Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Chūnin Examination

— Konoha, 47 years —

"Ha--"

Uchiha Obito yawned widely.

"Lin, why did you drag me out so early in the morning?"

The door creaked open, and Obito squinted his eyes, rubbing the sleep from them with one hand.

Nohara Rin grabbed Obito's hand and smiled brightly, like the sun: "Hurry up, Minato-sensei is calling us to gather."

As soon as Obito saw Rin's warm smile, his sleepiness evaporated completely, and he felt a hundred times more energetic.

"Let's go!" he exclaimed.

A short while later, the two arrived at a small bridge over a gurgling stream. Kakashi had been waiting there for quite some time.

"Hey, it's strange that I'm not late today," Kakashi said, crossing his arms and looking at the other two.

"I think this must be Rin's influence; otherwise, someone would have slept until noon," Kakashi teased, turning his head towards Obito.

Obito scowled. "Kakashi... you really want to compete, huh?"

The "someone" in Kakashi's teasing words was, of course, Obito.

"I didn't name anyone, so don't get sensitive," Kakashi responded, spreading his hands innocently.

"Whoa whoa!"

If Rin hadn't held Obito back, he would have rushed at Kakashi in a heartbeat.

"Okay, okay, you two are really serious," Rin intervened, standing between them to keep the peace.

"Hmph. For Rin's sake, I'll let it slide this time. But next time, I won't be so lucky," Obito warned, though it was clear he was only half-serious.

Kakashi chuckled, unphased. "I don't think we'll need to wait for next time. Why not do it now?"

Obito was itching to test his skills against Kakashi, but they didn't end up fighting. With Rin mediating, the two ended up having fun instead.

It wasn't long before Namikaze Minato appeared.

With a flash of teleportation, Minato materialized in front of them.

"Minato-sensei!" the three greeted cheerfully.

Minato smiled and nodded, pulling out three documents from his sleeve.

"I have good news for all of you," he said, handing them the papers.

Minato had prepared Chūnin exam application forms for the three of them. As long as they were willing, they could participate in the Chūnin exam at any time. Passing it would mean becoming Chūnin.

Without hesitation, all three of them agreed to participate.

---

The first stage of the Chūnin exam was the written test.

For Kakashi, it was easy. He handed in his papers first and left the examination room.

Obito, on the other hand, was so nervous he couldn't answer most of the questions. But thanks to Rin's quiet assistance, he managed to pass.

A few days later, the second stage of the exam, the practical test, arrived.

---

At the entrance of the exam room, Kakashi and Rin were waiting for Obito, who still hadn't shown up.

"Only five minutes left..." Kakashi said, a touch of concern in his voice.

"If he's late, he'll forfeit his spot," one of the examiners explained.

"Wait a little longer," Rin said, trying to remain calm. "I'm sure Obito will come."

Kakashi sighed, still a little doubtful. "I'm worried he'll drag us down."

"No, Obito will definitely make it in time," Rin replied, sounding sure of herself.

Just as she finished speaking, a black vortex suddenly appeared before them.

Uchiha Obito, his eyes white with the Sharingan activated, stepped through the portal.

"Hey, Kakashi, I heard you talking behind my back," he said, grinning.

Kakashi stared in disbelief. "You… you learned the same space-time ninjutsu as Minato-sensei?"

Obito proudly raised a thumb to his chest. "You've already acknowledged I'm a genius. This is nothing."

"You're not that good!" Rin said, giving him a playful shove as she tried to hurry them along. "We need to get going. The exam is about to start!"

---

Inside the exam room, each candidate's opponent was revealed.

Obito's opponent? None other than the future blue beast of Konoha—Metkai!

"This guy Kai..." Obito muttered, sizing up his opponent. "You really can't underestimate a person. His potential is terrifying."

Metkai, the youth with thick eyebrows and a big smile, had mastered the Eight Gates technique to such a degree that even Uchiha Madara had praised him.

"The match begins!"

The examiner's voice cut through the tension.

"Aha!" Metkai shouted, rushing forward with a leg aimed at Obito's head.

But Obito, seemingly caught off guard, didn't react. He just stood still, looking confused.

"Obito!" Rin cried out from the sidelines.

Minato, watching from the monitoring room with the Third Hokage, held his forehead in his hand. "Obito's going to lose, isn't he?"

But the next moment left both of them speechless.

Obito had won.

At the decisive moment, Metkai's kick passed right through Obito, as if Obito's body had become a phantom.

The two had practically traded places in an instant, and Metkai was left wide-eyed with shock.

"Nani?" Metkai gasped.

The audience gasped too, watching in disbelief as Obito easily defeated Kai in one move.

"Minato, it seems your disciple has never used this ability before," Sarutobi Hiruzen said, bewildered.

Namikaze Minato, also stunned, shook his head. "I don't know. I've never seen Obito use this technique before."

"Could he have learned it recently?" the Third Hokage speculated.

"Maybe so," Minato said quietly, a hint of pride in his voice. "Obito's grown up."

---

After the match, Obito ran over to Rin with a smug grin plastered on his face.

"Super awesome, Obito!" Rin cheered, clasping her hands behind her back.

Obito, utterly pleased with himself, felt a rush of joy at Rin's adoring praise.

"Lin..." he muttered, his heart swelling.

Rin's praise was everything to him. She was his angel.

Just then, Kakashi's voice called out from behind them.

"Hey, what was that move you just pulled?"

Kakashi had easily defeated his own opponent, Ebisu, and returned to the audience.

Obito groaned inwardly, wishing he had more time alone with Rin. Still, he turned around to answer Kakashi.

"It's the Eye Technique, a natural ability of the Uchiha clan," he explained nonchalantly.

"Tongjutsu? You activated your Sharingan?" Kakashi asked, raising an eyebrow.

"But didn't you already have it activated? Why did it suddenly change?"

Obito was silent for a moment. Kakashi was right. He'd never mentioned this ability before, and even Obito himself was still getting used to it.

But he was glad that it had finally given him an edge.
