Chapter 116: Dinner
David had clearly refused Jason's earlier offer, but that didn't stop Jason from trying again.
On the way back, Jason kept insisting they visit his house for dinner, excitedly describing Anna's authentic Romanian cooking. He was so persistent that David eventually agreed, curious about the local food Jason spoke of so fondly.
The moment David gave in, Jason's face lit up with triumph. He waggled his eyebrows playfully, reminding them not to forget before pressing his broom forward. With a gust of wind, he sped ahead, no doubt rushing to inform Anna about their dinner guests. After all, he hadn't exactly asked her permission first.
Back at the wooden house, David told Newt about the dinner invitation. Newt's face brightened, and he praised Anna's cooking, joking that he'd better work hard and build up an appetite so he could eat as much as possible.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, David's stomach rumbled loudly. He'd only had a small pie that Newt tossed his way at lunchtime before diving back into his work. That tiny pastry was nowhere near enough to satisfy his hunger.
David sprawled out on a wooden chair, his gaze drifting toward Newt's workspace. "Grandpa, are you done yet?" he called, his voice tinged with impatience.
"Just a few more minutes," Newt replied, his voice slightly muffled. "Almost finished."
David sighed and sank deeper into his chair, closing his eyes as he waited. Those "few minutes" stretched into half an hour before David felt a light tap on his shoulder.
Blinking his eyes open, he saw John standing beside him, freshly changed out of his work clothes and looking crisp in a casual short-sleeved shirt. "David, let's go. Sir's done now," John said with a grin.
Yawning and stretching, David stood up, his body stiff from the wait. As they reached the door of Newt's workspace, Newt emerged, his hand pressed to his lower back as he groaned softly.
David hurried over and took the heavy case Newt was carrying. "Here, let me help," he offered, hammering his fist gently against Newt's back to ease the stiffness.
"Yes, yes, right there," Newt sighed in relief, letting David's makeshift massage work its magic as they made their way to Jason's house.
Before they even reached the door, a loud voice boomed from inside. "Welcome, welcome!"
Jason burst out of the house, his heavy footsteps thudding on the wooden porch. An apron was tied around his waist—one that was clearly too small, making him look slightly ridiculous. When he noticed David's amused stare, Jason flushed and hastily tore off the apron, tossing it aside.
"I was just... helping out a bit," Jason muttered, his sheepish grin betraying his embarrassment.
David chuckled and followed Jason inside. The layout of Jason and Anna's home was similar to Newt's—a central living room surrounded by various rooms. But unlike Newt's utilitarian space, this house was bursting with life and warmth.
Photos adorned the walls, each one capturing a different memory of Jason and Anna. They were rarely alone in the pictures; always side by side, smiling. David even recognized a few locations from different countries, realizing that the couple must love traveling.
Potted plants sat in the corners, their vibrant green leaves giving the room a cozy, lived-in feel.
"Nice, isn't it?" Jason beamed. "Anna decorated everything."
"It's very warm and welcoming," David admitted, genuinely impressed.
Jason's smile grew even wider at the compliment, just as Anna appeared from the back room, her own apron tied neatly around her waist. "Come on in, everyone!" she called warmly, leading them to the dining room.
David's jaw dropped as he entered the room. The ceiling was enchanted with a starry sky, reminiscent of the Great Hall at Hogwarts. Soft candlelight mingled with the golden hues of the setting sun streaming through the windows, giving the room a magical, romantic glow.
The table was piled high with plates of food, each dish looking more delicious than the last. In the center was a platter of stuffed cabbage rolls, packed with beef and aromatic spices. Nearby, a plate of grilled minced meat rolls released a mouthwatering aroma. The little rolls, made of minced pork and beef mixed with herbs, were no bigger than a thumb and meant to be eaten with mustard and bread.
There were several other Romanian dishes spread across the table, their rich scents making David's stomach grumble in anticipation.
After thanking Anna and Jason for the meal, they all sat down. Newt and John sampled some local white wine, while David settled for a glass of juice, too focused on his rumbling stomach to care much about the drinks.
The food was incredible. Each bite was bursting with flavor, and David was sure he'd never tasted anything so delicious. He barely lifted his head from his plate, too busy stuffing his mouth to engage in conversation.
As the evening went on, Newt's cheeks turned rosy from the wine, his speech growing more animated. David was almost certain Newt was tipsy enough to agree to whatever Jason suggested—probably even about David's future career. Luckily, Jason wasn't much better at holding his liquor, and Anna wisely removed the wine before either man could get too carried away.
With the alcohol gone, Jason's enthusiasm didn't wane. He launched into the story of how he and Anna met, his voice filled with nostalgia.
They had grown up as neighbors in France, attending Beauxbatons Academy of Magic together. Anna had been known as a potions prodigy, while Jason was a star Quidditch player.
Their future paths had seemed set—Anna would pursue potions, and Jason would go pro in Quidditch. But in his final year, Jason visited a dragon farm and fell in love with the creatures. Determined to work with dragons, he moved to Romania. Anna, not wanting to be apart from him, gave up her potions dreams and followed him.
Over time, Anna found joy in working with dragons, using her potions expertise to develop better nutrition potions and remedies for their ailments. She became an irreplaceable member of the dragon farm, even more valuable than Jason.
As Jason spoke, Anna sat quietly beside him, a soft smile on her face and love shining in her eyes.
The dinner lasted well into the night, filled with laughter, stories, and the lingering taste of Romanian delicacies.
When they finally stepped outside to head home, the sky above was sprinkled with stars, just like the enchanted ceiling inside.
Before they parted ways, Jason reminded David of their plan for tomorrow. He would take David to see Norbert—the dragon Hagrid had once cared for at Hogwarts.
"Oh, by the way," Jason added, his eyes gleaming with mischief, "We tried changing Norbert's name to Norberta when we realized she's actually a girl... but she didn't like it. Got all grumpy, so we stuck with Norbert."
David laughed, imagining the dragon's stubbornness. Of course, after being called Norbert for so long, it wasn't about to let anyone change its name.
With that, they waved goodbye to Jason and Anna, their hearts warm and their stomachs full. The stars twinkled above as they made their way back, David's mind buzzing with anticipation for tomorrow's adventure.
