looking for Mei, Bronya, and other survivors.
Shu's eyes were fixed on the surroundings, his eyebrows tightly furrowed, his face full of worry. He stopped, turned to look at Kiana, and asked in a low voice, "Kiana, do you know where Fu Hua is?"
"Class monitor? I found her." There was worry in Kiana's eyes. She sighed softly, and replied, "But class monitor is hurt. I left her in a relatively safe place. When I came back, this place was just a ruin."
Shu breathed a sigh of relief. Like he'd said before, having any news was better than none. At least Fu Hua was safe… The ones in danger were the two of them wandering around.
The walls were broken, and with such a huge commotion, the Dead-ites and zombies were probably already gathering, rushing into the academy through the breaches.
For the others, Shu could only hope they would run fast enough to their destination.
"Let's keep looking... If we can't find them, we'll go to our final destination. They might already be there."
Kiana silently nodded, her eyes shining with determination. She knew what Shu meant and was aware of the current danger, but she didn't want to give up on any possibility.
They continued walking through the ruins, carefully avoiding the dilapidated buildings and dangerous traps.
As the night grew darker, their steps grew more difficult.
Shu and Kiana searched through the ruins for a long time, but not until the moon appeared from behind the thick, black clouds did they finally give up. They returned to the "safe place" that Kiana had mentioned, their hearts filled with disappointment and frustration.
The so-called "safe place" was just a remote storage room filled with old sports equipment and desks, and not even a decent window.
As soon as Shu entered, he saw Fu Hua sitting on a soft cushion next to a fire pit, deep in thought. The flickering flames cast her shadow on the wall, showing a unique loneliness.
Kiana went to Fu Hua's side and patted her shoulder gently, saying, "Fu Hua, we're back."
Fu Hua looked up and saw Kiana and Shu. Her eyes flashed with a sense of joy that quickly turned into worry, "Shu, why are you here?"
She'd been told by Kiana that the others had already left. Why did Shu come back?
"I was worried about you, but I ended up being saved by Kiana…" Shu found a spot in front of the fire and sat down, laughing awkwardly.
Fu Hua was silent for a moment before saying, "It's fine, it's good that you're back safe…"
Shu wanted to tell her about Mei and the others, but he noticed Fu Hua's torn pant leg, her leg wrapped with white cloth and some wood. He stopped talking.
The white cloth was uneven. It was clearly a makeshift bandage that had been torn by hand. A large area of it had already been dyed dark red.
Shu looked at Fu Hua's face. Her pale complexion was hidden by the light of the fire, but her hands, which were on her lap, were clenched tightly and were shaking slightly.
"Oh, right, class monitor, your leg…" Kiana, who was tearing apart the desks to use as firewood, remembered something and asked Fu Hua.
"It's just a scratch, thank you for your shirt." Fu Hua said with a smile, and Shu couldn't hear any hint of pain.
Shu lowered his eyes. After a moment of silence, he suddenly said, in a serious tone, "We'll rest here tonight. Tomorrow morning, we'll take Fu Hua outside the city."
Fu Hua was surprised. "Shu, don't be so impulsive. We need to calm down and think…"
Shu looked at Fu Hua, and then through the flames, his gaze settled on her injured leg. "I know, but we can't waste any time."
Fu Hua pulled her leg back, but still said, firmly, "I understand how you feel, but we can't act blindly. You should also think about your safety and not put yourself in danger."
"Then tomorrow morning, our first stop is the school infirmary. This can't be delayed any longer!" Shu became even more determined. But after a moment of eye contact, Shu softened his tone, "Okay. What do you guys think?"
Fu Hua said, "I think you… we should rest first, recover our physical and mental strength, so that we can better face these things."
Shu didn't say anything. Instead, he stared straight at Fu Hua's leg. Then he lifted his head, his eyes dark, "You...?"
Fu Hua took a deep breath, averting his gaze.
"I said that we can't delay this and we just can't!" Shu stood up, his body was aching everywhere. "We're leaving tomorrow. I'll take care of everything! That's the decision!"
After saying that with a sharp tone, Shu turned around and went into the corner.
Kiana, with a stack of firewood in her arms, brushed past a silent Shu. Confused, she looked back at Shu as he sat in the corner. "What's wrong with him? Why is he suddenly so angry?"
Fu Hua opened her mouth, her hand touching the bandage on her leg. Finally, she let out a sigh.
"Let's rest, Kiana… We have a lot to do tomorrow…" Fu Hua said. She watched Kiana throw the firewood into the fire, before she shifted back and laid on her sports pad.
Kiana looked at them both with confusion and then glanced at the bandage on Fu Hua's leg. She sighed, checked the door to make sure it was locked, and then also climbed onto the pad. She curled up like a cat.
In the small room, the fire flickered, casting long shadows of the people within.
The soft sounds of the fire occasionally crackled, but they were gentle enough not to wake anyone. The fire that had been lit after the disaster was growing weaker, but it was still sending sincere blessings to those it illuminated.
Until the next daybreak.
