Harry Potter: The Dark ages

Chapter 22: Chapter 22 A Flick and a Swish

"Now we can take out our wands." Professor Flitwick said in a shrill voice, standing on a stool. "We've spent half a month familiarizing ourselves with the basic theory of spell casting. The proper wand movement and correct pronunciation of spells are things we must commit to memory."

"No matter whether you use more advanced silent magic or wandless magic later," he stood on tiptoes, trying to see every student, "wand movements and spell pronunciations will always be very important fundamentals."

"Now, take out your wands and divide into two groups," Professor Flitwick shouted. The Gryffindor students below were already in an uproar. The young Wizards were excited about finally using their wands. "Try not to team up within your own House. You should learn to interact with students from other Houses."

The excited young Wizards scrambled to form their groups. Lily paired with Gary, Howard and Black formed a group, and Al and James faced each other.

"I've already prepared the feathers to be used," Flitwick took out his wand and gave it a clean, precise flick. The feathers piled on the table orderly dispersed in front of each group. "Now, use the Levitation Charm, which I taught you in the first lesson, to make the feather in front of you fly."

"Remember the wrist movement I taught you!" Professor Flitwick jumped down from the stool and patrolled back and forth in the classroom with his hands behind his back. "A flick and a swish, remember, a flick and a swish." He demonstrated the movement as he spoke.

"You first." Gary pulled out his vine wood wand and let Lily go first.

"Wingardium Leviosa!" Lily nodded, pointing her wand tip at the feather, and whispered.

The feather slowly floated up. Lily was a bit nervous; she kept her wand pointed at the feather, afraid of anything going wrong.

Finally, the feather stopped about two feet above Lily's head and remained still.

"Excellent, Miss Evans! Five points to Gryffindor!" Professor Flitwick applauded.

After the feather fell, Gary, wanting to earn some points for Ravenclaw, also pointed his wand at it and whispered the spell, imitating Lily's voice.

In reality, he didn't need to use the spell at all; he just had to think about making the feather fly, and the vine wood wand would cast the spell itself. But he had to pretend to be like everyone else.

He had never heard of a wand that could cast spells on its own. What if the wand's ability was exposed and the Ministry of Magic confiscated it? What would happen to his magic output without a medium?

Every time his magic surged, he just had to touch the wand with his hand, and the dragon's nerves coiled within the wand would continuously drain the magic from his body.

The wand was like an endlessly unfillable pool. Gary was very curious how much magic this wand could actually hold.

After he silently thought, "Make this feather float," the feather floated up again, just like before.

"Very good, Mr. Shafiq," Flitwick was pleased that his House's student was also progressing quickly, "Five points to Ravenclaw."

"Hey, I'm really sorry for what I said to you earlier." Seeing Professor Flitwick go to watch Black and their demonstration, Lily quietly said to Gary.

"Huh?" Gary didn't react; he was still thinking about Professor Flitwick's "flick and a swish." Although his wand could cast spells on its own, he also had to be able to perform them himself.

"Wingardium Leviosa." This time he did it himself. The wand didn't resist at all, and the magic flowed smoothly from his body into the wand. The feather floated up little by little. Although it wasn't as stable as when the wand cast the spell itself, it was still good.

"I mean…" Lily was a little anxious, her red hair waving more intensely. "I called you an accomplice for doing nothing. I'm really sorry for saying something like that. I was a bit too hasty then."

"It's fine," Gary smiled. Anyway, he had no connection with Black now, and no grudge against Snape. Since Lily came to apologize, he gladly accepted it. "I understand."

"That's wonderful then." Lily said sincerely.

"Miss Evans…"

"Call me Lily," she said. "You're not like Potter and his arrogant fools. Can I call you Gary?"

"Of course." Gary smiled.

Having made a new friend, Gary was in an exceptionally good mood this week.

As the wand absorbed more and more magic, Gary no longer needed magic stabilizers. The wand acted as a regulator, automatically absorbing magic when Gary's magic overflowed, and even feeding it back to him when his magic was depleted.

He wrote a letter to his mother, only saying that his "illness" was completely cured, and enclosed a certificate from Madam Pomfrey, the Healer at the Hospital Wing, along with seven vials of magic stabilizer.

He sold all the remaining magic stabilizers to Madam Pomfrey. There were many young Wizards at Hogwarts, and during periods of rapid magic growth, magic surges were quite possible. Madam Pomfrey applied for a batch of funds from Headmaster Dumbledore to purchase the ten vials of magic stabilizer Gary had.

Then he wrote to Mr. Paul Costa and Mr. Alan Prince, the Healers at St. Mungo's Hospital who were responsible for his condition, explaining the situation. These two gentlemen had helped him a lot in his childhood, and Gary still remembered their kindness.

His mother's reply this time was very quick, with messy handwriting, indicating great excitement.

She wrote that Gary's father, George Shafiq, had also learned the good news and decided to return to London. With this money, he wouldn't have to earn the twenty Galleons for overseas living expenses anymore.

Gary felt as if he had used Felix Felicis; good things were happening one after another.

Aside from the big argument with Black, Gary's first month at Hogwarts could be described as perfect. He made many new friends, the relationships within his House were harmonious, and his academic performance had made significant progress.

Every morning, he diligently attended classes, returned to his dormitory for a nap at noon to recharge, and could freely wander in the Library at night.

Howard, Alfrina, Gary, and Kona initially formed a small group. Although Kona and Gary didn't see eye to eye, they couldn't resist Al and Howard's persistent persuasion.

The four excelled in different areas. Alfrina had exceptional talent in Potions and Herbology; Slughorn always gave Al extra points in every class. Kona excelled in Astronomy and Flying Class; her Quidditch skills weren't as outstanding as James's but were still excellent. Gary excelled in Charms and Transfiguration; these two subjects required high precision in magic output, and he always managed to steal the show with his vine wood wand. Howard excelled at eating.
