HEARTS OF DIVINE RUIN (The MoonGoddess and The AlphaKing)

Chapter 31: Chapter 30: A Hell Lord's Gift

Luna sat perched on the wide windowsill of her room, her legs folded neatly beneath her as the silver light of the full moon bathed her in an ethereal glow. The playful energy from the afternoon chatter was gone, replaced by a somber stillness as she gazed out at the night sky. Shadows danced across her face, accentuating the deep lines of thought etched into her expression.
Tonight, the moon seemed impossibly close, watching her like a silent sentinel—perhaps a reminder of who she once was, or perhaps a warning of what was to come.
Her fingers traced idle patterns on the cool glass, and she exhaled softly, her breath fogging the pane. The delicate white mist faded quickly, just as fragile and fleeting as the thoughts racing through her mind. So much had been said downstairs—plans laid out in detail for Lucifer, the pieces on the board positioned with perfect precision. Yet no matter how meticulous her strategy, Luna knew there were too many variables, too many anomalies that could disrupt everything.
The end was fixed—she was certain of that. As long as she was alive, that man could not touch her people. But if even the slightest thing went wrong... a dark shiver ran through her. Her people—her wolves—would suffer. Not annihilation, no. He couldn't do that, not while her divinity existed, whether she was alive or dead. But casualties... even the thought made her chest tighten.
Her mind replayed the image of that dreadful prophecy with perfect clarity. Every gruesome detail, every twisted possibility that had haunted her for centuries. She had considered a thousand other routes, searching for some other way, any other way to circumvent his plans. But every single one ended the same way: failure. Except this.
A deep sigh escaped her lips. There was no returning now. No going back to the goddess she used to be, no reclaiming what was lost. She had severed that part of herself the moment she chose this path. The only way now was forward.
Her gaze shifted slightly, landing on the thin wall separating her room from the one next door. Alex's room. His presence was a constant hum at the edge of her senses, like a heartbeat she couldn't quite tune out. She had been debating all evening whether to go to him or not. Her mind drifted back to their conversation earlier from the afternoon, to the way his eyes softened when he asked to join her on this 'human adventure.'
And she—goddess that she once was—had said yes.
But the reality was different. He deserved peace and quiet—a chance to live the simple life he longed for, far away from the chaos and bloodshed that had once ruled his world. After Davina, after everything, he deserved better. And the life she could offer him was anything but quiet or peaceful.
They would have to part ways after all this was what she promised him once. Tonight might be the last time they were under the same roof, walking the same path. Her chest tightened painfully at the thought, but she forced herself to breathe through it. It was better this way. For both of them.
A sudden knock at her door jolted her from her thoughts. She blinked, momentarily disoriented, before calling out, "Who is it?" . Alex ? she wondered in her mind.
"It's me." Lucifer's voice. Low and calm, but edged with something she couldn't quite place.
Curiosity piqued with a little dissapointment as it was not the person she was expected it to be, Luna slid off the windowsill and moved to the door. She pulled it open to find him standing there, his normally pristine hair tousled as if he'd run his hands through it one too many times. His eyes, usually sharp and discerning, were clouded with something she couldn't read.
"Lucifer?" she asked softly, brows furrowing. "What are you doing here?"
Instead of answering, he held something out to her—a dagger, its blade gleaming with an unnatural, almost sinister light. The handle was inlaid with intricate patterns of dark, coiling snakes, each one so finely carved it looked almost alive. Astaroth. The blade that summoned—a beast known as one of the Great Dukes of Hell, part of the unholy trinity with Beelzebub and Lucifer himself.
Luna took an involuntary step back. "What...?"
"Take it," he said quietly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "It might come in handy."
Her eyes widened, and she shook her head, looking at him in disbelief. "I—I can't. You know what this is, what it does. This... this could fall into the wrong hands and—"
"And bring ruin to the world?" he finished for her, raising an eyebrow. "Yes, I'm aware. But Astaroth isn't some mindless creature. He knows who to obey and who to destroy."
Luna hesitated, staring at the blade. "But... why give it to me?"
Lucifer's expression softened, but there was a grim determination in his eyes. "Because I can't help you directly. But I can't let you walk into this death mission alone, either. Consider it a... precaution."
"Death mission?" Luna whispered, swallowing hard. "Lucifer, I—"
"Just take it," he murmured, stepping closer. "And bring it back to me safely, or I'll make you take Astaroth's place in Hell myself."
Her eyes widened at the unexpected threat, but the corners of Lucifer's lips quirked into a smirk before softening. "I'm serious, Luna. Use it only when you're out of options. It won't let you down."
"But—"
"What do you mean by 'death mission'?" A chilling voice cut in from behind them.
Luna froze, her breath catching in her throat. Slowly, she turned to see Alex standing in the doorway, his tall frame rigid with tension. His eyes, usually a calm, quiet storm, were dark and filled with a seething anger she hadn't seen in a long time.
"Alex," she breathed, taking a step back instinctively. He wasn't supposed to hear this. He wasn't supposed to know.
Lucifer glanced between them, his expression unreadable. "Well, this is awkward."
"What are you two talking about?" Alex demanded, stepping into the room, his gaze locked onto Luna's face. "What death mission?"
Luna tried to summon a smile, but it faltered. "It's— It's nothing, really," she stammered, desperately trying to sound casual. "Just—"
Lucifer sighed dramatically, stepping between them. "You two can have this friends cum lovers' quarrel somewhere else. I've done my part. Luna . Now may you both excuse me - My lovely wife is waiting for me." he held out the dagger once more, his eyes piercing. "Take it. Please."
Luna glanced between the two men—one radiating a fury that shook her to her core, the other watching her with a strange mix of worry and exasperation. Finally, with a deep breath, she reached out and wrapped her fingers around the hilt of the blade.
"I'll bring it back," she murmured softly, meeting Lucifer's gaze.
"You'd better," he replied, voice low. "Or I'll come drag you back myself."
She nodded as he left , then turned to Alex. His eyes were still blazing with anger, but beneath it, she saw something else—something raw and terrified.
