Chapter 13: Meeting the destined Shadow Princess
Cassie had been looking for Rains's whereabouts with Jet since returning from the forgotten shore. Nephis had told her about her when Sunny told her he had a sister, and Cassie felt guilty that Sunny couldn't see her, so she'd do it for her. Today, Jet had finally found out where she lived by finding her file in the government. She had lived in a one-story house with her adoptive family ever since Sunny gave her away. Cassie had planned over a 1000 responses and dozens of plans to get close to her and keep her close to protect her. It's the least she could do for Sunny, for Neph she visited her mother and started caring for her every now and then.
Cassie took a deep breath, calmed herself down, and started walking towards the front door with Jet leading her. Jet and her spent a lot of time together so they were good friends now which Cassie greatly appreciated as she needed those. She had also learned why many Masters and even Saints feared her, it was because of her aspect. Not only did she have a supreme aspect - which was almost unheard of as only one other person had ever had one - but also because of what it is. It essentially allows her to attack the soul directly, ignoring all physical barriers.
Sadly though she was very talkative about her aspect and all and even told her flaw to the government to some extent as a sleeper. As a result, she was somewhat forced to join the government after which she would have willingly but she had told Cassie that she would've at least wanted to choose it herself. That's why she told Sunny not to spill all about his aspect and especially his flaw, and make friends though the latter was not achieved by him.
Cassie then thought back to all the progress she had made during the month and a half after escaping the forgotten shore. She anchored herself on the chain isles, uniting half the sleepers that escaped into a group called the Fire Keepers, and trying to find a way to reach Sunny and Neph. The last option was the hardest since there was no viable way of reaching them as the hollow mountains and the nightmare desert covered the path. She shook away the thoughts as they reached the door and Jet moved aside to let her knock gently on the door.
After some rumbling behind the door, and swearing she heard "Rain get the door" with a groan following it, the door opened. Of course, she already "saw" the door opening and hitting her on the face so she took a step back avoiding it. In front of her stood a perfect gender bend if Sunny was ever a girl, which he already kinda did with his long hair that he supposedly had according to Nephis. Long onyx black hair rained down her back as she wore a white shirt with brown shorts, perfect for the hot weather today.
"Hello I am-"
"OMG!" Rain squealed as she went up to Cassie and shook her hand giggling.
"I already know who you are Song of the Fallen, It's an honor to meet you but what are you doing in front of my house? Actually, just come inside it's rude if I don't."
Rain turned her head to the side after feeling a cold aura engulf her as she noticed a blue-eyed woman next to Cassie. 'Why do I feel like I've seen her somewhere-' immediately Rain's eyes shot wide open as her fangirling over Cassie swapped over to her.
"Y-your ascended Soul Reaper! I have your poster on my wall and your figurine, can you please give me an autograph I can't believe I'm meeting two famous awakened!"
"In a bit, Cassie and I have to explain our business here. I'm surprised that you're not even questioning why we're here, Yeesh I don't remember Sunny fangirling over me."
'Though he was a perv,' Jet silently thought.
"O-oh okay right this way you two."
Rain felt giggly but also nervous as they entered her house. Her house was painted ocean blue and had a large living room with a couch next to a big window displaying what's outside. There was a small table in front of the couch with cookies and chips laid out, helping herself she took two, one for her and the other for Cass who quickly ate it. They then went to sit down while Rain ran upstairs and soon after came back with a sheet of paper and a pen and asked for both of their autographs. Jet wrote hers down neatly, but Cassie... Cassie was having a hard time writing.
'God fucking damn it my blindness if fucking me over right now, this is embarrassing.' Cassie would rather write sloppily or miss the line where she would write in completely. Eventually, with the help of Jet guiding her hand, she was able to write her signature. Rain looked at the paper before putting it in a black folder and putting it to the side.
"S-so what b-bring you two here?"
Rain stuttered from the shock of meeting such famous people. Cassie debated in her mind for a few seconds on the best approach, whether she should tell her about Sunny or not, and what story she should come up with. After all, she couldn't tell Rain the truth as she would probably hate her for it. After a few more moments had passed Cassie once again opened her mouth and began to speak.
"Rain do you remember anything from your childhood?"
"Sorta but not really, I remember my mother holding me on an especially cold night. I also remember my mother crying after my father's death and my mother's death too. The last memory I have is being taken to an orphanage but I can't remember by whom."
Jet looked at Cassir expectantly for her to do what she needed to do. Cassie meanwhile was still debating as now she knew that Rain didn't remember having a brother, that would make things difficult in explaining why they wanted to take care of her. She was hoping that she did remember so she didn't take away Sunny's chance of telling her himself that he's her long-lost brother, but sadly she had to take that away from him too.
