Chapter 142: Karina's Solo Show
The room was tense as Karina, Catherine's fiery sister, paced back and forth, her fingers tapping impatiently on the wooden table. Tariq sat slumped in a chair, his face pale and his eyes downcast. David, sitting quietly nearby, sipped his tea, observing the scene with a mix of curiosity and concern.
"So, Catherine might still be alive?" Karina asked, her voice sharp and demanding.
Tariq nodded weakly, his usual bravado completely gone. "We didn't find her body. There's a chance she's still out there."
Karina's eyes narrowed, and she slammed her hand on the table, making the teacups rattle. "You useless fool! You said you took care of those werewolves, and now look what's happened! If you had just been braver, if you had confessed to Catherine sooner, none of this would've happened!"
Tariq didn't respond. He just sat there, his shoulders hunched, looking like a man who had lost everything.
Karina glared at him for a moment longer, then pointed to the door. "Get out. I can't stand the sight of you right now."
Tariq stood up slowly, his head still bowed, and shuffled out of the room. David watched him go, feeling a pang of sympathy for the man. He turned back to Karina, who was now pacing again, her hands clenched into fists.
"I'm so angry I could scream!" Karina muttered, her chest heaving with each breath. She stopped abruptly and turned to David. "And you? Who are you?"
"Ron," he replied calmly. "I'm a friend of Tariq's."
Karina raised an eyebrow. "A friend? I didn't think he had any. Well, at least he's got one now." She sighed and sat down, her energy seemingly drained. "I'm Karina. Catherine's sister—well, not by blood. I was adopted by their family."
David nodded, sensing that Karina needed to talk. "Catherine sounds like a wonderful person."
"She is," Karina said, her voice softening. "She's always been kind, gentle. She wouldn't hurt a fly. And now…" Her voice trailed off, and she shook her head. "We need to find her. We need to make those werewolves pay."
David agreed. "We've been searching for days, but we haven't found any leads yet. Do you know anything that could help us?"
Karina thought for a moment, then stood up. "I'll join you. We'll search together. But first, you two need to rest. There are rooms upstairs. We'll start fresh tomorrow."
---
The next morning, the trio set out to track down the werewolves. Their search led them to another village that had been attacked, and eventually, they cornered a group of werewolves in a dense jungle. The werewolves were boasting about their exploits, but they were no match for Karina's fury and David's skill. The group was quickly subdued.
Karina interrogated the werewolves, her wand pressed against the head of a skinny, trembling wizard. "Have you seen this woman?" she demanded, holding up a photo of Catherine.
The wizard shook his head frantically. "No, no, I haven't!"
Karina's eyes narrowed. "What about the others? Do they know anything?"
The other werewolves, tied up and terrified, also denied any knowledge of Catherine. Karina's frustration grew, but she kept her cool. "How do you communicate with your leader? How do you find each other?"
The skinny wizard stammered, "We… we have marks on our arms. The leader can find us through them."
Karina yanked up the wizard's sleeve, revealing a skull tattoo. "This?" she asked, her voice icy.
The wizard nodded. "Yes, but we can't use it to find others. Only the leader can."
Karina sighed and stood up. "You're all useless." With a flick of her wand, the ropes binding the werewolves tightened, lifting them off the ground and hanging them from a tree branch. The werewolves gasped and struggled, but Karina turned away, her expression cold.
"Let's go," she said to David and Tariq. "They're not worth our time."
---
Days turned into weeks, and still, there was no sign of Catherine. The trio searched tirelessly, but the trail had gone cold. Finally, Karina called a halt to their search.
"You two need to go back," she said, her voice firm. "Tariq, you need to tell Pavel what's happened. After your sales meeting, I want all of you to come back and help us find Catherine. Do you understand?"
Tariq nodded, his face set with determination. "I'll make sure they come. We'll find her."
Karina gave him a long, hard look, then nodded. "Good. Now go."
---
David and Tariq returned to the R organization's hidden base, a labyrinth of caves deep in the mountains. Tariq led David through the winding tunnels, past guards and glowing stones, until they reached a small, cozy room.
"This is where you'll stay," Tariq said, gesturing to the room. "I'm across the hall if you need me. But first, I need to talk to Pavel."
David nodded and settled into the room, his mind racing. "How am I going to get this information to Newt? And what about Tariq? Can I really trust him?"
Meanwhile, Tariq entered Pavel's office, where his brother sat surrounded by stacks of documents. Pavel looked up, his face lighting up with relief. "Tariq! Where have you been? I thought you'd been kidnapped!"
Tariq smiled weakly. "I'm fine. But I need your help. After the sales meeting, I need some men. Catherine's missing, and we need to find her."
Pavel's expression darkened. "What happened?"
Tariq explained everything, his voice heavy with guilt. When he finished, Pavel leaned back in his chair, his face thoughtful. "Take Sori and Ion with you. Leave me a few men. We'll find her."
"But what about your plans?" Tariq asked.
Pavel waved a hand dismissively. "They can wait. Family comes first."
Tariq nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "Thank you, Pavel."
As Tariq left the office, David sat in his room, staring at the ceiling. The stakes were higher than ever, and the clock was ticking. "We'll find Catherine", he thought. "And we'll stop those werewolves. No matter what it takes."
