Chapter 199: Chapter 199: Dylan, Are You Dating Luna?

"Luna?"

Luna blinked and raised her eyebrows. "Well, what a coincidence."

Her eyes curved into crescent moons as she smiled. "We actually have the same name!"

Her Tawny Owl seemed to understand what was happening and tilted its head to glance at the snowy owl right beside it.

Dylan laughed awkwardly.

—He swore, when he named his owl Luna, it had never occurred to him that there was actually a person with that name at school.

Well, at least his owl's name was pronounced slightly differently... Lū-na instead of Loo-na. Close, but not quite.

Glancing at his owl's round, gleaming eyes, Dylan cleared his throat.

"Looking back on it, I guess it might not have been a coincidence. When I first saw Luna—my owl—I had a strong feeling she was really intelligent."

"—And if you think about it, doesn't she kind of have your eyes? A bit distant, like she's daydreaming, but also hiding so many thoughts behind them."

"So when I was thinking of a name, that was the first thing that popped into my head. Maybe it was fate?"

Luna laughed and pulled a nut from her pocket, offering it to the snowy owl.

Dylan's owl tilted its head, sniffed curiously, then gently tapped Luna's fingers with its beak, signaling for her to let go.

"Seems she doesn't mind sharing a name."

Huh?

Dylan froze.

Wait a second, shouldn't that be you minding?

Luna's eyes shimmered with amusement. "Or maybe you're right. Perhaps names carry a bit of magic we can't see."

Dylan watched as his snowy owl devoured the nut, then stood side by side with Luna's Tawny Owl on the perch.

One white, one brown.

One grooming its feathers, the other nibbling on a nut.

They looked as if they'd known each other forever.

—Actually, Dylan did vaguely recognize that Tawny Owl.

He'd seen it before when feeding his own owl.

He might've even tossed it a few scraps Luna didn't feel like eating.

"What's her name?"

"Mist."

Luna fished out another handful of sunflower seeds, shells still on.

Dylan glanced into her pocket.

—Wow, what a chaotic mess of stuff.

"They're nearly done eating. Have you had lunch yet?" Dylan asked.

"Not yet," Luna shook her head.

"Then let's go to the Great Hall together. After lunch, I've got some reading to do before my next class," Dylan suggested.

"Sounds good. I have some reading to do too—by the way, do you know any books that mention the Crumple-Horned Snorkack?" she tilted her head curiously.

"Uhh… no," Dylan paused and slowly shook his head.

"What about Wrackspurts? Or Heliopaths?" Luna continued.

Dylan's eye twitched. "Sorry, still no."

"That's alright. I'll look for them myself later, no need to feel bad," Luna replied.

Dylan: (.)

Wait… why would I feel bad? I don't even know what those are!

He took a deep breath.

Forcing a smile, Dylan said, "I'm sure you'll find them one day. As for now… let's go eat."

Whether those creatures were real or not, he didn't know.

He'd certainly never heard of them, nor had he ever heard of Luna finding any.

Still, Luna had an extraordinary gift for the spiritual and magical. Her magical intuition was sharp, almost unnervingly so.

If beings like the Crumple-Horned Snorkack existed on a plane invisible to others—like a Patronus, perhaps—then maybe one day she would find them.

But Dylan wasn't too interested in all that.

—After all, they probably wouldn't make good experimental material anyway.

And more importantly…

Food came first!

Luna nodded and walked beside Dylan toward the Great Hall.

When they arrived, the hall was already bustling.

Harry and Ron were seated at their usual table.

Neville waved Dylan over.

Then he noticed Dylan and a silver-haired girl entering the hall, one after the other.

When Dylan saw Neville wave, he only nodded in acknowledgment, then turned to speak quietly with the pretty girl beside him before they finally parted ways.

Dylan joined his friends at the Gryffindor table.

Neville glanced from Harry to the silver-haired girl walking off.

She seemed to be heading toward the Ravenclaw table.

"Hey Dylan, do you know that girl?" Neville asked.

Dylan nodded. "Met her while feeding the owls this morning. Turns out we named our owls the same—total coincidence—so we started talking."

—Which was true… just with the order of events slightly rearranged.

Neville assumed they met in the Owlery and talked on the way down.

"I see."

Hermione had also noticed the silver-haired girl walking with Dylan and felt… something she couldn't quite explain.

It wasn't exactly jealousy… but it wasn't comfortable either.

"You said her name's Luna? I've heard of her. People say she's kind of... weird. Do you two get along well?" Hermione asked.

Dylan raised a brow. "We just happen to have a lot in common when it comes to magical creatures. As for being weird…"

Ron, trying not to get involved, kept his head down and muttered, "People say you're weird too, Hermione…"

Hermione glared at him. "What was that?!"