"Rain the person who brought you to the orphanage was a person named Sunny or Sunless, and he's your brother."
The clock ticking in the background suddenly sounded louder as the room fell into silence as Cassie finished her statement. After a few moments, Rain started chuckling and then laughing sweetly.
"That's a good joke Awakened Cassie it really is but I don't have a brother. My whole family from the outskirts is dead and I think I would've remembered if I did. And the person who brought me to the orphanage was probably just a kind pedestrian."
"Cassie's telling the truth, you do have a brother."
"If I did have a brother theoretically speaking, why has he not come looking for me?"
"He did try looking for you and he did find you. After he gave you away each day he spent in the outskirts was spent saving money. He eventually had enough to buy a private investigator and he found you. But...when he saw how happy you were from the big window showing the living room, he realized you didn't need him. Sunny thought that he would rescue you after he found you but he found out that you didn't need him the hard way so he...he walked away."
Rain squirmed a bit in her wooden chair and seemed to sink a little before saying.
"I guess that makes sense why he didn't see me before, but why can't he now? My parents surely wouldn't mind taking him in even if he is from the outskirts, although they would ask for a DNA test first to make sure he is who he says he is."
"Well," Jet leaned a bit towards Rain, a small frown formed on her face.
"Your brother is stuck in the dream realm. He was one of the few kids who got sent to the forgotten shore and survived going even up to the battle of the spire. But both he and Changing Star weren't able to reach the gateway before it collapsed."
"Wait my brother is the idiot, goofball Sunny from the movie A Path of Light and Darkness?"
"He's only a goofball at times, from what I heard he's crazy but dangerous." Jet said
"Jet is correct and I happen to know him personally. The movie does not give him enough credit, he's cunning, sharp, and if you're his enemy he will do anything to kill you. He even killed a Fallen Devil with the help of Nephis's cohort because it had gutted him and almost killed him so he's very petty too. He told us about you and I've been looking for you ever since I escaped the forgotten shore to offer you something."
Cassie pulled an envelope out of her pocket and handed it to Rain who carefully opened it. Pulling out a sheet of paper folded inside it delicately, she began reading and froze suddenly after reading the title, "Contract of Guardianship."
"You want to adopt me!?"
Jet who was drinking water did a spit take while Cassie started coughing while laughing from the absurdity of what Rain thought she had just said.
"No no, it's a contract to offer you me and Jet's protection - mostly Jet's since I'm not too good at fighting - in case anything bad comes to happen to you. Essentially we'll be your bodyguards for most of the day."
"Oh okay that makes sense...where do I sign?"
Jet pointed to a black line at the bottom where Rain put her signature in which looked fancy. Cassie had already thought of the pros and cons of this and decided the pros outweighed the cons, if only barely. Cassie and Jet would need to rotate shifts each day and make sure their schedule won't affect Rain's safety. It would be harder for Jet since the government loves to keep her busy but she pulled a few strings to get certain hours off each day. Cassie wasn't doing nearly as much as Jet each day so she would be with Rain most days though she would call Jet in case fighting needed to be done.
Cassie wasn't a terrible fighter, in fact, her skill is above average above normal awakened. With her ability to see the future, she could once again be able to fight. And since she was able to see the future she can almost perfectly win every fight unless the enemy is too skilled or strong that even with her ability she's destined to lose. That had only happened with Effie but it could hardly be called a fair fight since compared to Effie's combat skill she was a toddler. She trained with Effie at least 4 times a week and her being a fencer before becoming blind helped defend against her constant ambush of attacks. So it wasn't out of the question that she could defend Rain adequately.
Cassie gave Rain a few more papers she needed to sign which she did with a grin. 'God she's lucky we don't have any bad intentions because she isn't even reading what she's signing.' Cassie didn't have any bad intentions but it wouldn't be a bad idea to also teach Rain. Since Sunny was infected with the spell she is a lot more likely to get infected too. So Cassie wanted to train Rain on how to fight, survive the wild, and most importantly do be crafty. 'And also teach her to read the fine print,' Cassie added silently to the list in her thoughts.
Eventually, Rain finished signing the papers so Cassie asked her to call for her parents. When they came in Cassie informed them of what she wanted to do with their child and if they would give permission...it was easier said than done. They quickly signed the papers - after reading the fine print luckily - but had a few questions as expected. Cassie turned off her ability to not confuse the past and present and accidentally answered their questions ahead of time, It was very embarrassing when she did.
"So you want to protect our daughter, teach her things to prepare her in case she gets infected, and all for free?"
"Yes, Mr. Willburg we intend to do all this for your daughter as stated in the documents."
"Well then I'm glad and thank you for giving us this offer, I think it's best you go now to not waste any more of your valuable time." Ms. Willburg said all five of them made their way outside the door.
