Chapter 5: " An Unexpected Encounter "
( In the afternoon, still in Siri's mother's hospital ) :;
( Inside the hospital):;
As The Elite and The Tops turned to leave, Wut's mom, Dr. Natt, emerged from the hallway, a warm smile on her face. "Nong Siri, Nong Chan, it's so great to see you both!" she exclaimed, greeting them with a friendly hug.
Siri and Chan exchanged a respectful glance, their eyes flicking briefly to Wut before they smiled and greeted Dr. Natt . "Dr. Natt, it's great to see you too," Siri said, her voice polite.
Chan nodded in agreement. "Yes, Dr. Natt. How are you?" His eyes darted to Wut, a hint of amusement dancing in their depths.
Wut rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Mae, what are you doing here?" he asked, though he already knew she worked at the hospital.
Dr. Natt's eyes sparkled. "Just finishing up my shift, dear. What about you? Where are you all off to?"
Wut shrugged. "We're going to wait outside."
Dr. Natt's expression turned serious. "Don't go anywhere, Wut. I need to talk to you for a minute."
Siri and Chan exchanged a curious glance. "We were just going to wait outside too," Siri said.
Dr. Natt nodded, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Okay, dear. I'll catch up with you both later."
Just as The Elite were about to leave, Siri's mom, Mrs. Som, emerged from a ward with two nurses behind her , as she sees them a stern expression appeared on her face. "Wait, all of you. Don't go anywhere." She orders .
" Let's continue later" she continues as they two nurses she was talking to, nodded and left .
" Khun Yai som" Dr Natt said as she respectful greeted her and so did the rest.
(NB: " Khun Yai" is a Thai honorific title used to address used to address older women or woman in positions of Authority similar to " Madam and Miss" in English )
The Elite and The Tops exchanged uneasy glances. "What's going on, Mae?" Siri asked.
Mrs Som's eyes narrowed. "I need to talk to all of you , Now." She continues " I will take it from here" she says instructing Dr Natt to leave which she did respectfully.
The Elite and The Tops hesitated for a moment before obeying, turning back towards the elevator , following Mrs Som .
As they walked, the tension between them was palpable. What did have planned, and will they be forced to return to Wit's room?, they wonder all through the ride,
They exited the elevator and headed down the corridor ,while making their way towards a room with a "Superintendent's office" sign, Mrs. Som led The Elite and The Tops to her office.
The room shrouded in gray tones. The walls, furniture, and even the carpet seemed to blend together in a monochromatic haze. As they entered, their eyes were drawn to a peculiar painting on the wall. It appeared to be a child's drawing, with crude lines and vibrant colors that seemed out of place in the otherwise drab room.
The walls were adorned with numerous photos of Yot, Siri's younger brother. His bright smile and sparkling eyes seemed to follow them around the room. However, there were no pictures of Siri herself. Siri's gaze drifted to a large, framed photo on the wall. It showed her mother and Yot standing together, smiling warmly at the camera. Siri's eyes remained fixed on the image, her expression unreadable.
Mrs. Som began to speak, her voice firm but controlled. "I'm sure you're all aware that Wit has been through a traumatic experience. We should be grateful that he's recovering well." As Mrs. Som continued to talk, Siri's attention remained focused on the photo. Her mother's words seemed to fade into the background.
The room was filled with an awkward silence, punctuated only by the occasional creak of the old furniture. The Elite and The Tops stood stiffly, their eyes fixed on Mrs Som as she spoke. Chan, who was standing beside Siri, glanced at her occasionally, his expression a mixture of concern and curiosity.
Suddenly, Mrs. Som's voice rose, snapping Siri back to reality. "Siri!" Chan gently nudged her with his elbow. Siri blinked, her eyes refocusing on the room. Mrs. Som's expression was stern.
"I was asking if you'd gone to see Wit. You need to show your support during this difficult time." Siri shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "No, Mae."
Mrs Som's disappointment was palpable. "Siri, I expect more from you. You and your friends need to go see Wit now. And don't even think about leaving until Wit and his mother have departed. You can help them with their preparations."
The Elite and The Tops exchanged uneasy glances. Mrs Som's tone left no room for argument. They knew that they had to comply with her instructions, no matter how uncomfortable it might be.
"Leave my office now," Mrs Som instructed, her eyes lingering on Siri. As they filed out of the office, Siri turned back to glance at the photo on the wall. Her mother's eyes met hers, and for a moment, they shared a silent understanding.
Mrs Som's gaze then shifted to a smaller, framed photo on her desk. A faint smile played on her lips as she gazed at the image, which remained hidden from the others. The photo seemed to hold a special significance for Mrs Som, and Siri wondered what it could be....
As they exited the office, The Elite and The Tops couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. They knew that they had to go see Wit, but they were not looking forward to it. The tension between them was palpable, and they knew that it would be a difficult encounter.
Siri walked ahead of the group, her eyes fixed on the floor. She seemed lost in thought, and the others didn't dare to disturb her. They followed her in silence, their footsteps echoing down the hospital corridor....
