Chapter 100: Prying Eyes
[Happy 100th Chapter]
-----
The first thing Christian checked was the group's test cards. Although they had started getting along, he still would not trust them with their cards until after the test. After all, he had too much lying on this trial. Once he ensured they were in their places and nothing happened to them, he checked everything else.
'A few vitaseeds are missing,' Christian thought. At first, he thought they had fed him, but the quantity missing would suggest they fed him more than a dozen. Should I bring it up?' Someone might have wanted to keep some at hand in case of an emergency, and he was incapacitated, and they forgot to mention it to him.
'Forget it,' Christian decided. It would be bad if they interpreted his asking as suspicion, thus ruining the excellent team cohesion they've established in such a short period. Besides the vitaseeds, the food storage and everything else were intact, so Christian left the bag.
He looked in the distance, thinking about how he could pass the time. 'I could do a translation. I haven't done one of those in a while.' Christian used to translate things from one language to another, but stopped ever since becoming a wizard.
'Maybe some magic?' he contemplated. 'I still need to find the mental image for all my spells.' To increase his magical theory, Christian dissected all the spells he knew, from their incantation to their wand movement and even their intents. The next step in this process is to create mental images for all these spells and train to use them silently. However, this is a task that will take months.
'I could start now,' Christian thought. However, such a task requires excellent focus, and he did not want to be distracted in the middle of the night, especially in this dangerous place. 'Maybe a movie, preferably one I have already seen, so I don't become too enthralled.' He closed his eyes and accessed Jim's memories, choosing the movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
…
Even before the third trial started, The Curator — Vincent — had his eyes on Christian. Vincent watched as Christian forced his team into a contract and forcefully took their identity cards.
"Wise decision," Vincent praised. He made the rules mainly to test and see how Christian would react.
"Look at the contract he created," Mimir added.
"Very basic and can't even be considered a magical contract," Vincent commented before frowning. "How does such a young child know such deep, dark magic?"
"That's what I'm thinking."
"I checked his soul, and there were no signs of overusing dark magic," Vincent said. "On the contrary, it oozed with virtues."
"So, the only other possibility is someone taught him just to learn, or the child accidentally found a comprehensive book on the dark arts," Mimir summarized. "You read his memory. Did you notice something?"
"I didn't pry too much," Vincent revealed.
"We should warn him," the cat suggested, and Vincent nodded. "By the way, what was his innate restriction?" In the magical world, being born too talented is not necessarily a good thing, as these children are often born with an innate limitation. The Planeswalker Seeds are the best proof of this concept. They are all exceptionally talented, but all have some kind of flaw.
"Navigation," Vincent responded.
"That may not be so bad," Mimir said. Innate restrictions can be as simple as only being able to sleep while facing one of the cardinal directions, to severe narcolepsy, and the inability to use any potions.
"Did it affect his ability to use Spatial Magic?" the white cat asked. Innate restrictions can also affect someone's other abilities. For example, the ones cursed with narcolepsy can develop the inability to use Dream Magic.
"No, he just can't read or remember maps correctly or navigate properly," Vincent explained. "It's milder now that he has built a Mind Palace."
"That's good to hear."
The two continued watching the test, and the room remained silent until the group started eating, at which point Christian turned his water into soda.
"Already starting with Food Magic? Not bad," Vincent praised again. Food Magic is a very advanced form of Transfiguration, so for a twelve-year-old to be already dabbling in the subject was remarkable. The two peepers continued observing the trial through the crystal orb.
"Did this kid just directly enchant a living creature? With no preparations, no precautions, and no ceremony? Does he want to die?" Mimir said in shock. Vincent squinted his eyes.
"This is bad," Mimir added, not hiding her worry. "He's functioning on pure adrenaline."
"Don't worry, he'll be fine," Vincent reassured. "Don't forget how powerful his soul is."
"That only means he can withstand the backlash without his mind instantly collapsing. What is he going to do for the rest of the test?"
"Let's find out," Vincent replied calmly, and Mimir suddenly paused after hearing his tone. Yes, this type of test is the best way to determine what level of a Planeswalker Seed this boy is. So, she calmed down and watched curiously. They watched how the group escaped the Earth Queen, and Christian immediately passed out afterward. Once he woke, they saw him close his eyes to assess the situation.
Vincent put his hand on the crystal ball, and it changed into what was happening inside Christian's mind. If the young Planewalker were here, he would be shocked as this level of magic is probably not something even his headmaster or favorite DADA teacher could use.
"Does he have the talent of a [Psionic Healer]?" Mimir said in shock as she watched how Christian rapidly healed the terrible damage to his psyche.
"Truly a wonderful approach," Vincent smiled.
Mimir sighed: "First was his potential to become a [High Enchanter], and now, he's even shown talent in Mind Magic. I think his talent has reached the extreme of the seeds."
Vincent was about to say something when he sensed something. He waved his hand, and two projections manifested in the room, showing an African and Eastern Asian wizard dressed in magical robes.
"Liu Xing, shouldn't you be studying the enchantments in the Great Wall? Why are you contacting me?" Vincent asked. He was unsurprised that Kerma had called him since they were closer, but Liu Xing's contact surprised him.
"I have some free time, so I thought I would check on the exam," Liu Xing replied casually. "Anything interesting?"
"Yes, the seed of Reality 7 is here."
"Did he fail in the first trial?" Kerma asked casually
"No, he's taken the third test," Vincent replied. "He's actually quite talented."
"I knew your heart wasn't on Project Eighth despite how you voted," Kerma said, shaking his head. They were friends, so he knew what kind of person Vincent was. However, they have already decided to give up on Reality 7, and one seed won't affect the decision.
"See for yourself," Vincent said. He touched the crystal ball before waving his hand at these two. Across the world, these two powerful wizards raised their hands and received blue light, which they placed on their foreheads. Then, they saw everything Christian had experienced since coming to this place.
"He's indeed talented," Kerma acknowledged, and Liu Xing nodded. "What's his innate restriction?"
"Navigation."
"That could be tricky."
"Do you also have doubts now?" Liu Xing asked with a frown.
"No, but you should understand the dangers of Project Eighth," Kerma responded. "It would be best if this kid could miraculously survive the seven shifts."
"You've given him too much credit," Liu Xing said. Talents were not everything for a Planeswalker Seed since they were all geniuses. The crux of the trial was to nurture that talent and turn it into power at an accelerated rate.
"That's why I said miraculously," Kerma added.
"Forget him for now," Liu Xing said, wanting to change the subject. "I heard rumors that Balam is returning to Reality 5."
"Doesn't he still have more than 300 years in his post?" Vincent asked.
"My sources said he pulled some strings from the High Arcane Council, allowing him to return early."
"That's unlikely, right?" Kerma asked. All seven of them who were stationed were members of the Arcane Council, but none of them were worthy to sit or influence the High Arcane Council.
"I don't know, but I trust my source," Liu Xing stated, making the other sigh. "What should we do?"
"What can we do? Just finish our terms and leave," Kerma said.
"Are you guys just going to accept this?"
"I agree with Kerma," Vincent said. "This world's [Mystery] is thinning, making it hard to live here for long, but I'd rather do that than get involved in the dirty politics of the council."
Liu Xing sighed, not hiding his disappointment. He forgot the people here were powerful wizards who either offended someone, outliers who refused to play politics with the council, or chose to come here like Vincent. That's why they were exiled to these terrible and cumbersome positions.
He refused to spend hundreds of years in this low-level plane and thought it might be a good idea to rally them and make a splash so they could all return home. Sadly, it seems none of them wanted to act.
