Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Morning Star
Inside the dimly lit Potions office, Link and Snape were seated upright on opposite sides of the desk.
They had maintained this posture for quite a while already.
At first, Link thought Snape was going to lecture him, so he put on a solemn and attentive expression.
But later on, Link simply stopped pretending and began checking the potions on his "equipment belt" on his own.
He had already prepared to end this long farce tonight. And before that, preparing for battle was a must.
"Do you know what you're doing?" Snape's cold voice, without the slightest emotional fluctuation, suddenly rang out.
This caused Link's hand, which was testing the tightness of the potion bottle stoppers, to pause slightly.
"Then do you know what I'm doing?" Link somewhat rudely countered.
Hearing this, Snape's brows furrowed, but he said nothing.
"You probably even know what I'm about to do next, don't you?" Link softly said as he pushed the stopper back into the bottle.
Yet this time, Snape still remained silent.
"Is it Dumbledore's idea again? What exactly does he want me to do?"
Still, Snape was silent.
Looking at Snape, who kept his head down and said nothing, Link suddenly felt a little irritated. Of course, this irritation wasn't directed at Snape, but at Dumbledore.
Link wasn't an idiot. Dumbledore had been missing for so long, and Snape's and Professor McGonagall's attitudes recently had been so strange, this clearly meant that Dumbledore was scheming something.
Although he didn't know Dumbledore's goal, wanting Link to go alone and face Tom Riddle head-on was definitely what Dumbledore wanted to see.
This, Link had just confirmed from probing Snape's response.
Taking a few deep breaths, Link strapped the checked equipment belt around his waist, then got up and walked toward the office door.
And just as Link pushed open the door, Snape lifted his head and looked at Link.
"Link, you'll be okay."
Hearing this, Link's movements paused slightly, but in the end, he didn't respond, and pushed the door open and walked out.
Bang!
The door closed softly again.
Snape sat alone in the silent office, and couldn't help but cover his face with one hand.
Earlier, when Link came to the office with Snape, he had already noticed, tonight's moon phase was a rare waning crescent.
Now, as he left the office and walked again through the corridor, Link indeed saw that in the night sky outside, the moon was only a thin sliver still barely hanging in the sky.
As if it had been embarrassed by Link's gaze, that sliver of crescent moon simply hid itself behind a giant dark cloud sweeping quickly across the sky and didn't come out again for a long time.
'Mm, dark moon and high winds, a good day for killing.'
Satisfied with watching the moon disappear, Link nodded approvingly, then continued walking forward.
But he had barely taken a few steps before he was once again drawn in by the scene ahead.
In the faint moonlight, Emily was standing near the edge of a wide, open arched window sill, focused intently on looking up at the sky.
A gust of night wind blew in from outside the window, playfully lifting her now-black hair, and then giggling as it rushed back into the castle interior.
"Ah, the moon is gone." Emily reached out to smooth her wind-blown hair and said cheerfully.
"Maybe it got shy from being looked at." Link gently voiced his earlier guess.
"Link!"
Emily softly called Link's name, her face blooming with a sweet smile.
For some reason, though the curves of the two were about the same, Link felt that Emily's smile at this moment was far more beautiful than the shy moon. For a moment, Link was entranced.
"Link, would you be willing to go with me to the Astronomy Tower to see the stars?" Emily's voice woke Link back up.
He silently looked at the equipment belt at his waist, then looked out the window again.
And just then, as if curious about Link's answer, the moon that had disappeared for a long time sneakily peeked out from behind the dark clouds, and then, like a child caught peeking, hurriedly hid back again.
Seeing this, Link laughed. "There's still time. I'll go with you."
"Mm!"
Emily excitedly jumped down from the windowsill back into the corridor, then, just like back in first year, she hooked her arm around Link's, half-dragging and half-pulling him toward the Astronomy Tower.
Link followed along with a grin.
Right now the moon had only just risen halfway. He indeed still had enough time to accompany Emily to stargaze.
But the real reason Link agreed was because Emily's change in behavior today had been so drastic, so drastic that it scared him a little, afraid Emily might do something foolish.
After all, a girl standing alone at night on an open windowsill with no safety railing, and at the very edge closest to a sheer cliff, anyone would naturally associate it with those kinds of… situations.
Besides, some things really had reached the point where they needed to be made clear. If not now, they might lead to certain regrets later.
And so, the two of them walked slowly through the castle together.
They stepped out of the corridor, passed through the entrance hall, then were lifted by a helpful staircase across a stone bridge between towers…
Along the way, neither of them spoke, but both had smiles on their faces.
This image of a boy and girl walking side-by-side, leaning into each other, was especially beautiful. Even Peeves the poltergeist, who was usually the noisiest, instinctively covered his own mouth, afraid that making a sound would ruin this moment.
Hogwarts' Astronomy Tower was located at the top level of the tallest tower opposite the Owlery.
It was the place closest to the sky in all of Hogwarts, and also the usual location for Astronomy class.
Because the classes could only be held at night, Professor Sinistra usually only held one session per week for each year. And the class activity was basically a group of students taking turns staring hard through those few magical telescopes into the sky, while Professor Sinistra chattered nonstop beside them.
Honestly, it was pretty boring, but the Astronomy Tower itself was extremely popular.
There were often upper-year couples who came here for late-night strolls, and once they arrived, they never wanted to leave.
The reason was simple. Going on a date under the starry sky was especially romantic.
All of this had been said by Cedric. Link himself had always scoffed at it.
But when he truly brought Emily into the Astronomy Tower, he realized just how wrong he'd been.
Through the magical ceiling and walls of the tower, crafted with the same technique used in the Great Hall's ceiling, Link could clearly see the magnificent night sky directly above.
Countless stars twinkled brightly, like tiny silver beads, scattered in a beautiful pattern across the deep black night curtain. Eventually, they even formed a spectacular galaxy, like a faintly glowing giant dragon stretching across the entire star-strewn sky.
Link couldn't help but take a deep breath, the experience of viewing the starry sea up close exceeded all his expectations.
Now he finally understood the older students.
To be in such an environment, even doing nothing, was already an incredible experience.
Suddenly, Link felt Emily's grip on his hand tighten slightly.
He instinctively turned his head and saw the girl beside him also gazing up at the starry sky.
Her eyelashes trembled gently, and in those bright eyes reflected the dazzling starlight, so brilliant, it could rival the Morning Star itself.
"So beautiful." Under the starry sky, the girl said in a daze.
