Chapter 13: 13| The Chair, the Key, the Code
Lyra's POV
My breath…
So slow.
Trying to stay as quiet as I can.
Sweat…
Slowly dripping down my cheek.
I'm hiding.
Yes…
I'm hiding.
Anxiety spiking—
Skyrocketing out of my head.
Then—
The door opens.
Slow motion.
The sound.
The sight.
Even my thoughts can't catch up.
And then—
BIG WHACK.
I swing the chair.
It slams into Silas.
He drops the dinner bag.
Falls down on one knee.
He's hurt.
I don't stop—
I raise the chair again—
WHACK.
This time,
He stays down.
Not moving.
My heart's racing but—
I scan his body.
Now.
Keys…
There—
I found one.
A key.
Freedom.
I bolt.
Out the door.
Couple steps into the hallway.
Another door.
I unlock it fast—
Wrong room.
It's just storage.
Supplies for my room.
Things he stocked.
No time to stand here.
He might wake up.
He's not normal—
He's not human.
I run again.
Down the longer hallway.
Then—
The front door.
The last door.
Outside…
It's behind that door.
I run up.
Unlock it—
It won't open.
I look to my left—
A glowing screen.
A passcode.
Small gasp air out of mouth
"You've got to be kidding me…"
A passcode?!
After all this…
After everything…
All I need now is a stupid passcode?!
Maybe it's something important.
Maybe it's related to me.
But—
I don't remember anything about myself.
What do I do?
Should I go back…?
Tie him up…?
Then—
Sharp pain.
In my head.
It hurts.
So much.
And then—
A voice.
"Code can—"
I can't hear it clearly.
Pain.
Echo.
Muttering—
Until—
"Break."
Code…
Break…
Is the voice trying to tell me?
To figure out the code…?
But how?
Suddenly—
A memory.
That book.
The one Silas reads recently.
Maybe…
Maybe the code's in there.
I have to get it—
Before he wakes up.
I rush back—
He's still lying down.
I should tie him up.
Just in case.
I rip the bedsheets.
Tie both his hands behind his back.
Tie both his legs.
He can't escape…
Right…?
Then…
I look over at the table.
The book.
Sitting there.
Waiting.
A moment of truth—
Right in front of me.