Ron panicked and shook his head. "Nothing! I didn't say anything!"

Hermione stabbed her fork into a barbecue bun. Juices spurted out immediately.

Ron broke out in a cold sweat.

"I just met Luna recently, but I can tell she has a real talent for spiritual magic. If she learns Divination, you might want to take her predictions seriously," Dylan added.

Hermione pouted. "Divination is hardly worth the time."

Ron scratched his head. "Well, it was a prophecy that helped Harry defeat Voldemort, wasn't it?"

Hermione huffed and returned to her meal.

After lunch, everyone headed off to class.

...

Time flew.

It was already early October.

Dylan remained busy as ever—preparing birthday and holiday gifts, studying, learning new spells, and meeting with Dumbledore.

Though unlike other professors, Dumbledore didn't always stick to his scheduled lessons.

Sometimes he would cancel on Dylan! What exactly was the old man up to all day?

Still, Dylan made other arrangements during his free time.

He reminded the professors about creating portraits of themselves for his collection.

Professor McGonagall was the fastest. Her portrait was already in the "nurturing" stage.

Surprisingly, Snape wasn't far behind. He'd already completed the basic framework.

Professor Flitwick, despite being a Charms master, was a bit slower—his class load was heavy and covered a vast range of material.

But the slowest of all?

Dumbledore, of course.

The man didn't just delay their lessons—he hadn't even finished the initial sketch for Dylan's portrait!

Dylan didn't mind too much. He just wanted portraits of the professors to ask questions when needed.

Especially when it came to certain topics, like Dark Magic… he couldn't exactly ask McGonagall or Snape.

So he sometimes turned to Tom.

That guy was never cooperative.

It usually took a quick Avada Kedavra to get him to behave.

Still, Dylan never fully trusted Tom's answers. He treated them only as reference.

Who knew what traps Tom might embed in his suggestions?

Magical energy was dangerous. And Dylan had been trying to create new spells lately.

Most of his questions to Tom revolved around inventing dark spells.

Still, Dylan wasn't reckless.

Ask boldly. Verify carefully.

He wasn't chasing speed, but stability.

That was his motto.

He also met Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest sometimes, and occasionally bumped into Luna afterward.

Unfortunately, his recent attempts to spot a unicorn had failed.

He swore that if he saw one again, he'd mark it with a dark tracking charm!

Those creatures were always vanishing like Dumbledore himself.

Always disappearing when you needed them most!

...

One busy afternoon, after class, Dylan headed to the Great Hall with Neville and the others.

Luna had finished eating quickly and was just leaving as Dylan entered.

Her white-blond hair was tied in a rare loose low ponytail.

Instead of holding her wand, she'd tucked it behind her ear like a hairpin.

Carrot-shaped earrings dangled from her lobes, their bright orange adding color to her pale cheeks.

There was even a dandelion seed puff tucked behind her ear, glistening with dew, like fallen stardust.

Dylan waved. "Good afternoon! Love the look—it's really unique. Don't tell me your wand took a beauty course in secret?"

He grinned. "That hairstyle's fancier than Professor Flitwick's wig."

Their occasional meetings in the forest had made them more familiar, even if they rarely chatted during the day.

Luna looked up at him, her silver hair catching the doorway's light, eyes misty and bright.

She looked like some kind of fairy.

She tilted her head, brushing back a strand of hair. "It said it prefers being a hairpin to casting spells. I think that's fair. When I walk, I can hear the wind pass through its core."

Dylan chuckled—of course she meant her wand.

"Well then, I'll go eat. See you later."

Luna nodded, said nothing more, and walked off.

Neville, blinking rapidly, followed Dylan to the table.

Ron elbowed Dylan once they sat.

"Hey, seriously—she ate one of Hagrid's rock cakes. Without flinching. Are you two dating?"

Harry looked up, curious.

Hermione wasn't there—her class schedule was the most packed, and she was likely still on her way.

Harry, too, was curious.

Dating?

There were quite a few couples at Hogwarts.

He'd even once caught two students kissing in the bathroom—and had bolted in shock.

It made him wonder…

He couldn't even remember seeing his aunt and uncle kiss.

Did married people not like kissing anymore?

If Dylan was dating that silver-haired girl…

Had they kissed?

Dylan slid a plate of honey-roasted chicken and creamy mushroom soup in front of himself.

The drumsticks were still sizzling, the sweet scent of honey mingling with herbs.

The soup was topped with frothy milk and garnished with bright green parsley.

A nearby platter held sliced sausages, glistening with juices, paired with golden, buttered potatoes.

"Dating?"

Dylan looked at Ron. "What makes you think that?"