Once outside rains family waved them off as Jet and Cassie did the same before getting out of sight. Immediately Cassie breathed a sigh of relief she didn't know she was holding as she allowed her shoulders to relax. Jet had already practiced being polite and professional so she didn't show the same reaction as Cassie but she still let out a quiet sigh, after all, they both were tense the whole time. Cassie wasn't completely sure they would accept their offer and much less Rain believing them about her having a long-lost brother. But luckily it ended off great.
They entered the PTV Jet owned as she began to drive.
"Jet give me your communicator, I need to call Effie and Kai to come to my parents' house, I need to discuss something with you three that is urgent and important."
Cassie had introduced Jet to Effie and Kai a few days after leaving the Forgotten Shore. They had surprisingly gotten along with each other and they had even gone out as a group, with Kai's wallet each time of course. Jet had also become more interactive and less cold around them the more they hung out until her cold aura and her being cold disappeared completely. It had reminded her of nephis when she had first met her, before realizing she's just socially awkward.
"Okay here you go," Jet passed her something that felt a bit cold and metallic.
Cassie...struggled using the communicator and couldn't even put in her password. Actually, she didn't even know Jet's password and a slight blush of embarrassment appeared on her cheeks. Too embarrassed to ask Jet for her passwords she tried doing a clever trick with her ability to guess it. Each time she thought of a set of numbers and thought about putting them in and the future would show the result. Eventually, she got a future where she got it right so she put in the code and finally got in. She then clicked at random until she reached the contact app and then clicked on Effie's communicator number.
It rang once, then again, then again, but on the fourth ring she picked up.
"Hey Jet, how's it going?" Cassie could hear talking in the background and heard Effie crunch on what she guessed was a chicken wing.
"Actually it's Cassie, I'm using Jet's phone and I'm calling to let you know that I have something important and urgent to tell both you and Kai, so please be at my parents' house in a few minutes."
"Sure no problem but only after I finish my lunch. A girl's gotta eat you kno- hey don't touch my fries kiddo! - Sorry about that a kid tried to take my fries but I'll be there in about 10 minutes."
"Sounds good, bye Effie."
"Bye Cassie,"
Cassie hung up the phone and then clicked Kai's number and after it rang once he
answered
"Hey Jet, what's up?"
"Nope, Cassie here and I'm wondering if you can go to my parents' house in about 10 minutes so you can meet Effie there?"
"Sure no problem I just have to do a couple of things and then I'll fly over."
Cassie hung up the communicator and handed it back to Jet who was driving at a steady pace. Cassie however was deep in thought thinking of the two most recent visions she had gotten. One was of a majestic white tower on top of a beautiful island. The flowers bloomed and there were many varieties of them as they spread throughout the island and there was even a peaceful shining blue lake on the right side of the tower. On the left a dragon's skeletal remains were wrapped around the tower, seemingly undisturbed for centuries.
There was a meadow on the side of it, a grove, and a graceful gazebo built of the same white material as the Ivory Tower itself. Looking down you could see what Cassie guessed was the Chained Isles. The Chained Isles looked like pieces of a beautiful mosaic that someone had laid out on the backdrop of velvety darkness, with a scattering of radiant stars shining in between.
At the center of it all was the white tower, its magnificent pagoda built out of flawlessly white material that was neither stone nor wood. It stood well over 300 feet and about 50 feet wide, Cassie had named it the Ivory Tower because of its color and beauty. The Ivory Tower was beautiful, graceful, and slightly surreal, as if too sublime to exist in the mortal realm. The island on which it stood was very small, barely wider than the base of the tower itself, and surrounded by drifting slabs of shattered marble. Seven broken chains hung from the soil of the island.
Despite the beauty and serene scenery, Cassie felt something eerie about it which she was right to suspect. As soon as she opened the door to go inside she felt the feeling grow stronger and she realized what she felt, the Call of Nightmare. She had discovered a Nightmare seed inside the ivory tower which was huge since normally they wouldn't find it in time and cause a gate to open in the waking world. As soon as she opened the door and discovered the seed the vision ended.
The second vision showed a seed but not a Nightmare seed but nor a normal one. It felt...magical, like it had magical properties and released a steady stream of essence.
She also saw that far far away there was a crashed ship in the middle of the chain isle that she assumed was Shipwreck Island. At the heart of Shipwreck Island, a large wooden ship lay broken on the ground. It must have been beautiful and magnificent once, but now, all that remained of its former glory were the fluid lines of the graceful and narrow hull. The ancient wood somehow remained untouched by the passage of time, but the bow of the ship was completely shattered. There were also large breaches here and there along the length of the wreck, with green vines covering large sections of it. At the tall mast of the ship, a dead, withered tree coiled around it, its naked branches stretching into the sky like bones.
But there was a haze merging with the ship which showed what the Ship must've looked like before. It was like the broken ship but with the hull fully fixed and all of its wooden parts were shining in the night sky. But what had caught Cassie's attention was the tree that stood dead center in the ship. On the ground around the tree were ruins that emitted ancient power and Cassie could feel that the tree was powering the ruins' enchantments. What also surprised her was that the ship was…flying. 'The tree must be empowering the enchantment that allows it to fly.'
Lastly, she saw that under the isle and deep into the void there were divine flames like Nephis's flame but stronger and much more of it burning down there. But there was a small pit in the middle of it all, it wasn't a very big pit but big enough that maybe a ship could cross through it.
After learning some more about the isle that was at the dead center - from locals of the Chain Isles - she had been able to make a plan. Of course, she needed her friends and the Fire Keepers for it to work but she had already told the Fire Keepers so all that was left was to tell the cohort about it. Eventually, Jet started to slow down and parked the PTV in front of her house. They got out and made their way to the porch where Effie and Kai had been waiting for them.
"Took you two long enough, I hope you have snacks here because I'm hungry."
"That never changes," Cassie muttered to herself.
"What was that?"
"Nothing! Let's just go inside now."
Cassie pulled out her keys and opened the door to let them in. The house was empty because her parents were out doing...she actually wasn't sure what but it didn't matter as she was just happy they were out. They made their way to her room where Kai closed the door as Cassie summoned a flute that was similar to Casters as a noise cancellation bubble formed around them.
"So Cassie what do you need to tell us that is very urgent?" Effie said while eating peanuts out of a bag.
"Well I have just discovered a Nightmare seed in the Chain Isles, and I know of a way to reach it."
"Know a way?" Kai said in a questionable tone.
"Yes I'll need to do some preparation and will take around a year before we can challenge it I estimate. Firstly the seed is located inside the Ivory Tower which is floating above the Chain Isle."
"I can just fly us all into the flying tower then."
This got a slap from Jet and a deathly glare from her too.
"If you want us to die then sure fly us over there. There's something called the crushing in the Chain Isle where if you go too high you'll be crushed to death. Cassie, you've probably seen it in a vision but how will we bypass the Crushing to reach it?"
"Well I'm not certain for sure but I think there's something under Shipwreck Isle that will help us reach it. But Kai before you say you can fly us down just know there are divine flames more powerful than Nephis's down there that will burn us into ash."
Kai gulped and Effie coughed out and choked on her peanuts but Cassie ignored them and continued.
"There's... a way to reach down there, a ship. Me and the Fire Keepers will try to locate a seed that will power the ship's enchantment to fly. However…"
Cassie turned to each of them before continuing,
"I will need you three to defeat a corrupted Monster hiding in the cargo of the ship. I think you three can do and I'll send someone with you who can possess fire to help with the vines. I don't know much about the creature other than knowing it's some type of vine creature so most likely you'll have to kill its source in the cargo."
"Sounds easy enough then, I know tough and battle built you forgotten Shore kids are, and I even heard you guys killed a fallen which is unheard of."
"Yep, I remember that Spire, it broke my shield so I replaced it with its treasure from Sunny." A small smile formed on Effie's lips as she reminisced about her time with Sunny. She found herself doing that often because she missed bullying him for his height and strength.
"Alright then me and the fire keepers will move out to find the seed in about a month. You three will need to travel to the Chain Isle soon, meet up, and plant your anchors in the Sanctuary of Noctis. I will also go to the Night Temple to retrieve something important to our quest."
Cassie had received another vision that was vague but showed an obsidian knife in what appeared to be the infamous Night Temple. Cassie knew that the Night Temple didn't have a great reputation and was mysterious but she needed that knife so it didn't matter. She didn't feel the need to tell them about it since it barely qualified as a vision and she was sure they wouldn't ask. They knew how much her visions affected her and even her True Name stated it.
The four of them talked some more and formulated a more solid plan, it was well into the night when they were done so Kai took Effie to her parents' house and Jet drove back to her place. All alone Cassie started cleaning her room and picked up the peanut packets off the floor Effie left. Cassie knew how difficult this would all be but Cassie was confident that she would succeed. 'I also need to be stronger, I can't be slacking off while Sunny and Neph are stuck in the dream realm. Maybe as a Master, I'll find a way to rescue them. I hope they're doing well but I have a feeling that they're doing alright…as much as one can be while being stuck in the Dream Realm.'
Cassie soon fell asleep but had a weird dream of Sunny and Neph…cuddling?
***
No modret this time I since it's very unlikely that Cassie with anyone else would survive since Sunny got lucky and used trickery to survive.
